General Discussion / Re: The Exile Challenge
« on: July 30, 2023, 07:07:58 AM »
This challenge seems harder now that arrows require yarn, there is no way to get yarn in Winter if you aren't going to villages...

I think that leaves you with javelins for active hunting as the best chance to get on top of the starvation.  I am not even sure if it's worth it trying to use lever traps, since the main benefit there was the leather cord for archery.

Update:  Well, after your first big game kill you need the leather cord to make larger clothes, but you can get a few birds pretty quickly

It's been a year so I tried this again.

Random starting location (press new world and then start immediately), HHA, winter, drop everything.
Slightly easier than original rules:
- Chose culture & rerolled a little bit.
- Allowed myself to zoom out only after reaching a mountain peak
- Not allowed to use villages

On my 2nd attempt, just killed a reindeer with a bow cornering it against a trap fence :)  Very hard, on the edge of starvation and freezing until this.  Did not really seek out cloudberries this time, all trapping and active hunting. *Edit*: My survival was still tenuous after this kill, but soon I took down a boar and 2 elk.  That's enough fur for some warm clothes which makes life much easier.  I was able to trap a bear, with 100 cuts drying, so I think that's a win.

Not being able to zoom out really changes the game a lot and is the main challenge.  I am not sure about the realism factor in searching for a mountain, it seems like you could just look up and see one.

I'm convinced that the only way to win this challenge is with an abundance of luck & time... Too many avenues for subsistence are closed due to the lack of cord.  If I missed some obvious solution, please nudge me back to it

Okay, I've got some advice for my past self to get over the first couple weeks:

- Start by finding cloudberries & water.  This is essentially impossible without cloudberries, I think, which means if you randomize your way into the wrong region you're doomed from the start.  I tried living off cranberries ...
- You can allow yourself to starve a bit to give yourself time to do other important things (firewood, setting traps)
- Learn how cords work now and don't use more than you need!  Cut off a length, otherwise, you'll waste the remainder
- Only a few (about 4, 1.0lb) bird leathers are needed to make a 15 ft length of cord
- Primitive bow & arrows are feasible with a single length of cord

Once I got bow & arrows, I finally took down an elk, but several choices made it easier:
- Chose culture (Reemi) & allowed some reroll.  I think this is justifiable, the random start could eventually get you what you want anyway, just takes the endless death out of the loop
- Used overland map, definitely a large benefit for active hunting.  Maybe someday I'll try it without the map.

And I limited myself further with: No help from villages (If you make it to a village in the normal "challenge" you've pretty much won anyway).  Makes for a nice story too: you got beat up, stripped naked and exiled

You still need luck heavily on your side, especially with the weather.  Since you are living so close to starvation, a cold spell at the wrong moment can mean doom

I tried this challenge twice, and I think I'm giving up.

First try I had severe arm injuries, but I managed to pull through.  Caught some birds and even actively hunted one down, but eventually I ran out of berries to pick within freezing distance of my traps and I was forced to make a second camp.  Despite nearly a dozen traps my luck ran out and I died simultaneously starving, freezing and being ready to drop.

My second try I realized the only way to make it past treading water in this way was to actually take down a game animal.  I tread water for a bit until I was relatively satiated, then I ran around until I found an elk.  I guess my character's speed was too low to really catch up with the elk.  I managed to get close enough for a few plausible javelin throws but they all missed, and being hopelessly lost from my camp and freezing I let the cold take me.

I'm convinced that the only way to win this challenge is with an abundance of luck & time... Too many avenues for subsistence are closed due to the lack of cord.  If I missed some obvious solution, please nudge me back to it

I'm going to try my own variant:  The same hurt & naked start in winter.  You can zoom out, but you're required to be hostile to all people - so no settlement help.  I think the zooming out is enough of a benefit to actually have a chance at active hunting

I saw one once near one of the northern tribes.  I missed.

Buying all the jewelry you can get hold of and hoard it is a fairly good money sink that's available currently.

What's the point of this, besides the better weight/value ratio?

I have a pile of furs stacked floor to ceiling, all of my gear is masterwork and I'm currently trying to grind Carpentry so I can make fine/superior arrows myself.

I know most of you probably just start a new character at this point, but I want to play mine out.  Eventually I'm going to die trying to wipe out the Njerpez culture, but in the meantime it might be nice if I had something to spend my fortune on.

Some money sink ideas I have:
  • Teacher NPCs that will give you a skill bonus (like current quest rewards) in exchange for goods
  • Pay Sages or Craftsmen tons for minor permanent improvements to equipment
  • Set up buy orders with a village for specific types of goods.  In other words, pay them extra to focus on gathering a specific commodity, like dried meat or something, so that they'll have more available to trade in the future

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: Performance issues when issuing commands

Ok, I don't think this is related to URW anymore.  I tried recording these lag spikes using OBS and OBS actually freezes at the same time, so the recorded video just looks jumpy instead of lagged (using mouse over hover in the main menu)

This might be due to Chrome, or some plugin thereof, slowing down my system.  I noticed it sped up quite a bit once I had closed my usual collection of 10 tabs, however the impact on URW is outsized.  The rest of my system behaves normally.

Windows 10, 3.40

I picked up the game again after some time of inactivity, and I noticed that I'm experiencing a lot of lag, maybe 200ms - 500ms between issuing a command (for example, rotate the character or move) and when it actually gets executed.  I also see the lag when doing things like moving the cursor in my inventory.  During long running commands like crafting, the game seems fine.

I tried moving away from my home tile, and I experience the lag there, too.  I also tried reinstalling and playing a new character.

In Resource Monitor, I don't see much CPU activity but occasionally I do see a lot of disk activity for URW files.

Any ideas I can try to remedy this?

Turns out my entire computer was on the brink of exploding.  Eventually I had to reinstall windows.  URW is fine!

Gameplay questions / Re: Armor - Maximum Protection
« on: June 04, 2017, 10:25:39 PM »
Durability loss definitely worsens protection; what I was getting at is I can see it being possible (not saying I have measured this) that certain items take more damage than others, and if that's true then I'd guess it applies to weaker materials.  For sure though, if you need 20 pieces of armor to equal the same protection as 5 or 6, it's going to be more difficult to replace it after a battle if you can't simply repair them.

60 weight is a lot, I guess, but for strong characters it's not very much.

I took down a Njerp village hunting for woollen socks last night, the protection did pretty good.  I guess the only critique I have is that maybe the durability loss is worse with this set than with metal armor?  I really don't know.  It's a shame that you can't make or repair linen/nettle/woollen stuff.

This was next to a cliff tile to the north

I'm guessing the elevation lines cut through building placement

Edit:  In fact, now that I've zoomed out, the "settlement" tile is gone and it just says "there is a kota at this location"

Suggestions / Re: using "reputation" as currency
« on: June 01, 2017, 04:38:38 AM »
I agree that not having actual currency is a good thing, however I also agree that trying to come up with a balanced trade is often an unnecessary chore.  It could use QoL improvements.  "What of what I have do you want" usually ends up in them asking for your masterwork weapon.  Maybe a feature to ask, "How many of this stack of widgets would you want," or "Among these four different items what would you want"
