Suggestions / Re: Spells for knives
« on: November 09, 2018, 03:56:42 AM »
I was surprised that the npc asked for only a fine broad knife even though my inventory at the time also had a masterwork set of the small and regular knives. So perhaps the quest randomizes which above-normal quality knife gets targeted.

I got curious about the presence of runestones in Finland. There's a page set up by a woman named Zorm speculating about the origin of a pair of standing stones at the Raisio Church plus a mention about controversial runes found in Vöyrin.

Now, one example of prehistoric rock art is the Huittinen moose head made from soapstone. New tools could include chisels and files (substituted with sandstone or rough wood for stone lapping). I also looked up a bit about rock painting. Red ochre (punamulta) from hematite seems to be the pigment, which I guess could be acquired with the mod that lets you dig bog iron. The hematite should be crushed and then mixed in egg or animal fat for binding material. Red has also been used in wooden house finishing (keittomaali) with flour and flax oil as the binder. That might be handy when deteriorating buildings become implemented!

Stonelobber's Primitive World mod has a few simple recipes for clay pottery, and I guess you could extend it with small handicrafts. However, its requirement to stand in water ends up limiting raw material collection because you can't stay in cold water for too long.

Gameplay questions / Re: Can my animals drown? and weapon handling

Animals don't drown when you have them leashed, but it's possible for them to fall into ice and drown if you let them wander. I remember reading someone's post about losing a dog that way at their homestead.

Dogs are easy to take care of, as you can leash them and tie them to trees. I don't think you can do that with companions, though...
What about building a fence enclosure? But the companion AI probably would climb over it.

Modding / Wool felt as kota walls?
« on: July 21, 2018, 03:34:54 AM »
Since there are mods that do stuff with sheepshearing, wool, and weaving, I was wondering if anyone has thought about felting wool to make into kota coverings. In concept, the process might be an imitation of fur hide preparation (with adjustments to the steps' flavor text). "Fur" would have to be the item archetype of the felt covering in order to keep heat inside a kota. But does the game's architecture allow the player to mod a fur hide into existence?

Gameplay questions / Re: Kotas

You can build a kota as big as you want if you build a lot of frames and have enough fur/hides for walls/flooring.

In my diagram, I put a box around the tiles representing the dimensions of a one-square interior kota and x is the tile you build the frame on. I colored the floor sections in grey and walls in orange. You'll need to build your frames apart by 1 or 2 tiles depending on the dimensions you want and all you need to do is build walls at the outside edges of the frames. I remember seeing somebody's picture of their livestock kota fence on one of the pages on the old forum's What's Going On In Your Unreal World? thread. It's a really good idea because predators can't break kota walls.
Edit: This is the post I was thinking: http://z3.invisionfree.com/UrW_forum/index.php?showtopic=3765&view=findpost&p=22035299

The most likely place where I found out about URW would've been on the Haven & Hearth forums. My village group disbanded after a world reset so I was looking around for a roguelike I could get comfortable with. I've been playing since version 3.17
