A makeshift stone axe can be made out of a slender tree trunk, a stone and a piece of tying equipment. It is very low quality and drastically increases the time needed for a task.

Usage

The stone axe is used as a weaker, inexpensive alternative for axes bought from shops, if there are none available or the player is far away from any villages.

A stone axe cannot be used to make boards.

Availability

The only axe type in the game that can be crafted by the player character.

URW Game Encyclopedia description

The official URW in-game encyclopedia (accessed by the F1 key) describes the stone axe thusly:

A crude but effective weapon which can be used to cut down trees - although any timberwork with a stone-axe requires patience.

Real life context

Stone axes are some of the oldest human tools, possibly even older than the oldest stone knives. They developed from rudimentary "hand-axes" without handles, with wooden handles becoming increasingly common and standard in the later Paleolithic and the Heolithic. These hafted stone axes became the ancestors of all later metal axes, including the copper, bronze and iron axes seen in later prehistory and antiquity.
