UnReal World uses a barter system of trading, meaning there is no currency. You may trade with anyone you find, but you'll find more and often better items in villages. Notice that some cultures are wealthier than others and this will be reflected in the goods available for trade.

Trading advice
There are many good strategies for trading in UnReal World, here is one of them: Once they agree to a trade just add a little extra to the item(s) you want to purchase, a couple dried fish or smoked elk cuts would work. If they accept the trade after you add those extra items just add a little extra again. Do this until they decline the trade, then take out the last little extra item you put in and accept the trade. This strategy is useful for getting a little extra out of your trades. It is recommended you don't add roasted or perishable food to your trades, try to add non-perishable like bread, smoked meat, and dried meat.
Trading with people
Trading with people is simple:
Select "chat” [C] Select who you wish to talk to Select the "Trade Items” option.
From here, you can barter for items you have picked up from the village. If nothing has been picked up, the NPC may offer you an opportunity to barter for items on their person - select “let’s see what I can trade from you” to browse these items.
If you want to buy an animal, select the "Buy Animal" option. Note that every villager except the children can sell you any animals they have, however not all villages have animals.
If the NPC finds your offer acceptable, the trade window will turn green and you will have the opportunity to finalize the transaction or start again. If the offered items are inadequate, the NPC will give feedback reflecting how close you are to a satisfactory trade. Items with less than roughly 1% the value of the intended purchase will be refused if offered – get around this by offering such items in bulk.
Message | % of Value |
---|---|
Very marginal | 0-10% |
Only the start | 10-20% |
Good start | 20-30% |
Needs to be tripled | 30-40% |
Needs to be doubled | 40-50% |
Halfway there | 50-60% |
Two thirds | 60-70% |
Getting promising | 70-80% |
Pleasantly close | 80-90% |
Few more items | 90-100% |
Shops no more
Shops have been removed from the game (since 3.18). Instead, the same goods as before are now found in storage buildings around the village. These items are communal village property and can be purchased from any adult villager. After the first item is picked up, players will have a short time to collect additional items they wish to barter for before their reputation with the village becomes strained by the delayed payment. Note that reputation will affect the price the villagers offer you. Items to be traded for will be marked as “unpaid” or "taken" in the player’s inventory and should be dropped prior to leaving the village if the player reconsiders the purchase.
Trade goods
Common items for a player to sell have changed significantly over various updates. The following comparison was made in v3.18b4, normalized against the purchase of a woodsman’s axe. Again, no true currency exists; such a mid-range value item is a reasonable compromise for this comparison, since cheap items will introduce greater rounding error and highly expensive items require excessive time and setup to test.
This comparison is by no means complete. Other strategies (homicide, for example) will yield different items for trade, however this should be adequate for inexperienced players.
(info below may be outdated, v3.18b4 - from old Wikia)
Item | # to buy woodsman’s axe | Notes |
---|---|---|
Boards | 20 | Batch production, very heavy |
"Käpälälauta"-fox trap | 20 | Made from boards, much lighter |
Wooden bowl | 20 | Made from blocks, time intensive |
Arrow | 40 | Usually bought; reasonably light 'currency' |
Staff | 80 | Made from slender trunks, batch production |
Club | 80 | Made from slender trunks |
Raw elk cuts | 160 | Dependent on kills. 1 elk ~ 200-250 cuts |
Arrows are good currency for the value/weight ratio. After some tests in current version, trade goes something like this:
Base value item 1 arrow = 1a
Assuming all items are in decent condition (normal condition)
1 primitive bow = 2a 1 shortbow = 5a 4 staves = 1a (8lbs ea staff) 4 javelins = 1a (6lbs ea) 1 board = 1a (20lbs ea) 1 pawboard trap = 1a (3lbs ea)
For roleplaying reasons, this could be called early game professions :) The wanderer could help the village working as carpenter, Fletcher or crafter.
Quality
Item quality impacts its value thus, for both buying and selling:
Quality | Value Modifier |
---|---|
Poor, crude, curved, leaky, awful, ragged | 0x |
rough, bland, harsh, inferior | 0.5x |
decent | 1x |
fine, tasty | 1.25x |
masterwork, superior, beautiful, delicious, perfect | 1.5x |
Trade goods: the rule of thumb
As of v3.18, selfmade clothes are reduced in value immensely, which mean we can no longer use selfmade clothes to trade away.
Certain goods, if traded too much into a town, they will stop buying more of that object other goods (usually planks). Saying "We have enough of *item name*.". This can be worked around by trading to different villages.
URW Game Encyclopedia description
The official URW in-game encyclopedia (accessed by the F1 key) describes trading thusly:
Therefore, best use of furs from hunts is for cords to make shortbows, as the simple-to-make trade goods. Otherwise use the furs/leathers to trade, if you really must.
As spare change, bring along either dried/smoked/salted foods, and/or arrows. They are lightweight and can be of use.
You can trade goods from the villages or barter with individual people for their personal belongings.
Goods in the villages are owned by the whole community and you can start trading for them with any adult village member. It doesn't matter in which building the goods are stocked, they are all available for trading. In short, obtaining village goods by trading goes as follows:
Pick up the items you want from buildings and in around village and start trading for the collected items when you are ready by talking to an adult villager. Collecting items you want to trade for can be done by picking them up, starting to move them, or packing them on your pack animal. You can collect several items from several different buildings and start trading only when you've got everything you want. When trading is started you then need to offer enough goods from your own inventory to pay for the items you've collected.
Villagers can also start self-imposed bargaining if you have held the unpaid items in your possesion for too long. It's wise not to hesisate when you've been asked to pay.
It's easy to change your mind if you don't want to trade for something you happened to pick up. Dropping unpaid items back to their place, or close by, removes them from your debt list. There's also "I can't pay" trading chat option which can be used if you've picked an excess amount of debt and find it impossible pay what they want. If that option is chosen villagers will reclaim their goods from your possession.
To barter with individual people to obtain items from their personal inventory you should talk to them and choose trade option. If they have something to trade you can then select the items you desire and the bartering starts. One-to-one trading with villagers is not possible if you are carrying unpaid community owned goods. In that case they will ask you to pay for the goods you taken first.
Your trading manners affect to your reputation with village.
