Weatherlore is a skill that allows the character to read weather of the next few hours as well as weather for the coming day.

Skill in reading weather can be improved by putting the skill to use by pressing s and then w, or Alt+W. High level of skill in weatherlore will make predictions more accurate.

Weather forms

Weather variation in Unreal World largely consists of various phenomenon: Time of year, time of day, moon phase, cloud cover, precipitation and existence of hot or cold waves.

Temperature

The time of year, as observed by calendar of the peoples, plays greatest part in determining temperature on any day, but occasional hot and cold waves variation is possible.

Temperature will usually fluctuate only slightly over the course of a full day, but waves of cold and bouts of rain lasting for days can occur.

Weatherlore helps preparing for when quicksilver is reaching bottom and conditions become truly cold even for well-prepared and settled peoples, or if drying of food out of winter season can be done the next day.

Daylight and cloud movements

Time of day is the biggest factor for visibility, but a stable one, depending on current season, and together with moon phases and starlight contributes for all light received except for man-made firelight.

Presence of clouds obscures all forms of skylight, which is usually not major hinderance during the day, but can create perfectly dark conditions where characters cannot see at all or can only see other moving characters and animals and not the terrain or forest around them.

Together with observation of moon phases (which requires no particular skill), weatherlore can help determine priority of tasks for the coming day. Stumbling into an angry bear or Njerpez warrior in pitch dark conditions can be dangerous.

Uses

While not the most relevant survival skill in comparison to knowhow related to gathering food, being able to predict weather can have numerous advantages especially when travelling light during winter season and in the northern regions.

Incoming rain or snow

  • Fishing during rain may result in greater success, and rainfall is required for certain quests and other events
  • Visibility will be greatly reduced in low light conditions when weather is cloudy or when it's raining or snowing
  • Hunting and tracking can be more difficult due to reduced overall visibility and obscured tracks
  • It's not possible to sleep under the open sky in rain or snowfall unless the character is Ready to drop, so staying rested for travel in rainy conditions is useful

Incoming cold wave

  • Drying raw fish or meat will be possible even outside of winter season, which can be especially advantageous before actual winter arrives
  • Long distance or duration outdoor activities, especially those which cannot be paused such as fishing, can be detrimental
  • Being immersed in water even partially should be avoided at all costs
    • Crossing ice when it's not yet winter season is especially dangerous
    • Crossing fords by wading should be avoided
