Climbing is pretty useless. There is no reason at all why you should ever climb anything in the game. If you climb a tree, you will either fall out and break your neck, or you will succeed, but while you were climbing the animal you were looking for moved 3 wilderness map tiles away.

Sometimes, you will be prompted to climb some terrain in the zoomed in map because the gruond is too steep. If you are chasing an animal, it will get away, so just go around the steep terrain. There is always a way around, and then you won't lose your prey.

If you want to train your climbing skill safely because you like to have all your skills increased, climb fences.
