It would be iron-age appropriate if we could carve log gutters for rain catchers on our cabins.

There is options for this in the BAC mod.

Its one of favorites actually. Crunching the number of the size of a roof for even a few inches of rain is barrels of water.

As to whether it was period to real life iron age Finland... no proof. I certainly suspect it as its a very handy thing. However they might not have bothered with gutters as they do get clogged.

They certainly could have water sources other than rivers or digging into the wells in rocky Finland. (I assume its rocky by the glacial scarring).

Finland is pretty rocky. Base rock is close to surface and bare at many hills and cliffs.
Finland has approx 7% arable land. Roughly of the land 33% is/was swamps, bogs, marshes. Rest is those 300k+ lakes (188k are larger than 500m2) and whatever isn’t boulder fields aka devil’s fields, would be various forests. (Towns don‘t count :P )

Domestic animals don’t drink or eat* at the moment, but if that ever goes live in the game, we’ll need water catchment.
Cows drink a lot. Especially dairy cows.

*dogs are only domestic animals that eat
