Animal size seems to sometimes alter which trap is effective against it.  I've caught small foxes in a light lever trap, big wolves in a bear trap.  I can't recall off the top of my head how I've seen cub/young status alter effective trap size, so I'm not sure if the trap size is based on weight or animal classification + size modifier (small, normal, big.)

Turnips as stated work well for elk.  For herbivores some will also eat other plants, but I think it has to be the part that spoils over time (can't use herbs I don't think.)  I've caught elk with milkweed and lakereed root, and hares with milkweed root.  I've seen elk munching on marsh calla before, but I haven't used it in a trap before. Some birds prefer different berries than others, some may not like berries at all, obviously raptors and scavengers but even some of the others.

General Discussion / Re: How to survive (maybe) wolves
« on: January 22, 2019, 08:59:08 PM »
Yeah wolves really are too dangerous to mess around with, at least if you value your characters life.  One problem is that you never know exactly how many wolves there are, where they're hiding or if they've left you alone.  I tend to engage them only by leaving traps and waiting until it dies to butcher.

Suggestions / Re: But that villager died

Been 3+ years here, and still no one wants to go hunting with me "until we see Tauno who went with you".   I brought Tauno's lifeless body to the village back when he met his end, so everyone definitely saw him...  Perhaps it's Driik sarcasm in action.

Driik do have a strange sense of humor

Gameplay questions / Re: Ritual "Rod fisherman's sacrifice"

What he said.  It seems like most stuff in URW either burns or sinks.  Fish burn (but don't sink) so if you throw it in the water and it disappeared, the ritual seems to be successful.

It seems like food/hides/perishables/only degrade at the turning over of a day (right around morning/latemorning.)  I think if your hide is still in the process of tanning at that time it won't decay, but if it finishes early morning and sits and you don't get to it until late morning, I think it degrades.  Sorry if this is somewhat off topic.

Gameplay questions / Re: Defence bonus, disarming and blocking tactics
« on: October 13, 2018, 11:00:34 PM »
With counter attacks you get tired faster and more easier to get hurt. Blocking will not tire you and safer, but keep blocking and try to exhaust your opponent isn't a legit strategy as your opponent is most likely to end you up with lucky hits.

Does countering use fatigue points? I was under the impression that it doesn't. It seemed like a decent strategy to preserve fatigue points (and weapon quality) if you're well armored and skilled is to skip your attacks and only counter attack.

General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?

So I probably went a little overboard with winter fishing.  I got about 150 dried trout and 120 dried salmon.  Then I was able to catch a big bear (260 dried cuts) and two elks (350 dried cuts.)  I don't think I'll go hungry for a while.

If you have the patience you can simply wait on trapped animals to die. Kicks on birds are good, light damage. The best is to force animals into drowning in spring or early winter.

I think all damage types have the chance to damage skin, but blunt is the lowest risk followed by pierce. The more damage done the greater the chance, and I think if you aim for the head you can kill with doing less damage. Also you have to be careful with smaller animals, using a stone axe blunt attack to kill a bird will likely ruin the skin. If you're proficient in a weapon type, you're more accurate and better able to strike the head.

Gameplay questions / Re: All About Fishing
« on: October 08, 2018, 09:12:43 PM »
While I worked on a primitive fishing gorge mod for the game, I had the opportunity to ask Sami some questions.

Fishing rods and nets "can" target multiple fish of varied size.
Rocks (clubs), spears/javalins and (maybe) trident all target a single large fish.

Do you know, or have you experienced any difference between different objects of the same quality that aren't nets or fishing rods?

Gameplay questions / All About Fishing
« on: October 06, 2018, 03:11:04 PM »
I'm starting this topic in hopes people will share anything they've experienced in game with fishing, and for people to ask any questions.

On my characters I like to fish without rods or nets, and it seems like regardless of using spear or club type weapons you pretty much only catch pike unless you're in a rapids or deep sea tile.  I've caught burbot in deep sea and rapids, and salmon and burbot in rapids.  Anyone else share the same experience?

Also, the wiki says that spears are superior to clubs for fishing, I'm not sure I've experienced this to be true.  Early game I tend to just use a rock and it seems to work just as well as a javelin?  Does the type of spear or club matter?  Does attack bonus or anything play a part?  I'm assuming better quality is good.  Can using a different type of spear or club result in different fish caught?

Gameplay questions / Re: Javeline and eyesight

Some attributes will affect skills even if they aren't used in skill calculations.  For instance, you will fumble more attacks if your dexterity is low even if you are using spears with high spear skill.  Eyesight may or may not affect how well you hit with ranged attacks (devs are purposefully mysterious about this sort of thing I think) although I think it is more that javelins are more short to medium ranged weapons.  I don't think people in general are going to be precise that often throwing a stick at a moving target 16-40m away.  I try to use javelins within 5 tiles, 8 if i'm really pushing it.

Probably the Kaumo. Masterwork spear will add 10% to proficiency,  but Kaumo has better attack bonus. Those two factors alone would make it somewhat of a wash I think, but the Kaumo spear hits harder as well.

Edit: forgot masterwork has plus impact bonus, it's probably somewhat of a wash...but then again I don't know the ins and outs of the attack system like a dev

Gameplay questions / Re: Trading with Foreign Traders
« on: August 10, 2018, 06:38:16 PM »
I think everything has a set value. Longbows for whatever reason are cheaper than some other bows even though they are superior to those other bows. Things of fine quality are valued at 1.25 normal. So a fine longbow is worth 100, reindeer fur (normal) is 200 i think, and broadhead arrows maybe 8 each,  so 48 maybe?

Foreign traders often have excellent wares however, so it is wise to save furs to trade with them. Dynamic pricing/valuations between cultures would be pretty cool, but it's not implemented at the moment.

I think the current system is fine; just be a little more cautious on the ice in spring and fall.
