General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?

It’s not such a big deal! I tie him to a tree and go trading! If you put on enough headgear the barking, wincing and howling noises get muffled  :P
My character is an atheist anyway, so none of that spirit stuff worries him :D

Speaking of dogs, they should probably run away if they’re too hungry.

^^
I know how you feel. I don’t do trapping, but I have killed bears and elk. The amount of meat you get is intense, I have around 600 dried meat stored in my cellar and like 50lbs of fur. Hunting is op if you know what you’re doing! :)

600 dried meat and yet I keep my dog hungry, am I a bad person xD

I’m not going to lie I’m a noob in this game.
In my newest game, I’m playing a normal fisherman that decided to settle down (hobbit style) away from villages. During the summer, I purchased a hunting dog. Brave and fearless companion. And went on a short hunting trip, in a nearby forest west of my wooden hut. There, I encountered a bear. As a new player with javelins as hunting tools I set my dog at him, I mean in the worst situation I’ll loose my dog, hawk, which isn’t a big deal. He managed to kill the bear! I was excited, as it was the first big animal I (well, my dog) killed in game. I thought I could make cord for the winter, arrows, blanket for my bed with all the fur and eat it’s meat until next summer. Through my excitement, I forgot to google how to skin and animal, and butchered it before harvesting the skin. As a new play I though the fur was destroyed by the dog, so i didn’t care as much. With a rope given to me by a villager I smoked some of the meat, cooked a bit for my own use and sold the rest. What did I buy with 80lbs of bear meat?
Reindeer fur.
Yup.
If you’re not following how cringey and stupid my decision is, let me explain. I easily could have harvested and created bear fur from the bear corpse I butchered, but instead, I decided to not only waste all my meat that I could sell for tools and lost all my wealth.
So that’s my short story... I hope I learn from my mistakes xD

General Discussion / Re: Farming in iron age Finland

For starters though, I'm going to modify some of the FREQUENCY and COMMONNESS values into the "flora_cultivated.txt" files and see if the villages get less prosperous accordingly. I'm going to cause a famine, then farm and be the King of the Granary :D
You are too preoccupied with whether you can do it, you never stoped to think whether you should xD
That actually sounds fun. Edit all the files so all villagers die of starvation within a few months then raid the villages or something  :D
Or create a completely empty world where you’re the only person alive and do a full self-sufficiency game  :) hermit style
Or empty the world of villages apart from one, wait for the update with children and repopulate the world (Adam and eve style).

I agree. Seeing my character suffer and those 1%-ers sitting on their wooden thrones in their wooden huts is disheartening xD. I wish each villager would go hunting for their village once in a while and return with food or begin farming during spring/summer. If the village doesn’t get enough food in a month people begin starving. Villages in real life attract diseases and plagues, so I wish this was a part of the game.obviously this would be hard to implement and definetely not on the development list. At least I can hope  :)

Edit
Do villages actually farm? I’m new to the game so I don’t know. I thought they just spawned food once in a while. Hm I don’t know. If so, ignore the first part of my commend

Suggestions / Re: make dogs stop barking at birds
« on: February 15, 2018, 07:50:37 PM »
Hm I don’t know if removing it is a good idea. Just because a feature is slightly inconvenient doesn’t mean it has to be removed. I think people (not just you) expect all aspects in a video game to be very binary, either good or bad. It’s always interesting for a dog to be both beneficial (for hunting) and negative by barking or just acting annoying. I think a mix of balance makes a good game.

I hope there’s a way you can mod it out for yourself, I’ve never done modding but maybe it’s possible!

Thank you all for the tips and tricks.
When I get back on my laptop I’ll make sure to fire it up and follow your instructions. I hope I can survive the winter that I’m preparing for!

Thanks again!

Making cords requires cloth, which is probably harder than hunting for fur.

Interesting. I’ll keep javelins in mind. I didn’t realize you could make a ranged weapon without ropes! Thanks lot, and I’ll look into the self-sufficiency mod. Recently I wanted to add it to my game but I think I downloaded some old version which didn’t work.

Thanks for the advice, I’ve recently finished my timber hut and I’ve been hunting some squirrels by throwing stones at them (I know, very stone-age of me). My main source of food is fish but that never lasts, so I’m going to start hunting bigger game using the javelins you recommended. Last question, is there an easier way of finding/encountering animals? For me it takes a few days of traveling just to find a squirrel, and when I finally encountered an elk it run away faster than I could take one step to the right xD.

I’m a new player, looking for some help. I’ve found myself in a situation where I want to start smoking meat (fish mostly). In order to craft a rope (which is required to smoke meat as far as I know) you need leather. In order to get leather, you need to hunt. In order to hunt (effectively) you need a bow, and in order to get a bow you need rope (or leather I don’t remember).
Am I the only one who finds this a huge problem? In order to get leather you allready need leather. This is a huge problem for my hermit character living far from nearby towns. Is there another way to get a bow/rope?
