General Discussion / Re: Starving dogs refuse fresh Njerp? (6.1)
« on: June 24, 2020, 05:37:11 PM »
I take everything back and claim the opposite. The Njerp is eaten as intended.
Didnt know that there is a vegan dog mode :D But truely the dog of my grandma was crazy for raw potatoes ..

Vegan dog mode, haha!  ;D

Dogs will eat any human body but they must be starving to do so! You do not need to cut it up for them and you cannot command them to eat it, but remember to make sure
they're not too hungry when you take them out with you unless you only want ruined pelts :)

General Discussion / Re: Inconsistencies/problems with rope?
« on: June 24, 2020, 05:33:10 PM »
I’ve found myself in a situation where I want to start smoking meat (fish mostly). In order to craft a rope (which is required to smoke meat as far as I know) you need leather. In order to get leather, you need to hunt. In order to hunt (effectively) you need a bow, and in order to get a bow you need rope (or leather I don’t remember).
Am I the only one who finds this a huge problem? In order to get leather you already need leather. This is a huge problem for my hermit character living far from nearby towns. Is there another way to get a bow/rope?

To smoke the fishes and make a bow you can just use cord, cord can be made out of almost anything. If you choose a starting scenario that starts you off with clothing you can cut a little off to make how much cord you need to make the bow or to smoke the fishes. Many players have started hunting however with self-made javelins and using the skin of their first kill make better weaponry and trade much of the flesh (If cut from a large animal like elk/stag/reindeer) for trade items as in the start of the game you won't have the means to store/cook it all.

Remember you craft cords that are 15 ft long. You are able to cut or combine these by using the ingame menu. Smoking meat and crafting objects tell you how much you need exactly so no need to waste cord! For example if you are making a fence you only need 4 ft of cordage but you make 15 ft sections when you make cord. So you can cut the 15 ft down by 4 ft multiple times for more fencing than if you used the whole 15 ft on one fence section! Also cords require less material overall than ropes do, so if you can use cords versus rope!

For hunting you can use the above method, and many players develop playstyles on how they decide to deal with early game. I do not only use javelins at the start of game because I have a very low patience for tracking a hurt animal for hours so I'll trade anything for a dog and make a couple javelins out of slender tree trunks. When I find an animal large enough I'll throw the javelin hope it hits then send the dog after them. Some players would advise against this as you can lose a dog, however I have never lost one of my dogs doing this by following the barking. Doing this the dog does all the work and you get all the skins/meats!

Tl;dr Use cords to smoke fishes, and craft a bow. Cords can be made by cutting clothing, furs, or combining the little trees called withers. Remember to shorten the cords for however much the recipe calls for, do not worry about cutting a bunch off as you will keep both sections of cordage! :)

With the addition of embers would it be possible to find/trade for buckets to carry embers to allow easier fire making?  :) Like carrying a bucket of coals from a last fire as you trek through the winter could be life or death if you start getting hypothermia. It could be used to easier light torches, maybe save a quest giver about to die to cold out in the wilderness, or even light arrows on fire to light up the red shirts. >:D

I'm not sure if it is era-appropriate but if it is it'd be cool to have a metal coal bucket to carry around to help with survival. And I'm sure everyone here has died at least once from trying and failing to make a fire in winter.

Suggestions / Re: Domestic Reindeer Milking
« on: April 21, 2020, 02:48:40 AM »
The real life need for offspring to produce lactation is apparent. However it's my understanding that animal reproduction is on the list of features to be added someday. Until we get that feature, the milking of any of our animals is a touch unrealistic, but can be RPed around as "the baby didn't survive the winter" or that it got sent to market in the autumn or something along those lines.

I guess adding animal reproduction is the higher priority, but when that day comes it would still be neat to be able to milk the reindeer and emulate a traditional nomadic lifestyle.

I'm so excited for animal breeding as a feature and hopefully they will code genetics (basically big dog+ big dog= higher chance of big puppies) and (aggressive sow + aggressive boar = higher chance for aggressive piglets). Im sure with how wonderfully realistic this game is they will make sure that animals must have had a baby before you can milk her (also would open up having to make sure enough is left for her baby!). Or maybe even implementing some animals getting aggressive after having a baby.

This will also create so many more playstyles. Nomadic herder who breeds for their herd to be able to protect themselves but also provide good milk,  or a settler who breeds (and maybe sells to villagers!!) hunting/meat/ or war dogs. Or maybe I can destroy the Njerpz with my trained and bred war pigs! Hope its after NPC interactions since it seems that when you buy animals from a village they will sell them but always keep a male and female, so I hope they're laying the groundwork! But I love anything they flesh out  ;D

Thanks for making it simple but well explained! Some videos I've seen either go on too long for no reason, or don't explain it enough. Even as a seasoned player I didn't know what the stats like agility rolled for, and I could relate to having to keep randomizing that start location  ;D I've subscribed

Suggestions / Re: Crafting leather harnesses?
« on: February 02, 2020, 06:21:24 PM »
This would be really cool honestly. Although I'd figure they'd do carrying/hauling when they implement more hauling animal AI.

It'd be extremely helpful to be able to breed dogs/sheep/pig/horses (when implemented),etc. and strap them up with harnesses to haul stuff, maybe even be able to tie them together to carry larger amounts!

I don't know exactly how far this animal AI changes are in the grand scheme of things but I'm the most excited for when they add in animal breeding and hauling changes out of everything else (but the companion and rope changes we're so helpful in making a cabin so I see why they implemented that first!)  :D

Stories / Bloodied Snow
« on: April 11, 2019, 07:43:09 PM »
In the dead of winter an Owl Tribe man is roaming the mainland to find big deer to feed his huge pack of dogs. He is going north of the coastline to his trapline he left near trading villages. He easily finds a huge elk on his travel and shoots two arrows into the animals side, releasing the dogs they rush the dying animal. The creature quickly loses his breath and the man catches up to give him a quick jab of his northern spear. The elk dies in one hit and is cut up, then tied onto his pet bull.

Then after looking for more game he runs into a red shirted killer. With his hunting pack of dogs he takes him on by shooting his fine longbow. A broadhead arrow finds its way into the other mans thigh and he drops, the dogs shred him alive. The man called Frost Owl then loads him up on his bull as well and the trek continues. Checking and feeding his pack he takes off.

His search is again stopped by a roaming red shirt, he loads up his longbow and shoots but the arrow finds its way into a nearby spruce. The red killer rushes Frost Owl before he can reload his trusty bow. He is stuck hard in the eye by the mans knife and loses consciousness. He later awakens and releases the hounds, the dogs are in a fury and quickly bring down the man, tearing at his neck while he is on the ground. The man is loaded onto the bull.

After returning to his island cabin Frost Owl releases the animals into their respective pens, processes the elk skin, and tosses the mangled corpses of his enemies to his pack. He takes the dog called Two to a spot away from the others and names her Blood Hawk for saving his life and proving herself to the pack.

Islander and Driik legends tell of a man missing one eye who comes from a distant island in the far ocean. He arrives in a blizzard of blood and snow with his frost hounds, he tears across the land and vanquishes all signs of evil with none escaping his dogs jaws. The man rarely appears in villages trading shiny battle swords and expensive piles of furs for all of the villages animals, then disappears with them away into the ocean, his boat fades into the mist. All fear the day the comes out of his hibernation again, holding a rage as powerful and angry as the fiercest winter blizzards.

Gameplay questions / Vegan characters?
« on: November 09, 2018, 03:10:03 PM »
Hello, as a vegan in real life I love when I can do it in games. I have seen posts of players farms and I want to do that too.

Problem is I have no idea how to farm right. My characters have always hunted and had tiny farms, 3x3 maximum. My current one is new so he's still hunting as well. So any farming pros how should I make it so i can only live off plants? I'm planning on downloading the cooking mod too.

Thanks! :D

Gameplay questions / Re: Grandmaster bowman never hitting target. Why?
« on: November 08, 2018, 04:06:12 PM »
If your dogs are standing in the trajectory, there is a very high chance of hitting the dog instead of the target so try not to let them get in the way.

Even small dogs have a high chance? I figured the game would calculate how big they are to how likely I would be to hit them. Thank you so much for letting me know!

Gameplay questions / Grandmaster bowman never hitting target. Why?
« on: November 08, 2018, 03:09:18 PM »
I recently have gotten back into the game, make my character and put a bunch of points into Bows, up to 98 skill. I was fighting a njerp and made a shot, he was about 5 tiles away. I fired a fine arrow out of a fine longbow and it hit my dog. I tried again thinking it was bad luck and hit another dog.

They were leashed to me so they don't run in to die, but now I have a rotting njerp corpse and 2 critically wounded dogs. I figured since they were leashed my character would just shoot over them.

How can I help my 98 bow master to get clean shots? I want to hunt too with my new bow but not if I'm gonna cripple my dogs for weeks.

Sami said in release 3.51 you could do this :D so if you bought it on Steam you can update, but if you play for free you'll have to wait until it's released later this month.

Stories / Owls in the Land of Bears
« on: June 21, 2018, 03:10:08 AM »
Kullu was a scrawny member of the Owl tribe, by the time of his coming of age he found him self exiled from his home village by an Uncle who deemed him hated by the Water Spirits.

He was 110lbs but fast, it was a cold, and young spring day when he traded most of his clothing for a mutt, he hoped the dog would bring him food as he couldn't cast his nets, and food was scarce. Kullu was slowly freezing to death, only leaving a strange village to explore an even stranger land for a few hours at a time.

The Driik people we're nice enough to give the young boy a warm place to rest, comforted by the other villagers, he slept among them and soon was cared for like he was their kin.
However he was starving, his fur hood was the only thing that clung to his small, frostbitten frame. He kept the Dog fed though with the scraps he managed to get, but in the distance he saw a tiny figure. Kullu got closer soon realizing that it was indeed a small bear cub, he quickly hid, terror stopping him from moving and he had to remind himself to breathe.

He remembered his ancestors used to revere the Bear for their might, a huge ferocious beast that was intelligent and deadly. But also for the loving, caring side of the graceful bear, a creature that could, with one sweep of a paw kill a man, but with the same hands pick up their children to nurse. They often traded for a bear pendent to worship them, they saw her as an equal. Kullu knew that a Mother Bear was one of the most respected creatures, even the high-ranking shaman and Chief of the villages would honor the Mother as a higher ranking being than them.

So he almost wept with fear as he saw Her come through the underbrush, pushing apart the needles with Her huge body, and in almost complete silence. He could feeling his companion shiver and whimper softly, the Dog curled in on himself. The Bear stood for a while, slowly sniffing the cold spring air, then with incredible speed rushed Kullu. He felt the marrow in his bones freeze, as he raised his spear and begged for his death to be swift. However the Dog did not want to go easily, he fought a deadly dance with the Bear, Kullu inspired by the Dogs bravery rushed in to help, he wasn't going to let his friend die alone. They were somehow holding her off but suddenly Kullu felt a sharp tearing pain shoot through his leg. He turned around to see the sweet, innocent bear cub trying to protect his mother. Kullu stabbed the child, tears rolling down his face as he realized that he had become a monster.

The Dog had somehow brought the Mother Bear to a crippled state and as the dog was tearing into her, the little bear cub rammed him with his body, hopelessly trying to defend his Mother. The only comfort he has known in this cruel, cold world. Kullu and his dog slain both Mother and Child, Kullu felt as though the cold had seeped into his heart. Somehow Dog had only a cut across his leg, Kullu was lightly injured but had nothing too serious. He mysteriously couldn't find their skulls, and begged the Spirit Bear to be merciful.
Over many trips he sold most of the bodies but made some clothing to keep warm, he felt bile rise in his throat as he made a shirt from the skin of the Mother and her only child.

Summer was blessed upon Kullu and the Dog, now with the name Frost Bear. They murdered any animal they could find, but Kullu never felt any better about breaking two of the most sacred laws, one to never harm a Bear, because Bears were believed to be ancient spirits. Two, never kill a Mother with a child, it was seen as almost a crime to tear this bond apart and it was especially bad to have one of them see the other be murdered.

Kullu had a small shelter built, and had just made a cellar when he could finally afford a punt. He loaded up his two nets and paddled up the wild, early summer rapids. He prayed that the Fish would be plentiful, as he put his nets deep into the bitterly cold river. A few weeks went on as Kullu slowly started eating enough to fight hunger, he soaked branches to make cord for trading with his village-kin. They may not have been blood related but he thought the villagers were the closest thing he had to family. He was however sharing his forest home with a smart winter fox, he placed and baited traps and kept his now two Dogs tied to the same tree as his strong Bull. He figured they would protect each other, sleeping close by at all times he was often awoken by the alarm cries of his faithful companions. He never caught that Fox, and would soon fall asleep in the protective area cuddled up to the Dogs and Bull.

He woke up hungry with nothing in his pack except spoiled food for his dog-family, he started pulling up one of the nets, and catching nothing Kullu guessed he'd have to go out on a hunting trip again. Suddenly he heard a low snort, he knew it wasn't the Fox. He quickly paddled to reach his animal-kin, as the largest Bear Kullu had ever seen tore out of the forest. He was riddled with terror but the thought of losing his companions made him pull out a javelin, he aimed and missed. This scared the she-Bear, and as She was fleeing for Her life, Kullu ran over to his family and unleashed them from the tall spruce. He pulled on their leashes to try to reach the safety of his boat and the River, the Bear however wanted to make sure Kullu stayed away from Her homeland. She charged him and as She came horrifically close he could smell milk on Her. He knew then that this Mother Bear must've found the bloody remains of Her kin and wanted to protect Her child from the killers.

He unleashed both Frost Bear and Dog to run away, but they quickly turned around to defend their friend. Kullu made a sloppy thrust with his spear, completely missing the Bear, but Dog rushed in and tore at Her thorax with his jaws. He lands a savage bite, Frost Bear seeing his cue also jumps on the Bear tearing at any part he can chomp down on. The Bear swipes with Her deadly claws, knocking down both dogs. Kullu misses again and stumbles, even though he is skilled at spears. The Bear seeing his mistake goes to bat at him, but Frost Bear rushes in and rips viciously at Her neck, Dog takes his chance and goes for the same spot, managing to pierce the life-giving artery. As the she-Bear laid on the forest floor, blood gushing and tainting the ground almost black and softly huffing out Her last breath, Kullu wished he was the one dying. He felt horrified at what he'd done, with Her blood staining his weapon, he took Her skin and flesh. He has nightmares every night about the Mother he took away from a young Bear cub. One who probably starved to death, cold and alone, wondering where His beloved Mother had gone.

To this day Kullu feels the Spirits of the ancient Bears whistling through their old forests, their homeland, and prays that when he dies that he will be shown mercy. Mercy which he hasn't shown any creature, he feels as dead as the first Mother he killed, whose blood dripped on the newly fallen snow. Whose Spirit he saw climb among Her place in the stars, where She could run and play in the Bear Heaven with Her cub. Who were both taken before their time, in the frozen Spring that soon promised warm water, plentiful trout and hope.

Kullu blindly roams lost, now aged, cold, and empty, in the Owl land. All Tribes know the story by heart, and tells it to any young adventurer, begging them to listen. To respect the Ancient Spirits.

Will you?

Gameplay questions / Re: Where are animal populations the highest?
« on: June 20, 2018, 10:00:26 PM »
I've mostly made trap fences around single tile lakes, with 3 traps on each side. I also have a trap fence around my farm plots (with traps on each side).

I remember doing this in past versions, are animals still "drawn" in by water? Or have they removed that?

Thanks for helping me out :)

Gameplay questions / Where are animal populations the highest?
« on: June 20, 2018, 02:28:43 PM »
I know with dynamic populations they are not spawned by traps anymore, that they also move during summer and winter.  I'm hunting near Driik in the no man's land because people have said that outside human activity, animal population is higher.

I'm just starting up as a nomad trapper and would like the best places to find animals, I've gone to Njerp territory many times with different characters and as soon as I stepped off the punt there was a bear, an elk, and a reindeer herd.
So,

  • How far do you place the trap lines?
  • What region do you put them?
  • How far from human activity or human settlements?

Thanks everyone! :)

Adventurers are cheap, as they generally just want some food, but old men are expensive as they often require 3 quality weapons (or even more!) plus the food.

That's strange, I know choosing different options makes them want different things. Like choosing if they want to go on a longish adventure they want food, but if you choose you want a hunting partner they request weapons. I've just always chosen the option that only requires food. :P
