Today I got to see an NPC hunting! I gave him a roach because i wanted him to cook it, and then I followed him around to see what he would do. There was a bear in the area that he was tracking. His dog stayed closer to me than to him while he was trailing than bear -- it may have been better for the dog to stay closer to his adventurer but maybe the dog judged i might be the bigger threat or maybe the NPC didnt want him rushing ahead and getting killed by the bear. Once the NPC got aggressive, the dog came running to help with the fight and together they took down the bear. The NPC skinned the bear and cut it for meat. He kept 76 meat cuts in his inventory and left the rest of the meat, the skull, and the bones on the ground. Then he lit 3 fires to roast the meat. He didn't mind when I picked up the skull, took out the teeth, hung it on a nearby pine (it would be a neat touch for the NPC to hang the skull himself). I hung around for a while, his dog ate some of the meat on the ground. He also didn't mind when I took the rest of his meat cuts -- this might not be a bug, because it was more than he could carry so I guess he didn't want it.

I saw in news.txt that tanning the hide isn't implemented yet.

In all this excitement I forgot to check whether he roasted that roach i gave him at the start, but I'll go back and find him again soon but I got the punt quest at the village I took the bear meat to so it'll be a little while to I can track him down.

What kind of furs do you have on your bed?

I just tested it with an elk fur on my shelter and it said "You lay on the fur and fall asleep." If you have more than one fur it'll say "You wrap yourself up in furs and fall asleep".

news.txt says
Quote
  - added: sleeping on furs for extra warmth and comfort

The fur needs to be of decent size to act as proper ground cover or
blanket. Several smaller furs can be used instead of one big pelt.

so if you just have a squirrel fur, it won't help.

General Discussion / Re: Send a Saved game
« on: September 20, 2019, 07:43:08 AM »
Yes, feathers and branches and some more things:

Before you visit a tile, the game knows that it's a heathland tile so it will have approximately 400-500 pine trees and 40-50 young pine trees, 1-5 spruce trees, 1-15 young spruce trees, 1-5 birch trees, 0-2 fallen logs, 5-10 branches, 0-2 boulders. These numbers could be way off, they're just my guesses, but you can get the idea.

Once you visit a tile, the game stores exactly where all these things are. If while you were there, an elk walked through, then the game is also storing all the locations of the elk tracks.

Eventually this takes up a lot of space on your hard drive. [7] will trim it down, keeping only the locations where you've been recently and where you've left significant items -- a shelter, a building, some tools or clothing, some traps, a marker, villages, stuff like that.

Are the villagers relighting them or are they starting out big?

338
Since weeks are 7 days long, it's not too bad to think of smoking as "2 weeks + 2 days" or drying as "3 weeks + 4 days". if the word in the date is "before" then subtract that many weeks and add that many days. if the word in the date is "after" then add.

But there's an even easier way which is more realistic to the period, when the character wouldn't have had a very exact understanding of what day it was anyway:

The month goes:
Beginning of Month name
Early month name
Month name
Late month name
End of month name

So if I leave some meat drying by a shelter in Late Swidden I'll leave myself a note on the F6 map that says "food ready by Seedtime", or if it's End of Dirt month then I'll write "by late Dead"

339
right, it's find that they mind that i push it into the fireplace, pushing is not allowed. and throwing counts as maintaining posession of the item so they charge you for it even if after you've lit in on fire or thrown out it out of the village. that's right too.

but they should separately mind that i have lit their lumber on fire, even though i lit in the fireplace, where fires are generally allowed.

340
Villagers mind if I [p]ush their lumber into the fire place, but they don't separately mind if I light it on fire and they don't charge me for the damaged goods.

Villagers don't mind if I [t]hrow their lumber into the fireplace, but they do charge me for it, which is fair.

341
I confess I don't know anything about coat colour variation in domesticated reindeer, so perhaps it is intentional, but I noticed these reindeer are all the same colour. Perhaps they could come in different shades of grey, like the rams and sheep do.

If you press [7] in game, it'll clean up the tiles you haven't visited in a long time -- only tiles that don't have any of your things in them--, which will make the file size smaller

belatedly, if your dog (or other animal) is perpetually escaping, unleash it and releash it. it'll calm down.

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / [3.60 beta-hotfix 2] villagers don't cook fish
« on: September 18, 2019, 10:27:08 PM »
I have given everybody (including the children, the sage, the craftsmen, the women, the hunter, the peasant, etc.) in this village a roach, a bream, or a perch. I have spent about 6 days in the village so far - it is right by a lake so I am fishing for myself too. But nobody is doing any cooking.

I know they are neither hunting NPCs nor companions but it is easier to stumble on NPCs in a village and I wanted to see the things I have read about in news.txt

345
Oh! That's a clever trick.
