Gameplay questions / Re: How many seeds do you plant per square?
« on: October 24, 2019, 09:04:23 PM »
It's easy enough to just prepare more soil for planting. Suppose your first seed will sprout 1 plant and your next will sprout 5, if you plant them in the same place, you get 5 for 2 seeds. if oyu plant them in 2 tiles then you get 6 for 2 seeds. 5 < 6.

I found some human tracks near my home, the remains of a fire, some lynx bones, and a lot of arrows laying around. I eventually caught up with the adventurer who had been hunting there. I think he should try to collect some of his arrows after he is done hunting -- he shouldn't succeed at finding all of them but if he happens to be within a few tiles of his  arrow he should pick it up.

I noticed the arrows didn't have ownership on them though when I picked them up, so I guess it'd be tricky to work out which arrows he should feel free to take and which he should leave. If I leave arrows around my settlement then they are mine but if I shot an arrow farther away from my settlement and don't collect it then it would be fair if some adventurer took it.

I had a ball of 65ft of birch bark. I tanned a reindeer calf hide with it. Now I have a ball of 80 ft of birch bark that it s 0.8 used up. I guess this checks out mathematically that now I have 64 feet of birch bark but it is confusing like this.

I can provide a save if you want.

Gameplay questions / Re: crafting items would take far too long?

yeah, it's really hard to get a fine stone axe.

It can be any of those things, but usually it's that you don't have the right tool, for example if you're trying to use a knife for a cutting weapon task that really wants an axe, or you're trying to use a stone axe to make boards (only fine stone axe can make boards)

Sometimes you are right on the cusp of being able to do it, for example you can make a wooden shovel with a stone axe but only when you get a good roll, so it's worth it to try again a few times when you get that message, just in case.

Some tasks, like wooden stakes, you can only make them 1 at a time if you have bad tools (like trying to use a knife instead of an axe)

I do recommend avoiding quests that you find boring, because games are supposed to be fun, not boring. But if you want to know how I solve these quests, I'll lay out my strategy.

For the bird thief quest:

The way I do it: the NPC tells me to go, for example, 4 km, in some direction, say NorthWest. This means 31-40 tiles so I walk 31 squares in that direction, mark a wilderness map tile as being 31, then go further to mark tile 40. I compare this ten by ten region with the F6 map: you're guaranteed to be within the circle ont he F6 map but you're not guaranteed to be in this 10x10 square, because it might just as well be 25 tiles exactly northwest and the another 6-16 west of that, but if you start at the 31 point and then imagine a line perpendicular to that , that will tell you the limit of where it can be, and a similar perpendicular line in the next direction.

So now you have a parallelogram and a circle and you only have to search the tiles where they intersect -- they might not even intersect that much. You only have to look at the tiles that match the description like "coniferous forest bordering on heathland to the east" which doesn't mean that the traps will be right near the border between the heathland and the coniferous forest, it just means "somewhere in a coniferous forest tile which has a heathland tile east of it".

If the tile is spruce mire or coniferous forest, then your work is harder because you won't be able to just zoom in and immediately spot it; you'll need to climb a tree. drop all of your equipment and make sure you are unburdened and clime up. You can use the mouse wheel to scroll out. The loop snares are a little hard to spot but the feathers show up very well.

If I don't see any, I zoom out and drop a branch on the wilderness map so I will know that I have searched the tile already. I prefer this to cluttering up the F6 map with markers.

The lost pet quest is harder, and it's not worth it for a sheep, you only get 5 squirrel hides for a sheep, but for a cow or a bull or a reindeer it is worth it - you can get about 17 squirrel hides for a cow. I do the parallelogram circle intersection thing again and then this is kind of tedious but I watch youtube videos while I'm doing it so it's less tedious, but I go into stealth mode to train stealth and I just walk in a straight line from one edge to the other, zooming out every 64 steps to drop a branch so that later i'll be able to see which tiles i've been through and then I literally just explore the whole thing, systematically and methodically. Combing through a series of zoomed in maps like this spawns a lot of game so I usually wind up with some kills as a result of all this, and it trains my stealth and tracking up by a lot too.

I will try to pictures of the circle parallelogram thing next time I get the quest

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: Pawboards not so good for trading now?
« on: October 11, 2019, 08:47:51 PM »
I've noticed this too. It says in news.txt that  villagers are less interested int hem now, but it is surprising that the cap is 0 fox traps in most villages

Quote
- balanced: villagers' interest to buy paw-board fox traps

Trading paw-board fox traps could be used an exploit as villagers did buy them without any reasoning.
Now there's a cap for villagers' interest in paw-board fox trap.

Gameplay questions / Re: Measurements for terrain map and wilderness.

It says in news.txt that you won't learn unless it's at least 5 tiles away.

Version: 3.14-b3

- balanced: skill improvement with target practice

    * Target practice skill improvement rate has been decreased a bit.
        * Throwing/shooting at targets less than 5 tiles away isn't considered
a proper target practice and doesn't improve your skills.

Not bugs / Re: Wild animals suiciding on melting ice?
« on: September 29, 2019, 09:52:58 AM »
I've seen it happen even when I'm not chasing them. There's a period of time in autumn and spring when it is worthwhile to take a walk around the circumference of the lake I live near with the screen zoomed out all the way because I might find a carcass - but they rot at normal speed in the water, not preserved by the cold like they would on dry land, so often by the time i see the carcass it is rotten.

I guess what happens is: there's that time of the year when the ice is thick enough that the player character can mostly walk on it but if they go out too far they might hear a cracking sound or they might fall in without warning. For animals this is happening too. if the ice is way too thin for their weight then just like the player gets the "are you sure?" message, the animal definitely doesn't risk it, but if the ice is almost thick enough to hold them, the animal can make the wrong decision.

in my experience it happens to about 0-1 animals by my lake per risky-ice season and sometimes it is just a hare or fox earlier in the season, sometimes an elk later on.

I think this is a rounding error. If it's 1.1 lb then it rounds up to 2, for all items not just this one. but if you compare the weight of your total inventory with the weight after you drop it, you'll learn the true weight.

I hired a companion just now and we saw a small forest reindeer so I asked him to kill it. The reindeer didn't move or flee and we were able to walk right up to it and kill it. Not sure what happened there. Then I asked the companion to skin it. He said he would do his best. I decided to skin it too, while he was working. I got a 9lb harsh forest reindeer skin, and he got a 10 lb forest reindeer skin. Then I asked him to butcher it (it's possible my prior "skin and butcher command" was still in effect but anyway, i asked him again). Again I decided to "help" him butcher it. The timer counted up and down, I think because we were both working on the same creature and it got confused. I wound up with 83 forest reindeer cuts and my companion got 32 forest reindeer cuts, which is a lot more than I would expect for a small forest reindeer in late winter.

A save is available on request.

I guess I didn't visit enough villages with reindeer. Thanks, Sami!

Suggestions / Re: Fish for credit.
« on: September 20, 2019, 07:38:20 PM »
when i was in a similar situation, i traded fresh roasted fish for anything they had: smoked fish, dried fish, leather ropes. eventually, i could trade things for an axe. they restock once a week but only when you're not looking, so spend some time away from them while you are fishing, or visit one on even weeks and the other on odd weeks
