Solved'n'fixed bug reports / [3.60 beta-hotfix 2] villagers don't cook fish
« on: September 18, 2019, 10:27:08 PM »
I have given everybody (including the children, the sage, the craftsmen, the women, the hunter, the peasant, etc.) in this village a roach, a bream, or a perch. I have spent about 6 days in the village so far - it is right by a lake so I am fishing for myself too. But nobody is doing any cooking.

I know they are neither hunting NPCs nor companions but it is easier to stumble on NPCs in a village and I wanted to see the things I have read about in news.txt

Not bugs / [3.60 beta-hotfix 2] game froze
« on: September 18, 2019, 06:28:03 PM »
I don't know if this is a problem with wine or with the game. I am just outside a village, peeling a tree in a neighbouring tile, so there is a lot of NPC activity around.

Here's the tail of msglog.txt

Code: [Select]
(143270):q8g8:[#]{01B40362}      | Using: TIMBERCRAFT
(143270):q8g8:[#]{01B40362}      | Timbercraft option: Peel bark from a tree
(147870):q8g8:[?]{01B40362}      | (1) You need knife for peeling bark - preferably a small knife.
(AB5700):q8g8:[+]{01B40362}      | The fine kaumolais knife in your inventory will be used.
(000000):q8g8:[O]{01B40362}      | Ok, you have all the necessary equipment!
(A80000):q8g8:[!]{01B40362}      | The kaumolais knife is a tolerable tool here and its fine quality certainly helps.
(000000):q8g8:[Y]{01B40362}      | You hear a bark from the north-west.
(3C5A98):q8gb:[:]{01B40362}      | It starts to rain.
(AB5700):q8gb:[+]{01B40362}      | After careful peeling you managed to harvest a ball of birch-bark strip (50 ft) from this tree.
(A80000):q8gb:[!]{01B40362}      | There's a pine blocking your way!

wine is outputting this message periodically, even now since it has frozen:

Code: [Select]
0009:fixme:imm:ImeSetCompositionString PROBLEM: This only sets the wine level string
0009:fixme:imm:ImeSetCompositionString Reading string unimplemented
0009:fixme:imm:NotifyIME NI_CLOSECANDIDATE

The game is completely frozen, doesn't react to any key presses, but the window can still be resized. My cpu usage is only at 37% and RAM is only at 35% usage. I am going to have to kill the process,  but before i do that, i will make a tarball of my character directory. Do you want me to send it to you?

I'm not sure if they're barking at me or at my pig. I'm not even sure if this is a bug -- they don't know me yet, and dogs bark at strangers. anyway, i can provide a save if you want it.

I have a stack of 3 cords in my inventory of 15ft each. I dry some meat, it asks me how many I want to use 1, 2, or 3. When I select 1, it correctly uses 25 feet of cord. But it should not ask me how many to use anymore.

50
If you start constructing a fence when you are ready to drop, it places the initial fence on the map, but when you try to continue it after sleep, it demands more wooden stakes. you have to deconstruct it before you can continue. This is an old bug and was present in previous versions.

Also the grid lines show faintly on the ice, even with [MAP_GRID:NO].

I have been noticing this for a while. Whenever you encounter forest reindeer, use F3 to look at them. There are does and calves but no stags. I haven't seen a single forest reindeer stag since gender was implemented. I have seen both reindeer stags  and does for sale in northern villages.

Also I have never seen a baby hare  but I haven't encountered enough hares to be sure that I just haven't got lucky yet; after all it took me many games to see a single bear cub and it may be the same with hares. But I have encountered hundreds of forest reindeer by now and all of them have been female.

Code: [Select]

(143270):a2j9:[#]{07A9064B}      | You feel comfortable.
(AB5700):a2ja:[+]{07A9064B}      | You gently set the dried bream on the ground as a sacrifice.
(143270):a2ja:[#]{07A9064B}      | You feel a bit unsteady.
(AB5700):a2ja:[+]{07AA064B}      | You gently set the trout on the ground as a sacrifice.
(143270):a2ja:[#]{07AA064B}      | You feel comfortable.

Suggestions / Secret Female Quests
« on: November 02, 2018, 07:56:08 AM »
The only NPCs who give out secret quests (the ones that the whole village doesn't know about) are males: there's the trapping quest, the give me your knife quest, maybe a few others, but always a male.

This means that it's not really worth it to talk to the women in the village at all, because if there's a public quest then anybody can tell you about it, so asking a guy has you covered, and if there's a secret quest then you have to talk to potentially all of the men but you can skip the women.

Sometimes a women can be the quest giver (the take me to your home region quest), but that's a public quest that everybody knows about.

tl;dr: The next time more quests are added, it would be nice if there were some quests that only the female NPCs know about

I've tried with a few different "base rock" tiles, like the one shown in this image. I've tried being naked and leaving all my stuff on the shore and swimming out to it and I've tried just dropping my whole inventory on my punt at my feet on the one tile. I think both of these methods worked in 3.40 but I tried them both just in case. I tried at a "crag" tile too, which didn't work (but it didn't in 3.40 either).

Am I doing something wrong? Has it changed? Or it's a bug? I can provide a save for this character if needed.

I got this ram from the not all who wander are lost start:

Code: [Select]
(143270):i7ga:[#]{00CF0343}      | CONTAINER OPTIONS: Fill with water, or milk into
(147870):i7ga:[?]{00CF0343}      | To fill that wooden bowl you need water or an animal to milk.
(000000):i7ga:[T]{00CF0343}      | The ram bleats.
(000000):i7ga:[A]{00CF0343}      | Alright. Thank you for the milk, ram.

It is an intersex ram.

eta: I bought a bull and it also produces milk.

General Discussion / ##urw IRC Chatroom
« on: September 13, 2017, 05:56:29 PM »
This is a migration of the old IRC topic from the old forum. It has some replies there that you may want to read which I won't be copying over.

I made an IRC chatroom. The idea is that it would be open all the time and people could lurk in it and now and then conversation could happen. Rules for conduct would be same as the forums -- don't be mean to each other. :)

Click here for instructions on how to use URWBot

How to join in:

IRC newbies
Go here: https://web.libera.chat/

Pick a name for yourself (preferrably your forum name so we know who you are, or if not then at least use the same name every time you join the channel)

In the "channels" box, type ##urw

Fill out the captcha and type connect.

The channel is ##urw not #urw because # channels are for official channels maintained by organisations -- so like if Sami wanted to own the channel because it's his game. ## channels are for unofficial groups, like this fan based channel.

Slightly more advanced

Download a program to connect to IRC. There are a lot of these. There's http://www.mirc.com/ for Windows and http://pidgin.im/ which works on windows/mac/linux. There's http://www.irssi.org for those of us who like to live in a terminal window.

You need to connect to libera. there might be some gui feature you could use or there might be a box to type in.

irc.libera.chat
port 6697 for TLS OR port 6667 for plaintext

see https://libera.chat/ for network information).

you might want to set it to autojoin ##urw

you might need to type something like this:

Code: [Select]
/connect irc.libera.chat
/join ##urw

after the first command you get a wall of text welcoming you to libera, after the second you join the channel.

If anyone is using irssi, I'm happy to paste from my .irssi/config if you want autojoin. If you're using something with a gui it probably has a button that'll do that for you.

basic irc commands

you might want to register your name so that nobody else can pretend to be you. type:
Code: [Select]
/msg nickserv register password email@address.com
where password is your new irc password and email@address.com is your real e-mail address.

after that, every time you sign on, you have to type
Code: [Select]
/msg nickserv identify password
(your program can do that automatically for you if you set it up)

you might want to send a private message to someone in the channel. do that by typing
Code: [Select]
/msg nickname hi
sometimes instead of saying something you want to do an action. type this without the space between / and me:
Code: [Select]
/ me catches a fish with a rock
this will display as

Code: [Select]
***Plotinus catches a fish with a rock
if your username is Plotinus, which it is not, because I registered that nickname.

if someone is annoying you, you can ignore them

Code: [Select]
/ignore nickname
if you don't want to ignore them anymore:

Code: [Select]
/unignore nickname
If you want to change your nickname, type this:
Code: [Select]
/nick NewNickName
If you need more help, here's a list of commands:

Code: [Select]
/help
then if you want to know more about a command, for example "away", type:

Code: [Select]
/help away

Rules

1) no spam -- spambots will be banned without warning.
2) don't be mean
2a) don't be racist, homophobic, sexist, etc.
3) off topic chit chat is okay but keep it friendly for all ages.
3a) no one cares what you do with your "spear" when it's not slaying njerpez.
4) if someone is annoying you, use /ignore
5) if you want to share a chatlog elsewhere on the internet because something funny happened, it is polite to ask the participants of the conversation first if that's okay.
5a) nonetheless, this is a public channel that anyone can join, so think about how much private information you want to share about yourself.

More rules can be added as we need them.

Go to this page: http://www.spotchat.org/connect.html
In the box where it says Nickname, type a name you want to use.
In the box where it says Channel, delete #spotchat and type #urw
Then press start!

Using a client:

connect to irc.spotchat.org

once connected, type /join #urw

General Discussion / Official Legacy Character Thread (multiplayer urw)
« on: September 11, 2017, 12:54:41 PM »
Making a new thread for this so that we can have all the pertinent info in the OP. This is a migration of the legacy character thread from the old forum. There are some screenshots and stories of older characters in that thread that you should read but I won't copy here.

In ##urw, we have been playing legacy characters together. This post is to make coordination of the legacy characters easier.

Rules:
  • When it is your turn, play one month in game, then pass it on to the next person.
  • You have 1 real life month to play your turn. If you don't manage to pass the character on in that time, we will mark you away and send the file you received to the next person in line. You are welcome to come back any time. If you are getting close the deadline it is okay to pass on in the middle of the month, better to pass it on than not.
  • All characters share the same "next" order so that always the person who is next is the person who hasn't played in the longest. New people start at the front.
  • You can do whatever you want during your turn. Ask urwbot for a quest and/or a rule if you aren't sure what to do.
  • Try not to die. Before doing something dangerous, take dogs with you and hire some companions.
  • If you die anyway, let us know what happened, and then we'll make a new character. No savescumming.
  • Before making a new character, check that there is someone to pass the character onto with "urwbot, legacy players"
  • If you want to make a new character, ask urwbot for a hard or insane start like so: "urwbot, start hard" or "urwbot, start insane." Play the full first month of the character's life and have it ready to send before adding it to the bot.
  • Inside the character's folder is _notes.txt with a little history of what happened during the previous months of the character's life. read it when you get the character, then update it before you pass it on.
  • Use map markers to explain stuff like "meat drying by this shelter" or "this village is mad at us" so we know.

How to use urwbot to join the legacy game:

You can talk to urwbot with /msg urwbot COMMAND or urwbot, COMMAND. All commands related to the legacy character start with "legacy"

  • legacy join YOUREMAILADDRESS  - join the legacy game. your email will be kept private except that it will be PMed to the person who has a character to send you. A zipped character folder can be like 10-20MB so make sure you have room in your e-mail for that.
  • legacy leave - stop playing legacy games entirely (first pass on the character you have to someone else though!)
  • legacy away - go on vacation from legacy games. no characters will be sent to you but you can come back later.
  • legacy back - return from away, receive characters again
  • legacy mail - if you are next in line, get the email address of the person to send your character to
  • legacy mail YOURNEWEMAILADDRESS - change your email address.
  • legacy sent - tell urwbot you have sent your character to the next person in line. now you are in line for receiving a new character again.
  • legacy new NAME - you made a new character and want to send it to somebody. Don't do this if there are already 3-4 characters in circulation.
  • legacy next - find out who is next (the title of the chatroom should have this info too)
  • legacy char - find out which legacy characters are alive
  • legacy players - find out who is currently active.
  • legacy died - report to urwbot that your character has died. it will be removed from the roster and you'll be put back in line to wait for a new character.
  • legacy rule NAME - find out the rules for a character.
  • legacy rule RULE - set a new rule for the character that you have.

Sometimes when you burn spruce twigs on the end of the trail and wait around, it doesn't work. I have a save available of a character in this situation, Reko.

I got the quest, killed the lynx that was in the area (I've noticed that the farm animal won't come if the predator is nearby but maybe that's just a superstition?) and skinned it and cooked it's meat and then I went back to the pig tracks and followed them to the very end.

I cut spruce twigs from the tree nearby and then without picking them up lit them on fire (maybe this is the problem? maybe i should have picked them up and then dropped them again?)

i waited for about 2-3 hours, no pig.

I tried lighting fires one at a time on the empty tiles surrounding that one, just in case there was a track there that I missed, waited a couple hours for each one, didn't work of course. I haven't burnt a fire on any of the other spaces with tracks so the trail should be preserved. I've tried tracking all around that area in places where i couldn't see tracks, just in case there was a gap in the trail and it continued but i'm pretty sure i was in the right place.

My character is saved standing on the burnt ashes of the fire that was on the last track in the trail. no pig anywhere :(

General Discussion / Suggested forum modifications
« on: April 23, 2017, 04:08:16 PM »
In this thread we will propose changes to the board system and discuss forum bugs we encounter.

BBCode changes:
  • Marquees are annoying (anything that moves is annoying) and should be removed.
  • As Sami noted elsewhere, the like feature doesn't work yet.
  • Spoiler boxes: A way to hide longer text or large images inside a box. It would display as a button that shows the hidden stuff beneath it when pressed. The bbcode could look like this:

Code: [Select]
[spoiler=a screenshot] hidden stuff here [/spoiler]
    Bug:
    • Intermittently when browsing the forum I get a HTTP 408 error. Refreshing fixes it. The timeout thing is weird because it happens immediately on clicking the link without waiting anytime for the page to load. There is a screenshot behind the spoiler.

      Spoiler: show

      [/li][/list]

    Mentions:
    • Mentions send an email, and there should be some way to choose whether to be emailed or not.

    Forum sign up process:
    • When you sign up for the forum, you don't have to validate your email address to prove that you are the owner of your email address. This should be some link with a token that you click so it knows it's really you.

edit: crossed out the changes already implemented.
