Gameplay questions / Re: How do I ski
« on: April 07, 2021, 05:02:08 PM »
Skiing is one of the things that's going to change in the next version to be modelled even more realistically. Right now, it's just a matter of snow depth, but in 3.70, at certains times of year it'll melt to slush on warm sunny days and then a hard crust will freeze over it at night that is much easier to ski on.
Wouldn't that wear down skis though?
It probably won't in game, but in real life wood sliding on icy snow would wear down from friction.

Off-topic / Re: Hunting by car
« on: April 07, 2021, 01:30:23 AM »
Hunting gives life different colours and an adrenaline rush. I carry a gun with me [...] I hunt doves, quails, bunnies
Adrenaline rush from hunting little defenseless creatures?
And hunting them with overpowered weapon allowing you to instantly kill animal that is far away, by just moving your finger?

Nice

Gameplay questions / How do I ski
« on: April 07, 2021, 12:42:07 AM »
I just made skis, and tried to go on first hunt with them. Turns out it was actually easier to hunt when there was no snow, because even with skis i get fatigued just from "walking", and I can't even run, so it's hard to make game flee. I followed an elk for quite some time, but when it finally got slightly fatigued, I was almost exhausted. Soon after that I couldn't catch up to it anymore, because my skiing speed was 1km.
It will get easier, when I level up skiing a bit, right?

General Discussion / Re: Tree sap/syrup in spring?

Slavs drank birch sap too.
It is the first time I hear about making syrup from anything else than maple though.

General Discussion / Re: Taking on a Njerpez w/ a dog
« on: April 06, 2021, 04:53:59 PM »
For me the dog always flees as soon as I shoot arrow at him.
It does turn tail and flee for x turns (depending on wound severity) and I do dislike the prompt “you’ve been attacked from out of sight!”
I didn't fight many Njerpez with dogs yet. But I fought other enemies with dogs, maybe like 10, and I have never been attacked by a dog from out of sight. I just make sure I hit the dog, if possible two times. Then I just move back in the direction opposite to the dog, while shooting at human. I think dog came back only in one of those fights. And I just shot it, and it fled again.

I have some hunting related questions.
1. Does someone know to what % of fatigue should I run, until I switch back to walking?
I didn't do any maths, but to me it seems, like you should run for as short as possible - the way to achieve highest average speed would be run one tile, walk until rested, repeat. Am I right?
2. Is there a good way, to prevent game from running into forest? Should I just run diagonally in the direction of forest? Maybe throwing rock to the left side of animal makes it run to the right?
3. To know in which direction should I "herd" my prey, to avoid forests better, I would have to look at the map. If I press enter during hunt, and then zoom back in to wilderness, will this have any negative effects? Like game getting extra turn, or a few?

Gameplay questions / How to quickly change weapons?
« on: April 03, 2021, 07:16:29 PM »
Sometimes I want to change bow to spear, but spear is two handed, so I have to unequip bow after (or before).
Is it possible to just somehow equip X, and unequip everything else at the same time, so I don't have to use 2 turns just to change weapon?

Edit: And the other way around it is even harder. You have to unequip spear, then equip bow, and then arrow. At least afaik.

Gameplay questions / Re: Multiplayer - what are your opinions?
« on: April 03, 2021, 04:23:28 PM »
Would you play a multiplayer version of Urw, eg survival, realistic gameplay, 2D graphics and so forth?
Yes, but without PvP. PvP only works well, if your skill matters a lot. And in this game very skilled, veteran player with just spawned character could get easily killed, by a new player whose character has much better skills, and is generally better prepared for fight.
I think it would be interesting but maybe too competitive because of permadeath (annoying to be killed by a kid that could train skills for 100x hours more than you).
Exactly. Also someone could grief your camp, and steal your items while you are offline (or even just away from camp, hunting elk, or something).

Probably only form of PvP which would be good in this game would be some kind of tribe wars, which you would have to agree to take part in.
And for this to make sense permadeath should be off for these wars, because PvP wouldn't be fun if it would mean ~60-80% chances that you will loose all your skills, items, etc.
I think just respawning without items, and with major wounds, maybe even some additional penalties (respawn sickness) would do.
I don’t see it would work. Not when the game is turn based. Unless you’re suggesting tanning a rinsed elk skin really takes 8h of real life hours too?
There is a few possible solutions.
1. Duration of all actions can be shortened. But it would change game a lot.
2. Actions are performed only at certain times. Everyone just prepared what they want to have done, and it is waiting. Then when that certain times come, these actions are done, and time is skipped, for all players.
3. But probably the best solution would be just letting the process finish on it's own. I.e. player starts building wall, he can go hunting, and when he comes back the wall is built.

And of course game couldn't be turn based in multiplayer.
Multi player invariably results in sacrifices of single player functionality because they don't work in multi player
Multiplayer and singleplayer mode can be different. A good example is Mount&Blade: Warband. It's a good game, where you start as foreign poor adventurer, you can gather an army, win battles, conquer cities, etc.
Just like in UnrealWorld, type of time flow makes it hard, to make it multiplayer. So they made multiplayer without campaign. You just pick your class, equipment, and take part in battles, sieges, etc. Multiplayer is just something else, and I think it could be done so in UrW.
I have yet to try a multiplayer survival game, that makes me feel as relaxed as this game does. Heck, I can't think of a single game at all, that I can spend so much time in while actually relaxing and enjoying myself all the way.

My feeling is that gaming overall have an extreme focus on competitiveness, effectiveness and grinding for you to beat everyone else. There are always those people who spends the majority of their time getting better than everyone else. I see it in the MOBA I've played for years, a casual CS:GO game, or people actively trying to ruin each others camps in DayZ for example (And I think the communities suffer from this, with extreme toxicity as to ranking and such).

When I come home from an 40 hour working week, I really can't be bothered in the long run to get home to some competitive gaming experience, since I'm already exhausted.
Yeah, I agree with you. But if someone was willing to make multiplayer UrW he can just simply do it without PvP.

Suggestions / Re: More ancient weapons.

Lack of evidence doesn't mean it wasn't used. Atlatls were easy to make and powerful, and they were used pretty much everywhere, so I am pretty sure at some point they were used in Finland, and as I already said even if they don't really match iron age Finland, they fit better than bastard swords, or two handed swords.

Tamils also used atlatls until 19th century.
Some african, and filipino tribes use it to this day too. And I think eskimos use it for fishing as well.
Atlatls are even better than bow for hunting very big animals, and we do have in game a culture of strong hunters, who hunt big animals, so even if it didn't remain in real world Finland until this time period, it would make sense if it remained in UnReal world Finland.
Also atlatls surely do make much more sense, than bastard swords, for this time period.

Suggestions / More ancient weapons.
« on: March 01, 2021, 04:14:05 PM »
In that period of time people used also weapons like atlatl, rabbit sticks/throwing sticks, slings.
Not sure about Finland, but atlatl is great, especially for bigger animals or spear fishing, and quite easy to build, so I think they must have used it.
Rabbit stick is powerful weapon, useful for hunting small game, and it is even used to this day by aboriginal australians (boomerangs).
Slings are not very accurate, but they are powerful blunt weapons, and you can just find ammunition for it on the ground.
I think it would be cool to see these weapons in game.

Bug reports / Taken items on a raft.

If you put an item with (taken) on your raft, you can't move it anymore, because there is "too much load".

Gameplay questions / Re: Does killing dogs have consequences?
« on: February 23, 2021, 11:57:17 AM »
No, moving items over distance aggravates townsfolk.
Also they have "ESP" about stealing, it doesn't matter if anyone sees you. Most likely because you could pick up something out of sight, then walk up to a random person and 'pay for goods'. Somehow the NPC needs to the totality of what you 'have'.
But if I try to buy something - pick it up, go to pay for it to someone, and then change my mind, because it's not worth the price to me, I just drop it where I talked with NPC and nothing happens.

Also to not create a next thread, since this is kinda related - how far does information about murder travel? In my second game I was living mostly around one village, and went to their neighbours, stole something, and ran away. Since one sage was chasing me I killed him. Then I came back to the first village. After few hours two NPCs talked to me about murder, but nothing happened.
And the next day I went to third village who was even further away from that murder village, and then instantly some NPC told me their neighbours warned them and they attacked and killed me.

Pastures belong to villages, so you're actually squatting on their land.

You can steal their harvest on the fields and pastures as long as nobody sees you, although I think they get suspicious if you steal much (I haven't tried, though).
If nobody sees me?
Does that mean I could pick up items I like, drop them near villge border, and then come back at night, and take them, when everybody is sleeping?
