Thanks for replies. This is good because it means armor weight and armor "importance"  seem to correspond pretty well. For example cuirass weighs a lot and a belt very little but cuirass is more likely hit.

It also means things like iron kneecops and coudes might be more trouble than they are worth, unless you want to go for a full suit.

On warmth issue, I feel like some exposed body parts are not an issue if you can keep yourself warm enough. I have not tested this much but I think most of the time I dont get frost bite if character is warm even with some exposed parts, especially face is often exposed. Im still wondering if protecting larger core parts warms you more than covering small extremities

2
Basically, are larger body parts (like chest) more likely to get hit in combat than small body parts (like groin). If I have to choose, should I use my armor on larger parts or does it matter?

For example, Cuirass and belt both cover two body parts (chest and waist by cuirass, hips and groin by belt) but are they equally protective? Common sense says I should obviously choose the cuirass to protect larger area but I dont know if the game system reflects this

Similarly, are larger body parts more significant for warmth, or is warmth based on number of covered body parts only?

Gameplay questions / Re: Is there any point retting nettles?
« on: August 10, 2023, 01:50:57 PM »
Thanks for replies. It seems there is no reason (or very little reason) to go trough retting for nettles compared to extracting fibre straight from plants. Maybe I could add to suggestions that fibre yields could be changed for nettles.

Thanks, this is very useful knowledge.

I knew that some fish could only be caught in certain places but I was not sure if specific locations matter for the amount of fish caught.

It is very possible my standing with the spirits could have impacted the result. A lot of that catch rotted to make it worse. I don't actually know if letting fish or meat spoil will decrease your standing with the spirits but I just like to think so. Catching more than I can use is kind of wasteful.

Does anyone know if time of year impacts the fishing in game? In game encyclopedia mentions salmon being common in rapids during spawning season (which I think should be in fall) but I have caught plenty of them at other times too.

This bug is still present in the version 3.81 unmodified game.

Gameplay questions / What actually affects fishing outcome?
« on: August 02, 2023, 12:05:45 PM »
I have been trying to figure out if different spears have better outcomes with fishing. Yesterday I made a character with near perfect (98%) fishing skill and set out to test different tools.

I made it to rapids and fished three game days, ten times each day, with each of these: javelin, small trident, trident, and wide trident, each of normal quality. ( I had to take break days and first did two days with each tool, then one more day with each because results were inconclusive).

In three full days of fishing, I caught 2 salmons with javelin, 3 with small trident, 5 with trident, and 5 with wide trident.

It seems, trident and wide trident are more useful but I don't think my test is very reliable because I don't know what other factors affect fishing outcomes. For example, I caught almost half of the fish on the frist days of fishing (7 out of 15 total were caught on the first days).

I tried to keep the fishing spot the same but I don't know if the spot gets "dry" after a while which would skew the result towards the first fishing tool used. I also don't know if some spots are just inherently better than others, or if fishing too much will anger the spirits and reduce my catch. I should repeat the test by save scumming by copying the character folder and repeating each try with same conditions but that was too tedious for me.

I know a lot of mechanincs in the game are ambiguous on purpose so it does not become too "gamey" but I would still like to know what ways I can affect my fishing outcome. I don't have much fishing experience in real life but I feel that when I was a kid, the most important factor in getting catch was finding the right spot. You might get nothing all day untill you find the perfect spot and then reel them in as fast as you can.

Does anyone have any experience what affects fishing outcomes in the game?

General Discussion / Re: Thoughts on All Crops
« on: August 01, 2023, 11:36:34 PM »
I guess you mean produced quantity from plant with the 'stack size' (stack in general is all items in inventory or ground that has matching properties i.e. 590 lake reed roots or 16 fine arrows)
You can open flora_xyz.txt file and the harvestable amount is in parenthesis immediately after the plant's name. e.g.
.Turnip.     (20)
.Pea.        (5)

Yes, number of plants in a single tile is what I meant. I did not realize that number in parenhtesis in the flora-files was the indicator for that. Now I know, thank you.

I think its okay value for clayweed because modifying that value will probably change both wild and player planted clayweeds. I think you should be able to grow more clayweed in one tile but then it might become extremely abundant in the wild. Too bad these can't be edited separately.

Development News / Re: Version 3.81 released for Windows

This is great! I really like that pausability has made it possible to make boards with stone axes (so I can finally craft that paddle and get my raft out of this small island).

You made netmaking a new skill and while I understand that any of the old skills dont really apply to netmaking, it seems a bit odd to have a whole new skill for one very specific task. Is there a chance that this is later combined with some more general (new) craft skill? Maybe netmaking and needleworking for clothes share some similarity?

This is great info. I have not paid enough attention to stack sizes previously. It definitely makes some plants much more efficient than others. I thought clayweed should be great but stack size is a bummer. Hard to find informaation on stack sizes too.

Very much agree on lake reed, it's great. It almost makes the game too easy. When lake reed is in season, you can quickly collect very large amounts of it and as far as I can tell, it does not spoil. It nearly makes cultivating other plants pointless.

I feel that In general plants should spoil faster. Roots might keep a year in the cellar but most others should be dried and then boiled before consumption. For example, dried beans keep very long but can't be used as is.

I discovered this while attempting to build a post spruce without a cutting weapon. I had to cancel building the post spruce but I discovered that I was now able to walk trough that spruce.

The bug happens every time I attempt the building but cancel before I actually start. Tried this on multiple characters, and it persists.

Modding / I added some knit clothing and would love comments
« on: July 16, 2023, 09:17:18 PM »
I have added some knitted clothes to my game because I wanted more use for yarn and more options to furs. I know BAC mod already has some knitted items but they use wool yarn and I think weaving linen and nettle cloth is a bit much for me.

If I'm correct, single needle knitting was a thing at least in scandinavia around 1000 years ago and probably in Finland too. They likely used wool but I don't see any particular reason why you couldn't use other fibres if you really wanted to. Does anyone know if you could knit usable mittens using linen or nettle?

I haven't done any knitting in real life so my estimates on time and yarn needed might be way off. I might add some time to these when pauseable crafting is added.

I would love to hear some comments or suggestions!

There is knitting needle:

Suggestions / Fishing benefits of different spears could be clearer
« on: July 10, 2023, 10:00:11 PM »
Its difficult to find info on how good different spears are for fishing. Wiki says that tridents are better than others but I can't find a source for this. Game encyclopedia only says "used for fishing" about tridents.

I'm assuming tridents are better than for example a javelin but because fishing results are quite random it is hard to test this in game.

Maybe wiki could mention how good fishing tools different spears are, for example "very good for fishing" or "awkward for fishing". Or it could be written as comparison to fishing rod: "as good as a fishing rod", "much worse than a fishing rod. "

I feel tridents should be about as effective as (primitive) fishing rods and javelin much less effective. Also some kind of "wood trident" could be added for crafting: a poor weapon but okay fishing tool. It should be relatively simple to fashion some kind of pronged spear from timber and tying equipment.

Gameplay questions / Is there any point retting nettles?
« on: June 30, 2023, 08:01:44 PM »
Flax and hemp can be retted and dried for fibre extraction. Nettles can be retted but you can also extract fibre directly from harvested nettles.

Is there any reason to go trough retting and drying for nettles? I can't seem to get any higher amounts or any other advantage.

Suggestions / Re: Suggested changes to some plant nutrition values
« on: June 27, 2023, 08:58:27 AM »
You're right that berry nutrition values are definitely very close to reality. Berries don't actually have that much energy per unit of weight. Also it doesn't really matter to me if the values are exactly correct, I just feel that right now picking and eating berries in the game is counter productive and not worth the effort.

Hmm. I maybe could have clarified thatwhile  I agree that berry nutrition values are quite correct, I think some of them, like blueberry, could be increased slightly to make them more useful in the game.

Sorry about the rambling, wrote too late at night.

I really wouldn't say the berry nutrition is much off compared to the real life, but we just haven't updated it every time Fineli/THL changes the values.

You're right that berry nutrition values are definitely very close to reality. Berries don't actually have that much energy per unit of weight. Also it doesn't really matter to me if the values are exactly correct, I just feel that right now picking and eating berries in the game is counter productive and not worth the effort.

Because of how nutrition works in the game, nutritional value for most berries is just slightly below a treshold where eating berries will cause you to starve. Maybe this is realistic though, eating only berries certainly wouldn't be comfortable.

All the values have been fetched from different databases. I can't remember from where in case of lake reed (which is Phragmites australis in the game) but it is really packed with carbs and thus very nutritious. However, the levels actually change during the growing season.
And it has been used a lot back in the day - for both people and animals.  Little kids were told to have lake reed roots as a snack when they were outdoors by the lake.
You don't need much else to get a good boost of carbs and sugars if feeling a little low on energy.
Occasionally included in my personal diet too. Very precious plant - for the easy availability too.

Interesting! I knew it was edible but I could not imagine it would contain that much energy. I really need to try it.

Here again, Fineli might have had different values now than when the turnip values were initially set. Wikipedia is somewhat in line with current UrW values, though:
https://fi.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nauris

Nutritional values for turnip in the game are probably right, numbers in fineli actually seem a bit low. I was mostly making a comment that I would expect a cultivated plant like turnip to have higher nutritional value. I can definitely see why potato replaced turnip as the most popular tuber.
