Sorry for the bump of an old thread, but just curious what people might be listening to these days?  Personally, I've been quite  enjoying this album:

Trolldom, by Lord Lovidicus.  Classic 90's Dungeon Synth.  Carries a menacing but mystical mood.

Well, well, well....

Set up a bear trap on the small rock jetty where the seals seem to like to hang out.  And my guy only had 15 trap skill... Baited it with 1 roach and 1 perch, just to see if it might go for different types of fish.  a couple days later... here we are!  Time to train my club skill ;)

Welp, no sooner had I posted in this thread.... Guess what I just spotted with my new character  ;D

JP_Finn, do you find that bear traps work the best for trapping them?  Going to try setting some up in the area they hang out.

Not only have I seen them, I've killed them... My seal-tribe hunter happened to establish a camp on the northern coast and a large pod of seals were found inhabiting the area nearby.  They seem to like small rocky island chains near the shore.

they are tough little buggers to kill... they come ashore sometimes, so i endeavored to hide in a ditch near the shoreline, wait for one to come past me, then sprint out and try to cut off its escape back to the water.  They're faster than you'd think, and can take a ton of damage.  By the time I finally got one, he had like 5 javelins sticking out of him and a broken flipper, and i still had to stand there for a while and hammer on him with a club before he finally gave up the ghost.

I gave up hunting them after that - too much effort for too little gain.  Maybe traps would be better?  Perhaps you could use fish as bait?  Not sure if it works or not.

I haven't been involved in UnReal World much in the past couple years but I am sorry to hear the mod is not being actively developed at this time.  I used it a lot and had fun helping with debugging, minor though my contributions were.

I certainly understand that real-world issues can intrude and I wish the best of luck to Brygun.  This mod is a real inspiration.

If development is going to continue I'd be happy to lend a hand with debugging now and then.  I have minimal programming experience but a good bit of experience in UnReal World modding and mod debugging.

I've been away from the "scene" for a bit Brygun, but let me know if you need any help bugtesting/editing for the next update.  Shouldnt take me too long to remember how the modding infrastructure works.... I hope....

From my understanding of unreal world lore, dedicated warriors would be few and far between. Unreal world society is generally not organized enough to support specialized occupations, nor to support people who do not contribute food (other than small children and maybe the very elderly). I addition, despite the Njerpez invasion, there are not really organized wars or battles - population is too small and settlements too far apart for resource competition to be an issue.  Most unreal world cultures exist at the level of subsistence, and almost all people are generalists who know abit of everything necessary for survival. Of course most people also have some skill with bow, spear or axe out of necessity, so they can defend themselves if need be. The only culture which can support specialized occupations is the Driik, who might have dedicated warriors/guards.

Of course I could be wrong :)

Woods of Ypres really has some bangers as well "I Was Buried In Mount Pleasant Cemetery" and "Traveling Alone" are my favourites.

One Finnish group that I'm listening is called Tenhi, I don't really understand the lyrics but they are really nice songs slow, soft. My favourite is "Pojan Kiiski" I think the song is about a boy and his fish but I dunno, it is cool though.

i really like these bands as well, in addition to Sunn 0))) and Burzum.  was lucky enough to see Sunn live a few years ago.

Just saw this topic.  I must agree with trowftd, that I enjoy listening to drone whilst playing this wonderful game.  However, my favorite is neofolk and dungeon synth.

Here are some of my favorite albums.  Please give a listen to these... I feel they are very much in the spirit of UnReal World. If you like the music, please consider checking out more of the artist's work and support them by buying the album.

October Falls - Sarastus (neofolk from Finland)

Wow!  is there a plan that eventually animals such as cows and sheep will need to eat during winter, making straw a valuable resource?

Actually, I think maybe the same thing may have happened to you as to me:

https://www.unrealworld.fi/forums/index.php?topic=6188.0

It might be that there is a bug causing villagers to periodically claim Player items as their own, if they have been sitting in a village (or nearby to be close enough).  Picking up all of my own items, in this case, turned the children hostile who had stolen my gear.  Perhaps a similar thing happened to you.

Gameplay questions / Children stole my stuff??
« on: January 02, 2021, 04:39:47 PM »
I had no idea this could happen in the game!  Has anyone else had this experience?  And, if so, how did you get your stuff back?

I was sleeping in a Seal Tribe village, and had left all my stuff right outside of the door of the sauna where I was staying.  In the middle of the night, I was awoken by "strange noises" and saw two kids pick up my knives!  The kids then turned "hostile" and started running away.  I chased after them.  I tried to talk to them (no response) and tried to talk to other villagers, but saw no option to confront them about the theft.

I chased the kids down, and tried to use the "Take" command to get my stuff back but it didn't work.  So, I kicked one of them, and this turned the whole village hostile.  They then proceeded to beat & stab my character within an inch of his life.

What is going on here?  Is there any way to get your stuff back?  I find this frustrating - I like the idea of little kids stealing your stuff, but if they do, I think you should be able to confront the adults about it!

Guides and tutorials / Re: Seal hunting tactics
« on: December 30, 2020, 04:06:58 AM »
I have successfully hunted seal, but it took much patience and just as much luck.

It is true what you say - the seals will definitely "haunt" a certain area, usually a skerry.

I have had success with deadfall traps, although it seems quite random, you would need to build a lot in order to meet with predictable success.  Your best bet is probably to load the materials into your boat, unload them onto the skerry, then build the trap there.

I have also had limited success with "ambush tactics".  To succeed, you need a character with high stealth, speed, and accuracy with chosen weapon.  I found it useful to crouch in a natural low spot, like a little trench, or behind a rock.  The seals will sometimes come relatively far inland, to where they cannot easily escape back to sea.  Wear as little clothing as possible, and carry a spear (or other weapon) in both hands, then you have to wait for the seal to get to that point and get close to your position.  At the right moment, you spring out, sprint towards the seal, try to cut off its access to the water, and throw one or both spears.  One spear will almost never kill the seal - their blubber seems to be very thick, as they can take quite a lot of damage.  You may need to hit an individual seal with multiple spears before it even begins to slow down.

However, once it has several harpoons sticking out of it, it will start to slow.  Wait for it to come ashore again, then rush it with a club (or blunt side of an axe, etc) and start beating it.  Aiming for the legs/flippers seems to be a good way to keep it from getting away, then once it's mostly immobilized you can attack the skull.

Due to the damage to the hide from the spears, this usually results in a carcass that is "harmed" or worse.  But it can be done.  Also, the spears will commonly fall out in the water, or else the animal might die out there as well.  So you need a boat to collect your spears and the body.

General Discussion / Re: Humane and Proper Butchering?
« on: December 26, 2020, 06:10:02 PM »
Personally I always bludgeon their heads to death, to preserve the hide.  Even if you have no weapon you can use 0 to kick.  Probably not the most humane though.  Most humane would probably be to attack the neck with whatever your strongest weapon is.
