Gameplay questions / Stay!... Hey, that's on you!
« on: October 12, 2018, 05:29:14 AM »
I told my Companion to STAY while I tried to meet the Water Spirits at night. When I paddled back, he was floating, dead, in the rapids.

I hired another Companion. He was grievously injured by a Njerp, crippled, and dragged himself back to a shelter. When I crossed the rapids in a punt, he, too, drowned while following.

Is there a better way to make these guys STAY? These guys ruined my perfect record for returning Companions safely to their villages!

Btw, I hired a vagabond while traveling and he left me after we'd reached my homesite. It seems he can't leave the general area, due to the rapids? Anyway, I keep running into him 1 hex from where he left me. He's even returned and walked around in my cabin! He won't re-hire, not yet anyway.

Post Script: I've managed to drown another one. I guess the rule is that if they swim, which they must, there is a limit to their endurance and they'll drown if the raft trip is too long. Bah... Now I'm concerned about my animals drowning!

I'm not a long time pro, but, I've got 87 for Spear skill and the blunt end rarely damages a skin. There's been a few times, like with a fox or capercaillie, when I've actually missed clubbing them into unconsciousness with a shot to the head multiple times before I finally succeeded. The skin has suffered then, usually.

I've pelted squirrels in trees with rocks for no skin damage. By the way, always tether your dogs at a safe distance before you go to make a kill in a trap. Otherwise, they'll savage the animal and all you'll get is a harsh pelt/skin.

IF you use a club, mind that your skill with clubs is used. I've swung and hit the wrong target (NOT the head) a lot using clubs and squirrels-with-rocks rarely damages because I finish off with a spear butt to the skull.

Woohoo! I've survived winter! I'll have to wait a few weeks, yet, to start my island hideaway, although a lot of logs are already cut there. Once the ice is completely thawed, I'll return and make a new, more secure, homestead. The only downside is that there has been a lot of Njerp when I visit the area. Several are baiting my bear deadfalls...heh.

I've lost, and replaced, two dogs, one to a Njerp, one to a wolf. All my Companions have lived to return home. Lots of meat stored, lots of Njerp loot that I'd love to trade for some better tools/weapons. Sadly, many of the neighboring villages are truly poor. Even the Foreign Traders, who are hard enough to find, often have little of use to me. I've found myself trading for silver and copper goods, just to lighten my load.

Overall, it was a very safe winter. Never a hint of frostburn, a single deer stumbled into my defense traps, and nothing else even seen nearby. My trap fence, only an hour away, provided numerous elk, several rabbits gave up their furs there, even one fox! Spotted several bears across the rapids and harvested two large and a cub. One had a fine winter coat. A single wolf fell afoul of a deadfall. Even his harsh fur got me 10 Fine arrows.

It's a great beginning!

Gameplay questions / Re: All About Fishing
« on: October 08, 2018, 03:56:37 PM »
Everything went wrong for that guy. Had excellent fishing stat. However, his Building stat was zero, so it took about 1 1/2 days just to build a simple shelter. I was used to just making shelter and getting down to business. Slumping into exhaustion while doing that, FAILING to make simple javelins, really poor results from actual fishing attempts, how was I ever going to get any tools to work with.

I learned about some more about character creation from that one!

Gameplay questions / Re: Ski exploit?
« on: October 08, 2018, 08:09:12 AM »
Aye, but at 7 pounds weight, per spear? Anyway, I've traveled to 4 clan areas, none of which have any Northern tools/weapons so that's not an option, nor is any Kaumo stuff available. I'm wielding a ski stick and javelin when traveling, so I can take a shot at birds or if I don't have time to switch weapons, can utilize the javelin with my spear skill. But the Northern spear is a great suggestion!

Gameplay questions / Ski exploit?
« on: October 08, 2018, 03:54:39 AM »
I've made a decent pair of skis and ski sticks. It took little time to achieve Grandmaster status with them. However, the drawback to them is that having both hands occupied slows down my response to encounters, having to UNwield and REwield for weapons. But, I've found a method which may be an exploit.

I use letter 'A' to wield ONE ski stick and can put a weapon in the other hand. When I have my skis on, with only one ski stick, it still says my movement is skiing. Also, I can free the ski stick hand by just using the letter key for it, thus allowing dual hand use immediately, without having to UNwield everything to free both hands, so achieving the best stats for my Kaumo spear.

So, my question is, is one hand skiing an exploit?

Tedomedo- heh, I chose that 'Fisherman' as an Islander. My skills were so awful that it took over a day just to build a shelter, I didn't have a ranged weapon and had not the skill or tools to make a javelin from a staff. It was a bad one.

I thought that robbers had a distinctive look. They don't look like, say, vagabonds or traders.

I have not gotten as far as a Robber quest. I've been trying to get the Forest Spirit to appear. I do the spell, drop a silver bracelet on an ant hill and stand there all night, to no avail. Bah...

Have you ever run from a robber encounter, gone into a village, and had the robbers follow and attack inside the village? I thought that was interesting. One more thing to increase my game anxiety.

PS: Ok, Upon waking in the morning, I got a message that said 'You have Unity with the forest'. Surely, tonite the forest spirits will come! Anyway, I'll try again.

No other archers? That's intriguing. It sounds like you have a bigger group than I have yet to use.

Presently, I'm a 2-dog, 1 Companion group, because for some reason every time I go into the wild to look for traders or a bear, I've been finding Njerp. I don't sweat those who have no bow. But, when I see broad blade arrows, I get concerned. The few times I've seen robbers, I've just avoided them completely. Robbers and hand-to-hand with bears are two of the things I avoid now because they're just too dangerous. Oh, and freaking wolves, too! In the Unreal World, it's best not to try to play every hand...heh.

I've paid the latest Companions off with cheap leather armor bits, some fur clothes items, a decent ax if they say they're good with one. I'd been also giving them javelins, but, your thoughts on ranged weapons will dissuade me from that in the future. I've had a few arrows zing past my head from behind.

I keep hoping that foreign traders will offer me really good knives. I don't think they carry them for trading.

The calendar says it is now in the 8th week before Summer. Where the heck did spring go? All I've seen is heavier and heavier snows!

Anyway, thanks for the advice!

He did tag along with me. When I shot him I thought he'd be an invalid so I built a shelter over him in the woods and expected to have to maintain him there until he healed. But, when I ran back to my cabin for food, I was surprised to find he'd followed me there. Now I have to tell him to stay when I leave to check traps, etc. heh

I'm actually considering escort him back until his time is up. The problem with that is that he'll expect commensurate rewards upon release and I don't know how to determine what he'd consider a sufficient reward. I wanted to test whether or not he would be happy with some fur clothing, food, paw traps, and such.

Btw, thank you for your various replies, Palu! You've cleared up some of my in-game quandaries.

This guy is my first to reach mid-winter. I can't believe how focused one becomes on avoiding that ONE mistake that will send you back to square one. I felt it was an achievement when he trapped and killed his first bear. I don't fight bears anymore...lol. But my Companion, Grandmaster with a bow, he fights them, with a broad blade!

I accidentally shot my Companion (yes, really) and hurt him so badly that he can't walk. He's telling me he's leaving in two days (clearly holding no grudge). Is there any way I can utilize my physician skill on him? Or, on my dogs, whom I've ALSO shot in the past? For the record, I'm considered a Master with the bow...lol.

If I can't heal him, how is he going to get back to his village? Should I escort him back, before the two days is up? (Which would leave me dragging my crippled dog, too)

Also, as he says he's a master with axes, why does he wield his broad knife, even though I gave him a woodsman's ax?

Gameplay questions / Wall with shutter?, and other questions...
« on: October 05, 2018, 01:08:50 AM »
Three times I've tried to build this into my cabins and each time it defies me. When I build it on a north wall, it lines up north/south, in the middle of a gap on each side. When I build it on an east wall, it lines up east/west, same gaps on each side. Is it me or a bug?

I crossed a river near my home site and ran across a Njerp. I fought and won. Then I moved to a nearby hilltop and saw in the distance two more Njerp. Is this just odd coincidence or might it indicate a Njerp camp in that area?

I hired a Companion and, anticipating possible dangers, I outfitted him with captured lamellar cuirass and shin guards, an iron helm and a Fine spear I had traded for. It really annoyed me when he declared he was 'satisfied' with what I'd given him and KEPT IT ALL when he left. The only thing he had that I could reclaim was the food I had given him Is it a rule that anything they equip is now theirs? Will they accept clothing/food in lieu of more hard-to-get armors? Feeling badly burned! heh

If I travel with a cow/bull/sheep, is it still possible to run from an encounter?

One of my dogs was CRIPPLED in a fight. For a long time, she would not respond, would not eat, and was in continual escape mode. Eventually, as I'd kept her on a leash the whole time, she healed and was back to normal. Can an animal be PERMANENTLY damaged, beyond healing, but not die?

Does anybody else get regular arrows when trying to make blunt arrows?

General Discussion / Re: Take it or leave it - Forest Reindeer Meat
« on: October 01, 2018, 07:23:37 AM »
With a deer or elk kill, I find that every time, after skinning, butchering, and moving the kill, I've gone into total exhaustion at least twice. I bring back the bones because my dogs will eat them. The thing is, EVERYTHING else stops while this goes on because, if it's not done with immediacy, the meat will be spoiled before I can dry/smoke it, or worse, the season is wrong for either. Slip up and forget the skin and that's wasted.

Btw, I just found today, by accident, that a dog can be loaded by PUSHING the load on it. Maybe all I have to do is ; to load it? I'm pretty new. One thing at a time! heh

« on: September 30, 2018, 03:40:32 AM »
After at least 100 hours of play, I've run through over a dozen adventurers who, almost without exception, died from MY decisions. I learned some bad lessons early on. Small female bears/with cub leave one with the mistaken impression that bears are not TOO bad. Papa Bear will correct that fallacy. While the first five Njerpez may seem to be relatively soft, the sixth has uncanny skills with just his knife. Foxes can run on thin ice. Don't follow them. Robbers have a lot of friends.

My dead Father apparently took me hunting while barely clothed. Perhaps he traded most of my clothes for the Fine Kaumo spear and Fine knife? Anyway, with those, and a handaxe,  I set out.

So, the first year, mid-summer, on a new start, determined to avoid previous mistakes. Settled next to rapids on a long river. After many futile weeks of hunting just to watch my javelins run away in some wounded deer or elk, I stopped trying. It would soon be too damp to dry meat, anyway. No meat is drying, at all!

The plan was to build a cabin/smokehouse, then to trap and smoke what I could trap. I'd snare some birds, kill squirrels with rocks, and fish for daily food. Having completed building I FINALLY lucked out and killed a deer. I then wasted 180+ cuts after learning there were a few building flaws in my cabin. By the time I fixed them, the meat was spoiled. Well, another lesson learned- TEST your smokehouse, first.

Built a trap fence, nothing trapped so far. Built a shorter one. Ditto. Started building a trap fence around a small lake.

Bumped into my first Njerpez. Seen robbers once and avoided them, likewise bears. But, by this point, though, I was despairing of any success, so, I did not run. Killed him, taking 26% injury. Got his spear and some very damaged lamellar. But, the spear was the start of a good run of luck. Traded that and his iron helm for better tools. Found a quest treasure and with that and the Njerp loot, bartered for Master woodsman, hand, and splitting axes, a 'Perfect' shovel, a Fine Fishing rod, a pot, a Fine Carving ax, Master Longbow, nets, a dog, all the things I'd drooled over before.

On the way back from hiring my first companion, I found I'd finally trapped a reindeer. Huzzah!

So, I'm still working that small lake's fence, not even 1/4 completed yet. Just started the Advanced missions line. I used my rewards to improve Cooking, Carpentry, and Hideworking. ALL I have to do is avoid stupid decisions now...fingers crossed!

lol... The guy attacked a njerk, with his spear in hand, and got ripped to shreds by the other guy's knife. I was so disappointed!
