Gameplay questions / Re: Healing others?

Aye, you WARNED me. In the next fight, he shot my bull, too. I confess, I hired him with evil intentions. I hoped he'd be killed and I'd recover all the fine furs and silver I'd had to trade for that armor. Alas, he never got close to the fights, he just kept his distance and shot arrows at his teammates. I honestly did take your warnings to heart. I just let my greed overrule good sense...heh.

Gameplay questions / Re: Ritual "Rod fisherman's sacrifice"

I was assuming that it is the one day that terrain changes from snow-covered to greenery. Which means I'll have to wait until next year to use either of those similar spells.

I found an old man who had apparently fallen into a previously frozen well? I picked up his belongings but could not move his corpse. Anyway, all the items were labeled 'Taken', which I had not seen before, unlike the usual 'Unpaid'. I traded for everything because I wasn't sure what 'Taken' implied. I had not actually moved far from his corpse so I guess I avoided the OP's predicament.

The Forest Spirit did show up. Another benevolent type. I followed him as he wandered around my settlement's fence!

heh- I traded for a Fine hauberk. Can't help but think the guy stuck it to me. Anyway, I asked him to go on a long journey with me. Ran into a Njerp and my Companion shot me in the back and then shot my dog! Brand new armor and he damaged it! I am SERIOUSLY thinking about taking him for a long swim...

I've often gotten the message that says I'm at "unity' with the forest. It would be helpful to know what that means and what I've done to have achieved that status. And, my Water Spirit looked peaceful and carried a bream. So, they don't hate me and the fishing will be good? (which it isn't...lol)

The sacrifice ritual is one of those you start with. You usually sacrifice food with it, so you probably know it well, just not that that's the one referenced.

Check the description of the water spirit ritual carefully. It might say base rock, in which case it has to be one described as base rock when you look at it. If it doesn't say anything, it should be OK with any single tile rock (and UrW uses rectangles, not hexes ;) ).

The water spirit requires that you get the timing right, and I haven't gotten that ritual to work consistently. Also make sure any dogs (and other livestock) are kept sufficiently far away, as you're supposed to be alone.

The water spirit ritual can be performed without a quest once you've learned it, and I assume the forest spirit one can be as well, although I haven't tried. I don't know if these quests can be received again if they lapse, but you should be able to perform the rituals regardless.

Very good news, Palu! The Water Spirit is done. I neglected to GO NAKED...heh. I'll try the Forest Spirit soon. Unfortunate that I may have missed out on a new spell from that one....

I thought that robbers had a distinctive look. They don't look like, say, vagabonds or traders.

I have not gotten as far as a Robber quest. I've been trying to get the Forest Spirit to appear. I do the spell, drop a silver bracelet on an ant hill and stand there all night, to no avail. Bah...

Have you ever run from a robber encounter, gone into a village, and had the robbers follow and attack inside the village? I thought that was interesting. One more thing to increase my game anxiety.

PS: Ok, Upon waking in the morning, I got a message that said 'You have Unity with the forest'. Surely, tonite the forest spirits will come! Anyway, I'll try again.
you have to sacrifice the silver, using the sacrificing ritual.  Not just drop it.

I confess I have no idea what that is. I'll go check my list of spells, see what I've overlooked. And, I'll have to get the quest again. It lapsed. EDIT: I checked spells again. I have to assume you mean the spell for calling the spirit? Yeah, I do that, I get the part that says to use the various game procedures, ie: dropping or pushing the item. I have done it both ways, in conjunction with the spell, and spent entire nights standing on the ant hill. The silver item is always there in the morning and no spirits showed themselves.

And, the Water Spirit? Is there some specific type of rock? I used the one hex stones in the rapids and have had no success yet.

Suggestions / Re: Wild boars can be very aggressive

I hunted down a wild sow. Was beginning to butcher it when another showed up and went kamikaze! Maybe it's supposed to be a boar but it was named a wild sow. Anyway, it was plenty belligerent.

Gameplay questions / Re: How to protect against ninja wolves?

You might query the pros here about whether the number of animals you are keeping increases the likelihood of attracting predators. I've been keeping 2 dogs and 1 small bull for a while now and have yet to run across anything like what you did. It may be that the sheer number you're using is a contributing factor.

That's a nasty disaster, frustrating, too.

But here's what I've seen that might explain why it happened that way. On a wounded hunter search I found wolf tracks, followed them and ran into a WOUNDED wolf. I went forward at him and he disappeared into some woods. The next thing I see is battle sounds behind me where my dogs were tethered. The wolf had gone behind me! One dead dog later I finally finished him off.

Another time, I encountered a Njerp. I went stealth and followed his tracks in thick woods. The next thing I hear is a death rattle behind me. He'd circled a woody area and was coming behind me for an ambush. Luckily, my Companion was a bit slow and lagged behind. HE encountered and killed the Njerp before he could do me in. At the time, I thought it was pretty cool that the AI would do this.

I guess your best chance in your situation would be a broadhead arrow at his legs, hoping for a cripple damage result. Sorry about your stunning result.

Jeb- My cabin is completely surrounded with fences and traps. Companions waltz right through it all, all the time. I doubt I could build a wall fast enough to wall him in before he randomly left the building. They don't stand still very long....well, maybe a cripple would not move. heh

Anyway, I don't think that's a good option- too gamey for me.

Dogs are easy to take care of, as you can leash them and tie them to trees. I don't think you can do that with companions, though...

lol...

If you say so, Palu. I keep my dogs fed regularly, morning and at night. I feed them until they refuse any more food. Yet, I won't let them near a squirrel or a small animal in a trap. Perhaps it's just assumption on my part, but, I thought I'd seen them attack some of my catches and, when the skin was harsh, I blamed the dogs...heh.

Btw, I beat the hell out of a wild sow that attacked ME. It would not die! lol..Harsh skin, of course.

Sami- Aye, the building discrepancy was cleared up for me. I'd suggest to new players that, in building a wall, one should face the character directly where they intend to build the wall and take one step backwards. That is, in order to build an east wall, move north, bump into the north corner and take a step backwards.  That should avoid the optical illusion that led me to my error.

As to the arrow bug, I've wondered if it had to do with me playing for 18 hours without restarting my comp? I can't duplicate it, so, I guess I just messed up. Sorry!
