I have to ask if there were/are really snakes in Finland that galivant through the snowy fields? I'm presently in the 3 day of the 5 week before midwinter point and there's a snake roaming near my cabin, despite the ankle-deep snow on the ground.

Bug reports / Duplicating dried meat

I've been trading my excess meat at villages. My usual routine is to load 300 cuts on my small cow. Many times now I've carried 300 over to the cow, dropped it and pushed the 300 cuts onto the cow. Once done, it has divided the 300 into two stacks on the cow, roughly 245 and 55. No problem, so far.

However, I've found, several times, that when the cow is holding almost her max number of different items my cow receives the larger stack but not the smaller stack, and that the original stack of 300 is still whole.

Suggestions / Rendezvous for Foreign Traders

I think it would be great if there were an annual rendezvous of foreign traders somewhere so the PC is not limited to only randomly occurring encounters. French traders did something similar when trading for buffalo and beaver furs in the US. One might even be able to order something for the next rendezvous from the traders. I've never really accepted that there are groups of traders wandering the forests of Finland without an established circuit through the villages.

I have a pen (5x5) with my cattle and dogs within. A lynx saunters up while I'm finishing off a superior hide and the dogs start making warning barks. I can't stop now, right? How many superior hides do I get, right? Not enough!

So, I ignore the warnings because, surely, with 3 dogs inside, no lynx is going to try anything, right?

WRONG! I'm alerted that I hear some stumbling. You know it's coming. I finally finish the 7-hour task and, yep, a lynx has killed a cow and my 3 dogs have not a scratch on them. Well done, doggies!

So, I skin my cow and at least get that back. Next day, I buy a small cow for 150 Tasty cuts of elk. Really? That's all they cost? I return to my settlement and, Lo!, the lynx returns. I keep all my animals inside the cabin. I have shutters on every wall and can see the cocky lynx walking around my cabin, looking for another easy kill. I wonder, "Can I shoot arrows through shutters?".

Oh, yeah! I put two broadheads into the cat, crippling it, and go out and finish it with a spear. Just a crappy harsh hide, but, I don't care. Just glad that problem is dealt with.

It would be interesting if bears/wolves raided/destroyed smaller traps to get at the bait in them. Just a thought.

When I bait a trap with, say, meat, a turnip, and some berries, does it matter which is first/last? That is, does the prey see ALL the various baits, or does the last one placed obscure any others? I've always wondered about that.

Is there a medicinal use for roots from plants like bearpipes, dogpipes, etc? Thus far, I've just used them as vegetables in my cooking.

Re: Dried/smoked meats- I've found that the program often combines like types of prepared meats (ie: tasty smoked elk) even when the batches were prepared at different dates. I'm assuming that these combined stacks will go bad as a whole, rather than staggered as they were in their creation. Yes? Does the game consolidate ALL like types, always? When it does so, does it set the 'use by' date according to the first batch made or the last batch combined?

When I catch the flu, does it exacerbate the condition if I spend a lot of time out in the snow or rain?

I ran across a wounded adventurer in a village recently who did NOT have a quest/mission to recover an heirloom, he's just a wounded man. Can players reach a point where the missions no longer occur?

Why aren't berries considered bait for bear traps?

When possible, I've incorporated trees in my fences. I do so under the expectation that, since I cannot traverse through trees, wild animals/intruders are unable to pass through them. Is this logic sound?

General Discussion / Man, I hate wolves!

I'm traveling with almost my entire year's haul of furs, mostly winter, almost all Fine condition. I'm looking for a foreign trader, to fulfill the quest. I run into wolves, far from home. So, I immediately turn around and run! I successfully evaded them, although I did hear one of my bulls bellowing as we ran. Thus, I continued on in my travels. Not until I was settling in for the evening did I notice that my Companion AND one of my bulls was missing! 

I was traveling with two bulls, a cow, 3 dogs, and a Companion. The bull carrying ALL the furs was missing. Elk, bear, reindeer, wolf, fox, all gone and there was no way for me to retrace my steps. This is crushing...

Before the last patch, I had a character with a spell that called for bear's teeth. I've never had teeth to result from a bear kill. Does that still exist in the game and, if so, how does one acquire bear's teeth?

I had begun to have concerns about my various trap placements and my two trap fences.  I've been checking every day or so and my results were pretty poor for a long time (6-8 weeks?) and only a couple of bears and two elk.

Then, voila!, it's a reindeer, an elk, an elk, an elk and a fox, and another elk. There may be another elk in there that I lost track of. Mixed in with these were at least 6 birds and it's all within a 2-3 week period. Every time I'd complete a hide and finish drying the meat, I'd find another big game in a trap. I got so frazzled that, on the last elk, I was too exhausted to skin it at the trap so I packed the whole thing on my bull and carried the carcass home and stuffed it in the cellar. Unfortunately, that upset my usual routine and the first thing I did in the morning was to BUTCHER it! Bah! I lost the skin!

Not to mention that I had over 50 cords when this period began, which had seemed more than enough up to that point.  I quickly burned through all of those and eventually, after exhausting all my Njerp scrap clothing, I had to use a 24 lb elk hide for cords, of which there are only about 6 lbs left. 

Finally, I've had a day when there WAS NOT something in my traps, lol, so I can take a breather. I may have used up my good luck when I lost that last elk skin. Meh.
 
Addendum: I spoke too soon. I'm wearily making some cords to replenish my stock when I hear a "bawl of pain in the southeast". Yup, another elk...lol. I now have 152 reindeer cuts and 1758 elk cuts being prepared! At least I didn't forget to skin the bugger this time.

Addendum: Remarkably, yet another elk, though it seems this run of luck is finally ended. Oh, and I apologize for not putting this in the Game Discussion area. My error!

I guess I'm hoping someone has the perfect method of tanning hides. I'm at 82% in hide-working and every time I clean a Superior skin I cross my fingers. I've actually given up trying to tan them, resorting to curing them until I can improve my craft.

So, my first question is, how do you set your guy up to work skins? I get a fire going in the fireplace and strip off armor, weapons, etc, to lower my burden, and try to never work unless fresh and vigorous. That's my rule for simply CLEANING a superior hide!  Someone said that it doesn't matter whether you're tired or not, just the amount of burden you're bearing. Can that be confirmed? Is there a best way?

Questions on mechanics- Why will my guy reach out to an adjacent square for a tool but not for a water bag or tub? Hefting a 21lb bag of water adds to burden!
                                      If I pass out while felling a tree, it's partially felled. Is the same true if I fall out while working a hide?
                                      Does putting my uncleaned hides in a cellar slow their deterioration? I do this when I'm already weary, etc, to avoid ruining the hide. But, is that actually
                                      built into the game? Likewise with the meat from kills. Is waiting in a cellar to dry/smoke them a viable plan? How long will it keep meat fresh, if so?
                                      Are any of the four steps immune to degrading a hide as you work it? I mean, is there a step in which I can't possibly screw it up, like soaking a skin to
                                      cure it?

For the record, I had a superior cured bird skin that I tried to proceed with, as a test. The very next step degraded that one, at 82%. I'm not ready yet!

Gameplay questions / Can't make skis with reindeer leather?

Winter's coming and I thought I had prepared myself with leather for skis but it tells me that Forest Reindeer leather does not count as animal hide for that purpose. Is this supposed to be the case? Which also brings to mind the question- Why does no NPC ever have leather for trading? People in villages have leather items but no one ever seems to make leather.

One week before midwinter, 4th year. I have the habit of removing most of my clothes in the cabin in order to work hides. I know I picked them up but I guess I neglected to WEAR them when I went out. I didn't notice that I was freezing? Yep. I got the notice that my neck suffered frostbite...and I died! I'm sure I died as the richest man in the wilderness...bah!

Sami- I reported some time back that while trying to make regular arrows the game kept defaulting to making blunt arrows. It has popped up again, so, I immediately saved game so you could see if you could duplicate it. My character is positioned where I was working, so, you should be able to go straight to the weapon-making process and see if it happens for you.

Addendum: While it says it will use a rock, it actually just makes a regular arrow, so, I'm wrong. Sorry!
