Haha, I did not even think of how it might come across. Nice to see the different perspectives. In my area, shops where you bring your own containers are an emerging trend in recent years.

Bug reports / [3.62] Container content ownership does not change in trade
« on: January 16, 2021, 09:58:17 PM »
Hi,

I just wanted to let you know that the game struggles to keep track of owership for the contents of containers.

Example 1: I wanted to buy a small amount of hemp seeds, so I filled them into a wooden bowl (both the seeds and the bowl belonged to the village). After finishing the trade, the bowl still had the [unpaid] tag and the villagers didn't allow me to leave.

Example 2: Filling village foods into containers owned by me usually works, but can fail as well. In this example, I forgot to pay - afterwards completing the trade also didn't remove the [unpaid] tag any more.

I can understand that it's difficult for the game to keep track of this, but I still wanted to report it. Maybe it's easier to fix than I think :P.

I also support JP_Finn's idea of reduced ice on the village water supplies, as in theory they are used on a daily basis by the villagers, there should not be a whole winter's worth of ice cover on them :P

Aha! Thank you for looking into it and teaching us something about the ice mechanics along the way  :)

Bug reports / Bird stuck flying high next to a trap
« on: March 27, 2020, 07:23:17 AM »
Funny thing that happened: I was tanning some leather when a willow grouse enters the light lever trap protecting my berry stash. In the time it takes me to finish tanning, two other birds show up. One is gone when I finally reach the trap, one is in the trap and one is stuck flying high in the map square next to the trap with a wound to its face. It's a black grouse.  Maybe it got attached by bird #3? Anyway even as I get right next to it, it does not fly away. I try to attack it with my wielded weapon, but it really is flying. Then I throw a javelin and get it at the first attempt.

So I can't tell what happened here and if it's intended this way, but I found it noteworthy enough to make a post and share.

In Version 3.62, I went fishing on a freshly frozen lake. I could not walk there on the wilderness map, but was allowed to crawl. The ice was not so thick, it took 6 minutes to make a hole with a javelin. It also made a cracking sound when I got up and walked on the ice.
So what happened was that at some point, i dropped a pike on the ice. The game made a splashing sound and rendered a water hole graphic below my character. The strange thing was that I was still standing. I only fell into the water (same tile) when I tried to walk away. On a second occasion, the same thing  happened when I dropped some branches on the ice. That time, I did not walk away. Instead, I went prone again and in that case the game allowed me to get to the next tile without getting wet and cold at all.
I am not entirely sure why the ice can support a 80kg person standing on it while breaking when I drop some weight I was carrying all along, but maybe this is intended. But once the ice breaks, the player character's status needs to be updated before the next turn. This should be straightforward to reproduce, but I can happily provide a savegame if needed. 8) Cheers!

Boards are still an important source of income for new players. If they use fallen tree trunks (found in every forest tile), they save a lot of time.
If you have a metal axe (not stone axe):
- find a fallen tree trunk
- make boards
- sell as many as you can
- make paw-board traps
- sell as many as you can

It really helps new players, yet it's much more balanced than before. I am guilty of this myself, I remember one character who wanted to buy every single item in a rich Driik village and who took down enough trees to have his name cursed by the spirits forever...
All in all I think board value should be reduced to 2 cuts instead of 8, it would make much more sense. At the moment, you turn one board worth 8 cuts into a paddle worth 4 cuts, but this is just my personal taste.

Guides and tutorials / Item value calculator
« on: March 21, 2020, 11:05:04 AM »
Here is the link to a spreadsheet that contains price values for all items in the game including modifiers plus a calculator where you enter the exact item name with modifiers and get the value without needing to search through the sheets. This is such a useful tool, helping you calculate how much you need to craft to trade for some item. Also it is full of information to anything that may influence item prices. 10/10 source, i love it.

I found it a long time ago (apparently it's from version 3.40) and then playing on a different computer I couldn't find the forum post any more, so here it is again for everybody.

Okay, update time: with ten light lever traps in two separate locations I got enough birds for a leather rope within a week. I was quite surprised how easy it was, given that my trapping skill was completely negated by my injuries.

About berries: in my experience the cloudberry is the only one that can keep my characters fed, but I am mostly playing small people so that may make a difference. Surely that extra bird meat is making survival much easier I must say.

10
That is some great advice, I will try that. A little food diversity is surely welcome among all those cloudberries. Thanks for sharing.

On the escape: It was so lucky. Took four arrows and fell, but somehow no one came after me and I got away.

Gameplay questions / Winter time: where to get rope for a stone axe?
« on: March 20, 2020, 05:15:06 PM »
Hello there,
I haven't played in a while, but now I have delved back into the game starting a new runaway slave in winter in version 3.62. To my horror I found I could not craft a stone axe because I lacked rope and cord was no more accepted. I also could not craft a leather rope from my fur clothing. A withe did not work either. As it is winter, I can't get by hands on birch-bark strips. Is trading my only option to get an axe before spring?

Not bugs / Re: Wild animals suiciding on melting ice?

So I want to thank everybody for sharing their stories  :) I also loved Sami's post with real life references  :) very nice, I had no idea this happens today. I must admit though that where I live we only have frozen lakes every 5-10 years so I never thought about it more...

I have come to the conclusion that my scenario was (unintentionally) more likely to result in drowned animals, because with the hurt helpless and afraid start in spring time I spent nearly all my time in the first 5 (?) weeks at the shore or in the middle of frozen lakes trying to catch some fish with a rock or a crude javelin. If I understand the game correctly, only parts of the map where you already zoomed in are simulated in detail (at least the save games get much bigger when I have visited more places) so the fact that I was there all the time may be the most important factor.

Can anybody offer some insight if this assumption is correct? After all I feel less cheesy now for profiting from these poor animals with so little effort  ;D

I guess what I mean is exactly this: should it be fairly common or should it be adjusted a little bit? So that it will still happen, for reasons like the ones mentioned by Tom H or when you manage to scare the animal to go on the ice, but more rarely if you don't do anything like in my case?

So I was fishing by a lake when I suddenly saw a dead lynx across the water.

As you can see in the image attached it is spring and the ice is very thin now (it takes 6 minutes to break with a javelin at the edge, I guess it's thinner in the middle where the lynx died). I was in the area for a few days and had seen the lynx a few times, but I had not hunted it in any way.

I wonder if animals should be avoiding the ice at this point when roaming about. That is why I'm reporting it in the bug section.

This is the second time I profit from this behaviour, earlier I was able to hunt a bull elk on a lake. When it ran away, it broke in as well, an easy kill.
