Maybe it was damaged during the initial battle, if you got hit in the head a few times?  Or during the battle to recapture it, if the robber was wearing it and you or your mates smashed his head in?

Actually I was thinking the same at first, but in fact, this is not the first time I met this problem, so I was thinking perhaps otherwise. But yes, it could be the case. Let me check the message log detailly and do some testing...

And it seems that what the robbers carried in his inventory kept its original durability but what the robber put on would experience this strange durability loss. This remains to be verified.

So, I had a blacksmith crafted me a wonderful masterwok iron spectacle helm and was wearing this brand new helm. The other day, I ran into a bunch of robbers and with the confidence from the helm, I fought back. However, they still took me down and took everything from me including that helm. Luckily, some villages were not far from where I was ambushed, so I decide to ask for some help. Shortly later, I brought two helpers back and killed those robbers. I was happy to retrieve my gears, especially that nice new helm of mine, but when I took a look at the helm, I found the helm basically ruined. (A picture of that is attached below)

It lost about 60% of durability, though the robber had it for just a couple of hours. How could he ruined it this badly. The helm had experienced only two battles. I didn't remember iron helms are so easily to be damaged.

My hypothesis is that the durability of the helm didn't inhert its original value. It was regenerated as other armor type loot. I don't know if this is supposed to be a bug or design. but it feels a bit strange.

Guides and tutorials / Re: Advice for Killing Bands of Foreign Traders
« on: April 15, 2025, 04:48:13 AM »
There's another trick I discovered. Like trading their arrows away you talked about, actually some foreign traders even sell all their equipments, which means you can just buy all his weapons in advance, then all they can do is to fight you with fists. They are basically zero threat in this way.

Also asking their names before the fight helps. Otherwise the message log will be spamming "Foreign trader did what...", but you don't know who is who, which is negative for you to evaluate and judge the situation.

And to start the fight. It's a good idea to stand at the back of them first and attack him from behind. Since one can't counter attacks from out of his sight, if lucky, you can just take down one immediately, thus make one fewer enemy at the beginning of the fight. (you can also try assassinate one during his sleep)

If the foreign traders are roaming aside watercourse, then you know you can shoot them down from a punt, they will easily exhaust themselves in the water and become very likely to faint and drown themselves. (But you may want to hold a shield and keep your distance from the bank until their arrows run out first. Their shots are pretty accurate)

Don't tell me you've seriously never played the game using this course before. I would have thought anyone new to game would start with that course to learn how things work in the game..
There is? Really? I didn't remember. I must have overlooked it... I can't believe I never noticed that and was just using [p] all the time for hundreds of hours. Anyways, lesson learnt. I think I totally need to look into the in-game tutorials again. Thank you for reminding me of that.

Push, or Pull(get from adjacent tile) are slower than Move (or haul), especially single trunk/log hauling is pretty quick. Remember to keep encumbrance low to avoid excessive fatigue buildup

Yeah, it feels faster to move a single log. It seems to take just one turn, but when it comes to two logs, it takes minutes and causes more fatigue.

The key you pressed is [m] for move

I remember the days bofore m was introduced, p used to be the only way. It's much easier with m now.

Yes, it is! Many thanks! This is really useful. How could I not know about it before and was pushing all the stuff using [p] all the time...

So, I was building my cabin. This is a very laborious task for both your character and yourself, mainly because you have to haul many logs to the needed location and, for every tile you move, you have to press "P" for pushing, select all logs on ground, press "Enter" and move a tile. After hitting such a complicated bunch of keys, congratulations, you moved a tile, now you just need to do it over and over again, so I always think if only there's a way to automize this work.

Then suddenly, It seemed I accidentally activated such a function. All I did was just continually moving my character and somehow all the logs on ground was automatically being pushed along the way. No need to press any additional keys. But I didn't remember how I triggered it. Actually I was not even sure if it's an implemented function, Perhaps the programm worked in an unintended way?

So I wonder if anyone know anything about it or have similar encounters. Thanks in advance.

Gameplay questions / Re: Questions about hafting
« on: April 13, 2025, 02:26:21 AM »
That's true for stuff like boards or meat (they only want as much as they can eat), or wooden bowls, but I think for something as valuable as an axe you could probably always manage to sell it.

It'd still be difficult because there's not an infinite amount of axes, but I think it'd be an interesting experiment

Indeed. It's challenging. You need to know all the blacksmiths in the region and it requires a huge trading network in order to feed yourself purely on that, since the profit is sad.

1) carpentry, and as the process doesn’t prompt about fatigue etc, I’d say “no”

2) carpentry

3) I’ve not noticed a difference, but I’d assume using a metal tool would be better than a rock.

4) I think it’s pretty standard variation like all skill, below 40 you’ll get bunch of crude/harsh products. After 80, you’ll start getting perfect/master craft items. (As long as you use tool and materials in fine/perfect quality)
Ah, now I see better. Thanks a lot. So, carpentry is now a more important skill.

It also seems possible to make a living on it. You can buy some decent axes, de-haft and re-haft with better hafts. In the end, you might get the axes back with better quality, then sell them and thus make a profit.

Living without hunting could be interesting enough to worth a try. I think I'll roll a carpenter character to see if so.

Gameplay questions / Questions about hafting
« on: April 11, 2025, 05:16:22 AM »
I tried hafting with a decent spear head and a decent spear haft yesterday. But upon many attempts, I still can only get a rough spear, so some questions aroused to me:

1. Which skill (like carpentry or common skill) affects the quality of a made haft? Does fatigue affects it?
2. Which skill affects the quality of the hafting process?
3. Does the kind of hammering tools used during hafting (club, firewood or stone) have anything to do with the quality of a hafted product? Does fatigue affects it?
4. How much randomness is in the quality of hafting? Can you get the quality you want after you tried re-hafting for enough times?

Thank you very much.

General Discussion / Re: Getting food long term
« on: April 09, 2025, 05:05:28 AM »
Dried meat is the ultimate solution. you can stock tons of dried meat in your celler. It preserves for more than a year long there, so you just need to do some lagre scale hunting and there'll be no worry about food.

If you start in a season when you can't make dried meat, you can still find a carbin in a village and make smoked meat there. The villagers will keep the fireplace on every day, so the process of smoking meat will keep going without your watch, which means you can meanwhile hunt for more meat and trade the furs for other equipments to start your own life.

So, make some javelins and try your luck in the wilderness.

I wonder if this means stealing would become harder, since NPCs now have light sources in their villages.

Suggestions / Re: New Hotkeys/Controls PLEASE! Grid?
« on: September 09, 2024, 06:22:44 PM »
Actually, I would expect macros more. If those frequently used tasks can be binded to one key or one key combination, the gameplay will be much much smoother, because you don't have to press multiple keys to just search a simple function like crafting an arrow, chopping down a tree, or hauling stuff on ground around. With more and more functions introduced into the game, and more kinds of items accessible in player inventory, solutions such as macros to simplify controls are never this needed anytime in the past.
