Mod Releases / Re: Njerpez Cookery Mod v1.01
« on: October 17, 2019, 02:23:41 AM »
Hemp seeds are a great choice since they're common, but I believe nutrition-wise, clayweed seeds beat them.
Turnip seeds are poor and kinda not worth cooking unless you just had some around and don't mind throwing them in.

It's too bad all the pics have vanished from the mod guide, I will try to get some time to fix it and update the mod (it should still work in the latest 2019 version, but might need small convenience changes for cooking pot size etc).

Yep there's a patchwise tag but it was bugged for cookery at the time. Not sure if fixed now or not.

Been 3+ years here, and still no one wants to go hunting with me "until we see Tauno who went with you".   I brought Tauno's lifeless body to the village back when he met his end, so everyone definitely saw him...  Perhaps it's Driik sarcasm in action.

I'm also seeing only does/sows in my games. Can't be RNG.

Bug reports / Bugged cooking names
« on: January 07, 2019, 06:41:21 PM »
Using a liquid beverage (heather, nettle etc.) as seasoning in a cooking recipe by hitting TAB and going to "container" upon selection causes the cooking recipe to be assigned the wrong name.

For example, an expected mixed mushroom soup will become "a mixed. "

A pea soup becomes "a pot of pea".

This can be reproduced everytime and only happens when using a beverage as seasoning.

Gameplay questions / Re: Can i buy healing herbs and seeds somewhere?
« on: December 19, 2018, 04:17:15 AM »
Seeds and herbs are considered unworthy items in trade ("huh, seeds - that is not needed'), or valued very low. But on the other hand, in Driik and Kiesse land you can get hemp seeds almost for the price of the birchbark box they come in. The easiest way to eat hemp seeds without a cookery mod is by boiling them in a pot, small amount at a time.  They can be ground into hemp-flour too if you have patience.

Never seen healing herbs for trade anywhere, but on certain quests people will give you their personal healing potion concoctions that can be used in place of healing herbs for wounds.

Here's the dried berries from my NjerpCookery mod:

Code: [Select]
.Dried berries.  (4)   *COOKERY* /10/ \6d\  %30% :151:
{Berries}   #8#     [remove] [roast] [name:dried %s] [optional]
{Board} '+to lay out the berries in the sun'

You can paste into your cookery_glossary.txt to try it out. The berries in the first entry are marked [optional] which I feel makes it a lot more versatile in gameplay because it's not often that you have the full 8lbs of berries the recipe calls for, but making smaller batches was annoying me when I did have larger amounts of berries amasssed, because of how many keypresses it was. This way seems to be a nice compromise that no longer feels annoying, to me.

Note that you can make dried berries outta literally nothing with this recipe because of how [optional] works, it will take any amount including 0 berries. But if you do that, you quickly find out the joke will be on you, since dried berries made of thin air will have 0 nutrition value  ;D

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: Bake 1 lb of flour give 0.7 lb bread
« on: December 02, 2018, 08:02:21 PM »
Yes, that must be the reduction being applied.

Keep in mind that all of the actual nutrition of the flour is preserved. It just becomes lighter.

If you still need it to be equal weight, the tag you need is [COOK_WEIGHT_DIV:2],  where 2 is the number to divide by. So I would try what happens if you use 0.65 for example.

Btw, at the moment if you use the [BOIL] or [BAKE]  tag instead of [ROAST],  it will not apply any auto reductions.

Get well soon man!

Do try my Bear Strong drink, it is good for wounds and as a herbal beverage.

General Discussion / Re: weight of dried fish vs dried meat

Woah, that definitely sounds like a fixable thing, hope Sami notices your post. Lucky it doesn't overflow to 0 so our bear meats become like the mushrooms of old, when they were bugged.

I  know there's another way to lose out on nutrition related to containers and flour, where if you grind flour in chunks of 4lbs and your bag is nearly full, it'll fill up the bag but the overflow flour will be lost. Disappointing to think about that precious flour being gone by accident. So I try to only fill bags up partial, and then use "A" to pour from one partial bag to another, since this is always loss-less.

Suggestions / Save companions from accidental death in body piles
« on: November 14, 2018, 06:24:55 PM »
If you fight robbers and your felled questing companion is unconscious when an unconscious enemy falls on top of him, trying to finish off the enemy with an eager spear strike got my friend in the same tile killed instead.

A definite "Tuomo, nooooooooo.."  moment because I thought the game would understand that we're not trying to kill Tuomo. It'd be nice if there was a check for this situation, and the spear strike went at the intended (enemy) target first, and only killed Tuomo if I persisted striking the spot when the enemy is already dead.

And what's with the Driik women never baking any bread? These females getting out of control.

Gameplay questions / Re: Defense of Cattle?

Oh yeah, it's a rare occurence but the wolves and lynxes will kill cows if they're hungry. This happens especially in spring. You can reduce this by building traps around the cow pens, so that hopefully the predators will be distracted and get caught in the trap. That's not a 100% solution but sometimes it works. I also leash some dogs so that they are in range of the cows, if a predator shows up the dogs will aggro on them and hopefully scare them away.

The thing about URW cookery is that nutrition is never lost. Drying or smoking any food item reduces its weight, but it keeps the exact same nutritiousness total (and there's a small extra bonus added, especially if you can get it to tasty or delicious status). That's why you see that with salmon vs bear, but rest assured it's not just random and every original calorie is still in there, nothing is ever lost by smoking or drying food. Just the weight changed.

General Discussion / Re: 6 for 6 Bear trapping
« on: November 12, 2018, 05:55:47 PM »
That's a very effective "in range" strategy for trapping, if you have the foresight to bring everything needed. You can catch elk and reindeer the same way if you bring a couple turnips for bait.  The bear trap or trap-pit will catch those big elks for you too.  Berries if you're catching birds.

I caught some runaway foxes this way with no trap at all, by setting up a piece of meat when I thought I was in range of the hiding fox, and then hiding myself a good distance away with a loaded crossbow. With some luck and patience (passing time with the "." key held down till you see movement)  the foxes do come to sniff the meat after they calm down from the chase you gave them before, so you can get that perfect straight line shot.

Btw if you ever wondered like me, what happens to animals when you leave the area - I can confirm that they don't just despawn. I went seal hunting recently near the sea area and been peppering this one poor seal with arrows over 4 days in roughly the same neighbourhood where I first found him. I felt like giving up several times, thinking for sure he just despawned and it's fruitless. After many days, it was a triumph to finally down him with a lucky shot - I got a seal that had 8 different arrows in him, so for sure it was the same one!  Each time I'd hit him, he would dive and then I could only rarely find him the same day a secodn time, but I'd go back to camp and sleep, then return when it was bright morningtime again and start looking for him all over again. I was finding that seal on zoomed-in map mode, even though a lot of the time he could not be seen when zoomed out.

So my theory is that animals won't just de-spawn, they may wander off though. But they're still there on the global map, and there's a chance you might find your wounded elk some day still even if they get away on you in the chase the first time.
