Re: Impossible (?) herb gathering quest? I agree!  If the quest-giver needs the herb, he should take the time to teach the player-character what it looks like.  On a somewhat-related note, it would also be nice to be able to ask villagers about nearby plants - "Excuse me, old fellow, but what is that flower growing there?"  "Why, that's a burdock, my son.  We grow it to help with wounds"

Re: Dismissed hirelings not returing properly I've had this happen multiple times as well. I never keep hirelings around until they leave anymore; I always return to their village and dismiss them there once they say they have a day left. Hopefully this gets fixed soon; I'd like to not have to dismiss them early but unfortunately it's the only way to guarantee they won't get lost.

4 robbers while building roads on the homestead field,
laying stones and gravel to make the weeds yield
a group of robbers with handaxes they wield.
battle ensued, bull raging, ram ramming, dogs biting, javelins flying.
and now, only a whisper remains of the robbers for whom there is no crying.

the end result? a wounded cow, a wounded ram, 2 wounded dogs.... and 4 burning robbers.

Surprisingly enough, this is not actually true.  The Baltic Sea, particularly in the Gulf of Finland and the Gulf of Bothnia (i.e., coastal Finland) is much less salty than the rest of the ocean.  There's so much river water flowing into the sea that it dilutes out the seawater substantially.  So you get freshwater fish living happily, and it is in fact drinkable.

Is the limit the same for everything besides PC, or might the punt have an higher limit?

 If I recall correctly, a punt can carry more.
Raft carries more.  Punt is lighter.

Re: what do roads do? Fatigue builds up faster when winter traveling in wooded and mountainous terrain, and I'd expect roads to be at least as good as (frozen) mires. In addition to that, they indicate village relations and show you where nearby villages are if you're exploring the area. Plus, sleeping on them is not recommended. They also have some flora that may be of interest.

Re: Is this an exploit or game mechanic? Rather than it actually being carried, I imagine it as an "active pile" that the character can't step away from.  Kind of like running a stall.

The problem with boards though, is that they don't seem to disappear from npcs inventories or be put down anywhere, especially if the person was hired.

Re: Adding marriage - poll about how you find its priority For me it would really complete the Unreal World experience to have a good reason to keep playing the game after the first winter. I support some sort of family-building or village-starting feature. Something that the game itself can do to add challenge without the player having to come up with his own handicaps and goals to stay entertained.  Once you know how to survive, the game as is only caters to a very small niche who enjoy playing without end-game challenges.

To those saying NPC interactions and relationships to the character will need to be upgraded first. Yes that's important, but "improving the AI" will be a stepping stone to Marriage anyway. It can be done along the way.
