Re: Trip to Finland Hi guys,

Sorry for late reply but now a lot is going in my life, a lot of mini projects like building sauna(yeah! ;D). Thank you all for answers, like I said before every information, every link is priceless. The idea of the trip is still alive, I almost gathered money for pneumatic kayak so progress is better than I could imagine. Detailed plan for the trip will arise later but for now I think that Lapland and Hossa would be too much so I'm dropping it down on the list. Probably we will end in southern/central parts of Finland. Erkka, Ametsala, we will try to vist you guys in that time, for now it's too soon for such detailed plan.

The_Hobo: The Olympic Peninsula looks great and i'ts close to Vancouver(always want to visit this city), pacific ocean and of course Roslyn where they film my beloved "Northern Exposure" - I envy you! :D
But sadly droughts all around the world are very disturbing :( Here in Poland we also have huge problems with that. Even in Sweden there were big forest fires in this summer. Shocking. I also don't remember the 'real' winter in our area with tons of snow and freezing cold, ech :(

Take care and play Urw!
Simon

Re: Guinness world record for "First open-world survival videogame" Just two world records? Man, are you guys even trying? But anyway, huge respect and congratulations.

(also, it seems me and Erkka have the same taste for T-shirts. Gotta love that shrapnel damage style)

A thank you and an apology to Sami and Erkka Hello, everyone! I think now is as good a time as any to present myself and send a message that I've been meaning to send for a while.

I've know this game for almost a decade, from about the time I learned about Dwarf Fortress and roguelikes as a genre. Unfortunately, at the time the game was not free (was it 3.14? Almost sure it was) and I was limited to the demo. Since I didn't really have a way to pay for it and it was kinda expensive, I couldn't really explore the game's depth.

I have a vague recollection of being on IRC, probably on a roguelike or even the URW channel and essentially bitching about the fact that this business model prevented me from actually exploring the game outside the narrow scope of the demo, which would probably make me less likely to actually shell out the money.

In the midst of this I made some silly arguments, including saying that the game was barely updated and there were quite a few features missing. Which there were, but the game was still being updated. I suggested that making it free would make it open to much more people and might even generate more revenue for the devs. It does seem that the game has become more well known and got some more activity in the community, but I can't speak for the revenue.

That being said, and considering the game went free on version 3.15, I owe Sami and Erkka a formal apology and a thanks. I was a jerk, if only because of the way I expressed my discontent at that time. You clearly deserve recognition for all the work you have put into this simulation, and it keeps getting better.

Unfortunately life keeps kicking me in the balls and I'm not in a position to even donate €10 right now, but you have been added to my permanent mental note (alongside Dwarf Fortress) reminding me to properly reward you for all the fun and wasted hours on something you created and developed over so long.

Thank you for all the work you put into this, and keep at it. You're great!

Edit: I've gotten the itch to play again after a while (and a lot changed since 3.23!) after I suggested URW to a co-worker who's into roguelikes/survival games. They were impressed, of course :) it's quite the gaming gem you have here!

Re: Could whistling arrows prove a good addition to ranged hunting ?
I don't have reference books at hand, but based on my memory: a whistling arrow works with aquatic birds, when the flock is flying above a body of water. The arrow is shot so that it flies above the flock of birds - they hear the whistling sound above them, take it as a sign of danger, and seek cover by diving into the water below them. Then the hunter readies ordinary hunting arrows, waits for the birds to surface one after one, trying to hit them the very moment when they surface - that often is the moment when they don't move for a second, and we all know that hitting a stationary target is far more easier than trying to down a flying bird.

Yes, that's what I meant. It's all about tricking the birds to land temporarily, making them an easier target to hit (even with conventional arrows) than if they were in flight.

Thanks for 3.60 Beta Taking a pause from all the question and suggestion posts I'm making in regards to the 3.60 Beta changes to say:

Thank you.

Danke.

Meegwetch.

Saami and Erkka have continued to keep the game going. It is a lot of fun. Long timers and modders like myself are among the "questions show interest" type of people. I'm on the grindstone to update the large BAC (Brygun and community) mod to better integrate. I'm doing it because I support the game and the community. I didn't want that to be lost in all the questions and suggestions.

Thanks.

Brygun

Re: Limping and animal size tracking information Very interesting, I always thought that tracking is somewhat weak at its current state. Its very useful, but still kinda weak, so more info its gives - the better. You know, it might be worthwhile to consider some kind of auto-follow option for good trackers. Say, a tracker with over 50% would have an option to auto follow tracks till the prey comes in sight. But then again, this might be a bit too much, just a thought.

P.S. Its been a while for me, glad to see you guys are still at it. At least some things are stable in this world and you can depend on those crazy Finns to keep on with the development no matter what ;)

Re: Axes and hatchets Ah, I see.  I think the vesuri, we would probably call a "bill-hook machete".

I work clearing trails in a National Park and have worked in similar forestry-related fields for a long time so I find these types of woodsman tools quite interesting.
