Re: Is trading for food the easy way out?
Ahh yeah not needing bait sounds like the dream!! I'll have to look into it, I've bought a decent rod and hook and some nets, but have yet to make the move to a rapids tile.

My experience fishing amounted to something I named "The Javelin Trap" in which I slowly starved to death while catching just enough fish to keep active fishing, not ideal haha. That was early days and I've since learnt the benefit of trapping so perhaps that would switch things up.

With couple/few nets you should be able to add good amount of fish to your diet. Few hints/suggestions:
If you set a net during “morning”, wait until “late morning” the next day before checking it. BUT not later than “late morning” of the 2nd day.
Sacrificing one of the smaller fish, like a bream, every day when you’re net fishing: you might find yourself looking to smoke or dry some of them, as you can’t eat that much roasted fish! Or maybe trade/donate to nearby villages.

Re: Is trading for food the easy way out? Forgot to answer the main question.

Trading for food in early game is viable option. Crafting or wood cutting are tasks that produce goods (unless rough) for food bartering. Angling for few hours, a day, might yield a pike. Twisting birchbark to a rope, will produce goods to barter for food.

Exactly this mate. Gamble with my fishing skill and equipment, or guarantee a full belly with the strategy of - make javelins->buy yarn->make arrows->buy food.

Definately feels like an easy option that will be much harder if they balance yarn prices (which, for the work involved in textilecraft, they probably should), but it's great while learning the systems.

Seasonal Steam sale and Kekri customs Harvest festival sale is on at Steam and in the Far North we do celbrate Kekri.
So let the new adventurers be respected with the discount, and the ancestral spirits with our special Kekri costumes and customs...

During this festivity period you can grab the game for decent discount on Steam.

It's Kekri, not halloween, in the Far North.

Kekri is an ancient Finnish harvest festival celebrated in the fall when the annual agricultural activities were all accomplished and the harvest collected. Kekri meant the end of the crop year, which was a big turning point. It was the time when the souls and spirits of the dead wandered around and visited the living. The ancestors were respected and welcomed. Sauna was heated up for them, and meal prepared too. The living celebrated accordingly, and so do we.

Kekri Goat

Kekri time included tradition of Kekripukki (Kekri goat) figure. People would dress up as horned creatures, wearing furs or coats upside down, and went around in their disguises and were offered food and drink.
So, what does a decent developer of tradition rich game do to follow the tradition?
Yes. He dresses up as Kekripukki.

We wish you happy and haunting Kekri time, or Halloween - if that suits you better.
Celebrate and participate!

Re: Can I split big fish?
is it possible to chop salmon to couple of pieces for my many dogs?

Privateer made a mod for this a couple of years ago:

https://www.unrealworld.fi/forums/index.php?topic=1796.msg5073#msg5073

The mod sets the "fish cuts" to Pike but if you drop this in it should work fine:
Code: [Select]
.Clean fish. "Salmon" [effort:1] [noquality] [phys:arms,one-armed]  *FISHING*  /30/ %10% |-2| [patch:5]
{Raw fish}      #1#     [remove] [name:%s cut] [patchwise]
{Knife}  '+for chopping and cleaning'
[WEIGHT:1]

Re: Northern spear falls victim to suply chain disruptions?
I have checked 13 villages in Kuikka territory and 19 villages in Owl lands, peeked into every single tent, and there is not a single northern spear for sale. Has it always been this difficult to find them or am I looking in the wrong places? I do not recall them being that rare.

Northern knives are also in very short supply, I believe I have seen 1. Plenty of northern bows, though, including many fine ones, and one masterwork quality. Also, lots of hunters and adventurers are casually walking around with their northern spears dangling behind their back, but they are always of regular quality, so I would rather find a higher quality one for sale.
This happens. When you are after a particular item, it is sometimes hard to find it. The only thing you can do is keep checking and if you somehow managed  to do a first-pass on all relevant villages, then take a pause and do a second pass a year later - you might get lucky then. And until then I would suggest buying the regular quality of the item you seek.

To improve the situation in the future,
1) I personally would like a review of item production and distribution code with a goal of increasing general item availability.
2) As a more substantial change, I back that suggestion I read in suggestions thread a while back prepaying a particular amount to get an item produced/obtained for you by a village craftsman. That would make life slightly easier for the player. Perhaps make it 250% cost but make it possible which reflects real life anyway as many items can be somehow arranged, if one is willing to pay a high price.

Re: Northern spear falls victim to suply chain disruptions? Ok, for science I have scum saved to regenerate the same Kuikka village 15 times. During that experiment alone I have seen 16 northern bows before seeing the first northern spear. Overall, I must have seen about 40 northern bows before seeing the first spear in a shop. Pretty sure the spear spawn rate is set to quite a bit lower than that of the bows, since otherwise such a skewed distribution would be extremely unlikely.

Re: Help please mod not visible in-game  I didn't check the mod for function, However I can help with why it's not showing.

You need to define your submenu since you're making a new 'tag'
[SUBMENU_START:Baitseeking]
Blah Blah
[SUBMENU_END:Baitseeking]

Either open menudef_additional.txt and add a new line:
Code: [Select]
.Baitseeking. -1- *MAKE*
Or Make a new menudef_name.txt file and add the line above.

Or change the tag to an already embedded tag making your mod show in that menu;
Code: [Select]

[SUBMENU_START:fishing]
blah blah
[SUBMENU_END:fishing]
