quality of life For new players:

Since the UI can be a bit unwieldy at times, here's some things I learned:

The combination of using NUMPAD+ and the TAB key is really useful to drop, equip, dress/undress/haul certain items without having to scroll through your stuff.
NUMPAD+ = select everything
SPACE = confirm
TAB = activate filter


TAB+'f' selects all food, so it is very useful to dump all the food into the cellar. TAB+'f', NUMPAD+ and SPACE do a great job here.

If I want to cook those 259 elk cuts, what I do is
press 'd' (to drop)
press NUMPAD+ (to select everything)
press TAB 'f'
press NUMPAD- (to unselect everything)
press SPACE (Now I will drop everything that is not food)
When roasting my cuts I can now use 'r' to repeat, and if I am only carrying raw meat, the process is really fast.

I do the same for tanning stuff, drop everything except hides, press 'g' to get my knife (and some fat) from the pile at my feet, and I am ready to go with 0 penalties

I do the same when trading in a village sometimes, when I drop everything I don't want to sell. I undress all clothing via SHIFT+T, TAB 'a', NUMPAD+, SPACE. Now I can let the villagers choose "which items they actually want", and I can also carry more.


The game takes materials from the ground. When crafting it is useful to first drop everything (NUMPAD+, SPACE), and then pick up some critical materials that cannot be used from the ground (like food or cords).


When cooking (or drying food) it is useful to build the cellar right next to the shelter. This way I can make a fire next to the cellar and cook while standing on the cellar. The food is prepared "inside" the cellar. If the fire is really small, the food won't burn and will be stored in the cellar without the need to move it there.


About drying food: On my first couple of games I didn't know that clothing can be used to make cords. Linen, wool, leather, and fur clothing can be transformed into cords. One cord can take 19 cuts.


Food preservation: Food on companions spoils more slowly. Shift+'g' can be used in the overland map, so whenever I am hungry, I can take some meat from my companion instead of carrying the food myself. (Also useful for trading.)

barry the bull, why you should get at least 1 bull. left my cabin this morning, gathering stones for the paths on my homestead (when finished, i'll Screenshot that to for y'all to see)

anyway, this picture is why you should get a bull, when doing large building projects.

Taking a nap in the middle of the trip. Wake up to strange sound. Saw a pack of wolf trying to eat my big bulls.
Went into berserk mode. Bring out the masterwork longbow and superior broadhead arrow.
Keep shooting at all wolf. Kill the entire wolf pack. Even enough to get the message "The forest seem hostile."
In the end, 1 big bull and 8 wolf was KIA.

Skinning and butchering takes half a day or so, while cleaning the skin and tan the first step takes the rest. The next day the second tanning stage is done with smoking/drying meat taking up the bulk of the time, while the whole third day is spent banging on the skin. Thus, an elk caught in a trap means you will have to reschedule your activities.

And yes, animals and companions can be loaded by pushing stuff onto them. A normal sized dog is capable of carrying 65 cuts of meat, while a big one can take 90 or 95 (I don't remember which). I use my character's dog to carry meat back from a kill.
You can also load a log onto a cow by pushing it, and then unload it by 'G'etting it. A big cow isn't strong enough for a trunk, but a big bull is.

Re: Wall with shutter?, and other questions... The wall with shutter is a display glitch, but it's annoying when you know about it, and confusing when you don't.

The Njerps were likely a coincident. Njerp camps are incredibly rare (not counting the starting scenario when you start in one).

I believe you can take back things carried by NPCs, but not things equipped. NPCs can be hired with food, but may require weapons as well (and, at times, a big stack of weapons...). I suspect other things can be used as well, but I haven't tried.

I believe you can run and anything leashed will move at your speed (I think that's true for an unconscious dog as well).

As mentioned, the PC, NPCs and animals gradually heal if they don't die from the injury (apparently children don't heal yet, according to a bug report). The PC can starve to death but animals don't (dogs can bark in hunger forever, apparently). Trapped animals deteriorate and die, however, so you can't use traps as live meat  larders.

Re: Ski exploit? The usage of two ski sticks is a rather modern thing. In the old days a single pole was used, and I suspect it would be similar to using a sesta with a raft (and I suspect you'd usually use two hands rather than one). As indicated, you'd use a single Northern spear as the single ski pole. Now, in UrW you can still have a javelin in the other hand and throw it (at the target) to free up that hand for dual wielded spear usage.

Somewhere on this forum there's a link to a discussion of old time skiing, including some depictions from, I think, the 16:th century where a single pole was used both to one side (like a paddle or sesta) and between the legs.

Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World? So I probably went a little overboard with winter fishing.  I got about 150 dried trout and 120 dried salmon.  Then I was able to catch a big bear (260 dried cuts) and two elks (350 dried cuts.)  I don't think I'll go hungry for a while.

Re: Healing others? It's your fault for getting a companion with a ranged weapon. Never do that. As you've seen they fire at the enemy while being completely oblivious of friendlies being in the line of fire or even blocking it completely. I'm not even sure the ranged companions I've hired before I wised up have a total enemy damage count that's higher than that inflicted on allies, and they've definitely killed allies.

This game is not intended as a venue for homicidal maniacs, lol.

That being said, what human would allow someone to pile wood
around them and burn them alive?  (Other than one of those monks
in orange robes over in India.)
