Ancient histories of Unreal World I'm not sure if this has been posted before, so I apologize if it has.

I stumbled recently on the CRPG addict site and he has a very in-depth review of the UnReal World v. 1.00b for DOS!  The author is planning to explore each version and I found it very interesting to see how different the game is and how far it has developed today :)

Re: Rauko Rauko decides to turn back north, hoping to find some territory that is familiar.

Suddenly, traveling through a large forest mostly of spruces, a dirty-looking wildman sees them. By the time Rauko can drop his heavy gear and arm himself with shield, axe, and knife, Badgerbane has run to attack!

Rauko runs to the fight and is halfway there when his dog is hit two times by the man's two-handed axe and has trouble staying on her feet. By the time Rauko closes with the man, she has been knocked down and isn't moving.

Angered, Rauko stabs the red-clad man in the hip with a knife thrust, then moves over to protect his fallen companion. The whistling axe strikes Rauko in the side, but the wound is minor thanks to his mail. After trading blows a few times, the man stabs him deeply in the leg with a knife.

Wounded, and with his shield seriously damaged by the axe, Rauko is worried. As the fight goes on, he struggles to overcome the intense pain of his wounds.

The man strikes a blow to his shoulder, but loses his grip on the axe. Rauko's shield also slips from his grasp.

Both retrieve their dropped weapons and the wildman is quicker and Rauko sustains another hit to his thigh.

They trade blows a few more times and Rauko is knocked down, blacking out only for a moment. He rouses himself quickly and struggles to get up as he is hit again.

Blood on his hand is slippery and he can't hold his handaxe.

Rauko sees his father's face, calling to him...

He goes to be with his father.

A safe place for cows Hi everybody, first post in this new forum.

Just to share a design for a cow's pen (or any other animal) that seems to be safe from predators. It is like this:

   X X X O X X X
   O X F F F X O
   X X X O X X X

F = free space
X =fence
O = Trap pit with stakes

The idea is as follows. First, build the 1st ring around the free area, where your animal will reside:

   X F F F X

This will not stop any predator, so you add...traps!

           O
     O X F F F X O
           O

And, to make sure the predators will be funneled to the traps, make a 2d ring in such a way that there are always 2 fences between the exterior and the free space, or a trap. Like this:

   X X X O X X X
   O X F F F X O
   X X X O X X X

It looks like a 4-point castle, and it is amazingly effective. I think predators can only penetrate one fence, so, if they don't realize there is a trap, they try to take the shortcut and...bingo! A new wolf skin.

It also works with elks and the like, just bait each trap with elk-meth, aka turnips, and you are done. Last time I did this, I got like 4 elks and a wolf, while my bull Benicio el Toro (what else to call a toro?  ;D) just looked on, amused.

Try it and tell me how it goes!

Regards,
U.

Hurt, helpless and winter! (Challenge) The rules
https://www.unrealworld.fi/forums/index.php?topic=901.0

Background

Kaitto Koivulainen, a farmer from Koivula was tending to the village crops during the Fallow month, as any Koivula usually do. It was peacefull, so peacefull it was boring, he looked over the skies and saw a Goshawk flying about, hunting the pests and vermin that plague the crops every year and started to wonder. "How would it be, to be a Goshawk, free to fly to wherever it feels like?".
Spoiler: show

His daydream was broken has a small group of Kaumolaiset travellers entered the village lands and went foward to talk with the sage, one of their companions was hurt pretty badly during their travel, it seemed like he had a bad encounter with a bear. The village sage treated his wounds and they departed.
The vision of the brave Kaumolaiset hunters clicked in the young boy's mind, and shortly he departed from his home to seek for adventure, he had some seeds to trade along the north-eastern tribes, also got a few tools from his father.
Spoiler: show

After many days of travel, he was lost. Not knowing where to go or how to go back, but, he continued fowards anyways.
Not long after getting lost he saw the figure of persons on the distance and ran their way, what a stupidity I say, they were robbers, they beat him up and took everything he had, even his body clothes. It was the Winter start and Kaitto had no clothes, no food, not even a knife.
Spoiler: show

The Adventure

"I am lost, every inch of my body hurts and I have serious wounds over all my body, It was foolish of me to depart from the village. What do I have now? No food, no clothes and no water... On top of that am wounded, lost on this unknown place and the Winter is starting!... Think Kaitto, think, what should you do now? Koivula is to the south-east... Yes, south-east is where I should head to. But first I need to find some food, water and wood."

Spoiler: show

And the young boy departed heading south-east, looking at every place for wood, food and water. Not long after heading south he found some berries and a water pound, so he got the berries even not knowing which berries were those, he drank some water and cleaned his wounds the best of his ability and continued travelling south-east.

Spoiler: show

As he travelled, he saw in the distance a mountain growing ontop of the pines and spruces that dotted the land and decided to head towards it.
"I will have better chances to know where I am if I head towards that mountain. Okay, let's go, fast and steady."
Once reaching the mountain base he started climbing it until the top, just to find out he was nowhere he knew, the land was still strange, unknown and terrifying but he saw a mountain along the south and headed there.

Spoiler: show

Once again he climbed the mountain only to find nothing.

Spoiler: show

But he saw a mire that extended as long as his eyes could caught, mires are easier to travel and navigate, and he followed down the mire. It was the 5th day of travel already, Kaitto only had berries to eat and a stone knife, but wasn't going to give up, so he keept travelling.
For three days more he travelled, roughly towards the south thru the mire until he saw the spirits had not forgotten him, he was not alone, the spirits had given him a way to survive.

Spoiler: show

He couldn't believe it at the very first look, it was an elk, almost trapped in a bigger pound on the mire, he closed in, trying to mantain the elk at the pond untill he was exausth and then striked.

Spoiler: show

But the elk ran away after getting slightly hurt by his stone knife. Mindlessly Kaitto started the long chase after the Elk thru the mires. His berries were about to end, he had no more food and the friggid winds already had started to blow.
He chased the elk thru the mires for days, finally trapping him once again against another pond.
Spoiler: show

But as it happened before, the Elk managed to run away, but not before some serious wounds were delivered. Kaitto ran after him, as the Elk slowly exhausted himself to the point he couldn't run anymore and so, he managed to kill the Elk, after god knows how many days after the animal.

Spoiler: show

(I will add to the story as it happens, now Kaitto is tanning and cooking the Elk. All hail Kaitto, the master hunter)

Guinness world record for "First open-world survival videogame" The second world record received acknowledges UnReal World as a forefather of the genre.

So...

Back in 2016 we got (and proudly hold) the record for longest update support for a videogame in GWR Gamer's Edition 2017.
And now, in the recently published Guinness World Records Gamer's Edition 2019 UnReal World gets the record for "First open-world survival videogame". Oops, we kind of created a videogame genre, but we do not regret :)

The book happily presented at the end of this post is a Finnish edition, and here's how GWR mentions the record in English:
Quote
"The second millennial decade has witnessed an explosion of open-world survival games, particularly on the Steam platform with the success of PC tiles such as DayZ, Ark: Survival Evolved and the battle-royale shooter PlayerUnknown's Battlegrouds.
The genre's trues roots can most likely be traced back to the indie sandbox RPG UnReal World, first released in 1992. Set in Iron Age Finland, player's principal aim was to survive its challenging and harsh environments. Incredibly, the game was still going strong and receiving updates, as of September 2017. The game was developed by two people - head creator Sami Maaranen and programmer Erkka Lehmus (both Finland). As of September 2017, it held the record for longest update support for a videogame."
(Yeah, it's out-of-date info with latest updates as the books live in press-time info. And in case somebody wonders about the near future updates a new bugfix and balancing patch is actually to be released this month.)

Cheers and thanks to all of you for making history and taking part in creation of a videogame genre with us.

Erkka (co-designer) at the left, Sami (creator) and Alli (the cat) at the right.
And if you take a look at our previous GWR post it seems like have started a tradition with these world record promo pictures as well ;)
