Re: Active hunting tips? Erkka's response shows that I'm wrong at least when it comes to distance.

What I meant (which might not be correct, based on Erkka's response) was that moving the EXTRA distance resulting from diagonal movement doesn't take longer (as opposed to the firing distance being longer, which Erkka said it is).

Re: Cellar mechanics Yes, as JP_Finn said, unless it's silently changed, bears can open doors. That was a rather nasty surprise...

Re: Trapping advice JP_Finn describes how it works in reality. The UrW logic is somewhat different, as pawboards can catch animals that just step on that tile. In your case you left the diagonals open, and I would expect animals to frequently walk around the traps to get to the center, assuming they want to go to the center.

I get animals in empty snares, small deadfalls, and pawboards because I use them to keep animals out of my farm plot area, not actually to trap animals. It's not a lot, but it happens.

When I actually try to catch animals, I make trap lines of something like 5 traps, ideally with trees along the line to make it longer. In that case I also bait each trap with bait I believe the intended prey is interested in. As has been noted in another thread, that kind of trap line doesn't work in real life, because the traps aren't directly beside each other, so it depends on how much you want to game the game in the game (couldn't resist the pun).

Re: Black Smiths and Armor Sizes If I understand it correctly, smiths moved from settlement to settlement as they were highly paid and thus exhausted the demand (or at least ability to pay) reasonably quickly. I would guess they had the local population set up the stationary facilities and then used those to serve the local village cluster before moving on with their own equipment, possibly having the existing fixed facilities repaired/maintained when visiting a village that had facilities from previous smith visits.
If that's the case, you'd have to be lucky to catch smiths on their tours (possibly helped by asking villagers about smith whereabouts).

Re: i know it goes aginst the spirit but im frustrated with the fact its perma death I disagree with Tinker's desire to force the personal preferences onto everyone else.

I'm perfectly OK with there being an option to play in "ironman mode" (or whatever each individual game happens to call it), but it should be a selection in all but the games for which instant game over either doesn't make sense, or it somehow doesn't make sense not to have it.

I'm aware that some people have trouble restraining themselves from save scumming if the option is there, and it certainly would help them to not cheat themselves if they can block the ability to do so. However, it certainly doesn't help them to train themselves to not give in to temptation, but games are typically played because the player enjoys them, not as tools for self improvement in minor ways.

Finally, I see absolutely no reason for the ultra hardcore stance that you have to start over from scratch if the game crashes (without the player [subconsciously] causing it to crash), or a power outage or hardware failure results in a crash. I respect that there are people who take that stance: it's fine with me as long as they don't try to force it onto others, but don't expect me to actually understand the reasoning.

Also, note that I'm talking about single player games exclusively. I have no tolerance for cheating in multi player games and no respect for braggarts who save scum and then claim to have pulled off incredible feats but conveniently "forget" to mention the save scumming part.

Re: Sneak preview of textilecraft system with screenshots and additional insight
Can you use boiling water for faster retting? Or is it too much work and not much improvement over it? I think this could add another functionality for pots in game but I have no idea if you can even do this.
I've got no actual knowledge, so it's just guesswork, but boiling would probably be bad because the heat would probably decay a number of compounds that you'd want to retain, and certainly kill off the bacteria that should have been doing the work. However, heating it to temperatures that are warmer than the surroundings but low enough that the bacteria reach their optimal working temperature ought to work, but seems very impractical: instead of just waiting for nature to do the work for you you'd use up a lot of firewood keeping a fire going and babysit it to ensure it doesn't get too warm. All this just to shave a few days off from the time it takes (which probably would take days anyway).
There's also a possibility that the process needs the water to be replaced gradually to remove some byproducts and bring in suitable nutrients.

I doubt it's something that would have been done historically, as it makes sense only for single individuals suddenly stranded in the middle of nowhere with no tribe or friends and in dire need of yarn. The time would probably be better spent processing nettles by hand for a small amount of desperately needed material, or gathering more raw materials for a larger amount (or trying to get something to eat while the retting is progressing and possibly building up a minor stock of food to allow for the following steps of the processing to be performed with limited food acquisition interrupts).

Re: "Task List" completion problem Adding to Plotinus' day turnover advice: Apart from injury healing taking place at that mysterious time, skill increase indicators are reset and spoil calculations are made (so meat can go from standard to stale and from stale to spoiled at that time if it's warm enough).

Re: Angry Water Spirits It ought to be that fish sacrifices to to the water spirits and other sacrifices goes to the forest ones, but the results seem rather random.

The spirits will calm down over time if you don't do anything that aggravates them (such as fishing). I try to sacrifice fish when I can (which is tricky, as fish don't come in cuts, and sacrificial of a whole salmon is rather silly when that's the only thing you've caught over 3 full days of fishing). However, I try to time fish sacrifices such that I sacrifice the last piece of roasted fish rather than eating it (including saving the last bit for the next sacrifice and instead start to eat the next fish. or even go hungry).
My routine includes a daily sacrifice regardless of whether anything warranting a sacrifice has happened or not, and I try to do that in late morning so I don't forget.

The rituals that can only be done at particular times can only be performed at those times, although the fishing related ones refer to the first time after the event, which, in my interpretation at least, means it can well be in summer if you haven't caught anything in between (because you haven't lived off of fishing).

Re: Angry Water Spirits I believe cooked fish does work, although it's vague enough that you can't really tell with certainty. It can also be noted that one of the rituals involves fish soup (although general sacrifice of fish soup would probably either not work or cost you the bowl it's in as well, and so would be rather expensive).

Re: Creating Settlements The travel issue isn't that overland map travel is too fast (I'm not sure it is faster in game than zoomed in travel, although it's obviously a lot faster for the player, which is a good thing). Instead, the issue from that perspective is that the game world is very small, so all the cultures of proto-Finland are crammed into a space that's maybe 1/10 of Finland's actual size.

A lot of development has happened on the HW front since UrW development started, so what may have been too large a world back then might not be now. However, the feel of the game would change a fair bit if distances were made realistic, although I'm not sure that would necessarily be a bad thing.

Edit: The size is more like 1/100 of the real world size, with 1/10 in each of the two dimensions.
