General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?

I tried doing the quest sheep/cow in the forest cover. The sage was very insinstent that i HAVE to be the right person for the job and that i should have good relations with the spirits. Or else i would suffer "great misfortune". As a proud Iron age Finnish atheist, i paid little attention to his rumblings. Well, let me tell you, that was a huge mistake.

Right as i get into the quest area, i spot robbers. They were roaming INSIDE the quest area. I am sure, at that time, that this is a coincidense. I avoid them and start searching for tracks away from them. The first day is approaching to an end and i make camp next to the river. I fall asleep and wake up in the early hours. It's almost pitch black, it is snowing and i hear a rustle. Then i hear a terrible snort and after a few turns i am attacked by a bear. In 10 years playing this game on and off, i don't think i have been attacked during the night more than once. Thankfully it's a small female bear and i barely survive the encouter, or i should say, get saved by my beast of a dog. The result is attached in two images.

After that "unfortunate" encouter i continue searching the quest area for another two weeks. During those two weeks in this area i came across at least another bear (found tracks of two, i saw one), at least two lynxes (tracks of three, saw two), wild sows, at least two elks and a herd of reindeer. I don't have a clue what came over the game to spawn such a population, but thinking back on the robbers, bears and lynxes encounters, i am convinced that i was not worthy at all and the forest spirits literally tried to kill me!

In conclusion, the forest spirits are real, don't ever anger them and listen to your village sages, they know what's up. Oh, also i searched every tile of the quest area and never found any cow tracks.

He actually got the idea for those bouncing ones from Sami's Youtube channel: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Owy6sAPusoc

Tod is a bit wrong on their provenance though, they are from Uralic Ugric peoples and not from Lapland.

What???? Never even knew about this channel! Nice video, thanks for the suggestion!

Fresh video on ancient to medieval arrow heads and their possible uses. Extremely informative and entertaining, from one of my favorite youtubers!!

Favorite arrowhead, the water bouncing/skipping one for duck hunting!!!

but also cut by the ice,

Great idea in general. You shouldn't be able to run literally for hours behind prey without some minor scratches or bruises! Although completely miniscule on their own, they would add up in the long term if you overdo it day in and day out. I know that muscle strain and pain from overdoing it is allready in the planned additions for the future and i can't wait!!

Hello and happy new year! Coming back on one of my favorite games after a couple of years off and immediately had a lightbulb moment!!

I was trying to hunt these days and i was experiencing complete failure, as it should be. The harder this game is the better, that's what survival is!

But then suddenly, after all these years of hunting in this game, something clicked in my head. The animal AI can't differentiate shallow from deep water (or can it these days? in my recent experiences, it still can't), so i took full advantage of it. I stopped hunting except if i could force them to run in mires... And sure enough i had so many kills, so many poor deer and elk going breathless running in circles trapped between single tiles of shallow water, while i was running straight through them. It was comical. So many hundrends of kilos of meat that i didn't have enough time to cook before it goes stale, felt like cheating!

And here comes the suggestion. Obviously animals in real life can perceive when the water is shallow enough so that they can run through it to get away from a predator. So why not in the game too? My suggestion is that big animal AI should just ignore shallow water and ice on shallow water and just run through it to get away from you. Especially those 1 tile water tiles in mires!

This little exploit of their AI i am describing is such a big contrast with the otherwise amazing hunting simulator this game is, that's why i felt like making a post. I tried to very quickly search the forum, but i didn't find any similar suggestion.

Decided to be real smart about it and place my mini trap fence in a sweet narrow place across the lake. That way i would have easy access to the real wilderness with the punt without needing to walk for kilometers each way. Didn't think winter is around the corner. As soon as i finished my little fence, ice sets in  :-\
