Gameplay questions / Re: turnip seeds
« on: April 20, 2020, 03:54:32 AM »
There's turnip that's in Food section in inventory, and then there's turnip that's in Plant section in inventory.

You need the Plant category turnips, placed on ground on the tile you're standing on, then [^A]griculture | Thresh. That'll produce turnip (Food) and turnip seeds.

Also, if memory serves... if you collect the turnips with "," (comma) or g, you won't get the turnip(plant), just the edible vegetable. I might need to play farmer at some point, been a while (2008-2009?).

Not bugs / NOT a bug. Just aggressive coding on lynx behavior.
« on: April 20, 2020, 01:07:09 AM »
I just came back from meeting with old man with long beard, picked up dogs from the cabin, headed to the sage who tasked me with meeting the old man... came back to cabin to lynx killing Bunnigus the reindeer. Drat. Happens. So I leave 1 dog in the reindeer pen. Go to cut couple slender trunks and gather some stones for weights to trap that lynx. Come back, get on to tan Bunnigus' hide. To get interrupted by alarm barking. Stopped the tanning, turn around the corner and Grethel the reindeer is dead in the pen.
Now, I'm not sure if I should make Elsa the dog in to mittens for not doing her only job.

Or is there alternative reason for how/why the lynx managed to kill my other reindeer, right next to the dog?

Edit: updated title

I recall my old character waking up sweating with nightmares, (around 2008?)when I spammed a sage for healing like 20x day for couple days in a row. Might be worth updating the wiki with various karma -- standing with spirits actions.

@Sami, screen shot or two of your test would make it easier to get those, "yeah I like that" comments. I don't mind getting them in darker hue, but I don't mind the grayscale either.

Suggestions / Inventory interface change/tuning
« on: April 17, 2020, 06:09:33 PM »
At the moment arrow keys 'left' and 'right' in inventory are duplicates of 'up' and 'down'.
Multiple keyboards on laptops and alternative platforms don't have PgUp and PgDn keys.
Would it be possible to either have the 'left'-'right' arrow keys to hop between groups* or to function as PgUp and PgDn keys?

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: Green squares in sprites on MacOS
« on: April 17, 2020, 02:29:44 AM »
@PALU, @Privateer; that was it. I opened the images in Preview*, then bulk exported them as .png with Alpha deactivated.

PALU, @Pepinopino reported the issue on his Mac on Feb 17th 2020. With Vanilla and modded versions both, that's why replied to this bug report. Hopefully it won't be a big issue for Sami&Erkka to disable the Alpha channel when packaging Mac releases.

Thank you!

*Mac isn't great for certain things, but it comes with bunch of handy tools/utilities.

Suggestions / Mushroom blanching
« on: April 17, 2020, 12:09:05 AM »
Currently the limit to Boil / blanch mushrooms is set to 10 pieces. That's 1lb for most uncooked/raw mushrooms. sure mushrooms aren't as dense as meat/vegetables, but even mushroom soup (when using non-poisonous mushroom directly) accepts 2lbs of mushrooms, or 20 of the same mushrooms used mentioned above. So it shouldn't be volume of the pot issue.

Can we increase the boiling item intake, for mushrooms, to 20 or 30 items? (the boil herbal/meat/fish I feel is good as is at 10 pieces)

Edit: larger mushroom like Bearpaw at 0.4 lbs, the set max of 10 is pretty good. So smaller 0.1lbs mushrooms max would be nice at 40 units, or 4 lbs, like bearpaws'.

Gameplay questions / Re: Various questions from a new player
« on: April 16, 2020, 07:00:38 PM »
Fine fur, comes from minorly damaged skin and reasonable hideworking with decent or better (broad) knife.
Hacked carcass won't yield better than ragged fur and so on.

Certain animals, most mustelids, are better shot with regular (fine, superior arrows) rather than blunt arrows. One serious puncture* damages the hide less than 2-3 hits with blunts* IME
*and axe poll, spear shaft or kick. Hits on the head&skull do not count to hide damage.

Throwing squirrel with a rock to knock it down a tree, then kicking it's skull yields fine hide ~90% of the time with regular broad knife and hide working >50%

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: Green squares in sprites on MacOS

I only have the issue if I try to use Jaredonian's graphics pack on 10.13.6 (High Sierra).
Vanilla 3.62 has no issues of the background color processed transparent/displayed correctly.

Edit: I tried turning on the "old hardware mode" to see if SW rendering would do any difference, the green/teal overlays are still there. But every text looked like lego blocks...

Edit2: it can’t be the background color either, as npc-eadv (vanilla) has identical RGB with  Jaredonian’s pc-male(northern tribe) background...
Might(must?) be something in the graphics engine / how SDL processing is done on Mac..?

Gameplay questions / Re: [Question] Max item limit per map tile?
« on: April 15, 2020, 05:41:29 AM »
The limit must be for stacks, not items within stacks. Building log... villa? usually results in high 4-, low 5-digit pile of branches. Running a farm creates tons of items.

My point on don’t worry on exact starting skills point too much. I.e. putting a point in fishing is ok to drag along your character couple more days unless you pump it past 50%. It’s ok skill to pass time/rest with when building cabin by water or winter’s nights. Cooking like you noted yourself is useless to put a point in if you don’t have anything to cook.
So worrying about exact starting skills is useless, and like said: debatable.
Spear is useful for hunting while skiing.
One could also debate, Club, as that preserves hides and is the skill for rocks and stones, thrown.

For a first run, I’d likely suggest going Kaumo custom very easy and tanking Flail, Sword and Shield, drop skiing and swimming to teens/20s, then pump up hideworking&carpentry (to 60s), trapping&axe point each and bow(all the way to max). Not much of a challenge, but to get newbies “going”

Gameplay questions / Re: Problems with rituals
« on: April 14, 2020, 08:36:34 AM »
@Tinker, as long as your character doesn’t try to hunt in small region only, he/she should do fine. Couple hunting camps some days apart from each other* and throw some farming, forage & fishing in the mix and the “spirits” shouldn’t be too much off whack.

*kill game, smoke it. Pack it, move to next cabin/cave, move kota. Winter time is easier as you only need to build shelter and dry the meat. Drying does take longer though.

Maybe that’ll be my next character. Nomadic, agnostic, Koivulais woodsman.

Suggestions / Winter hides
« on: April 13, 2020, 05:55:28 PM »
The winter hides are at the moment strictly bound to the UnReal calendar. Come Winter, animals tend to puff up before cold hits and most every year the first frost and snowfall do align pretty nicely with the Winter Season and beginning of Dirt month.

But come Swidden and beginning of Summer, with snow still knee/thigh/waist high, animals suddenly drop their winter fur.
It'd be bit more appropriate if the animals shed their warm winter fur after the cold/freezing season has passed.
i.e. animals should retain their winter fur until ice is mostly or fully gone (Swidden to Fallow);  according to weather, not calendar.

General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?
« on: April 13, 2020, 05:41:06 PM »
Preparing 3rd settlement for winter. Mihku has plenty of meat, feathers, cords and rocks to fletch to get through the winter. And whenever he ever sees robbers, he stops what he’s doing and relocates to another settlement. He had enough when group took his tunic and trousers and he had to travel across the entire unreal world with his privates flailing loose. Cave cabins are his favorite, as they don’t usually need more than 7-14 felled trees.

Good work!

The beginning skills can always be debated. So don’t worry on those too much.
Sometimes I put points in fishing&spear and other times I put them on bow, carpentry.
But I don’t recall making character and not putting points in hide working.
