Re: Generic chat thread Hello... I'm enjoying a couple of vacation days!
But it is cool and raining so I'm inside the house now.
How is the weather in the Netherlands today?

On the radio now is "Ahead of Myself" by X Ambassadors.

Last week I went to a concert: Imagine Dragons with Grouplove & K.Flay
I like all 3 bands, but tickets are way too expensive and Dragons seemed
to be in a contest to have the loudest speakers... ear-piercing treble.
They had a wall of man-sized speakers 16 wide by 8 tall behind stage.
128 speakers was a bit over the top, especially for all the little kids.

Anyone else with a concert experience?

Re: Generic chat thread Damp. Fairly warm for the time of year (~14C; just last week we had several days well over 20C which is ridiculous for mid-October) but ugh. Makes the wrist I broke twice a tad achy too.

Yup. Several small-scale metal concerts and a couple of times to a free yearly outdoors festival in the city my boyfriend's originally from. Festival grew far too large the last few years, though. No longer fun to go to, just a huge mass of people including many, many obnoxious ones. Music selection went down the drain too.

How's the weather where everyone else is?
And any other concert experiences?

Re: Bow accuracy
Quote
the game takes place in the late iron age "considered by many to fall between around 1200 BC and 600 BC"

Iron Age in Finland is roughly 500 BC - 1200 AD, and the game world draws its inspiration from latter Iron Age, around 1000 - 1200 AD. The thing is, while the most of Europe was living Middle Ages, culture in Finland wasn't dominated by Catholic Church. In Finland we had anything like Middle Age only after 1200 AD, when Viking kings had converted to Christianity and launched crusades into pagan Finland to spread the dominance of Catholic Church. Oh well. But I'd guess 1200 AD pagan hunter bows were about as skilfully crafted as 1200 AD English bows.

What comes to the actual subject of this thread, one main factor which I don't see mentioned is if the target is moving or not. While you could hit an immobile target size of a playing card, it becomes consiredably harder to hit a target of same size if its moving at irregular speed. So if you want to hit birds at max range, try picking the stationary ones - but then, if they are standing on ground, they are so low that other factories (like the gravity pull) are more likely to make it so that your arrow hits the ground before reaching the target.

Re: Poems of the Fallen
Just a quick note which hopefully doesn't get things sidetracked;
I absolutely love this thread.  It's so great this was started, and that people joined in.

Oh I would love to have some of these verses to be composed into proper songs. Any composers/musicians/singers around who'd need a new project... :)

Sami, I am actually wanting to put a tune to Njerpez Fallen and make a recording of me singing it along with playing the tune on my mandolin, if Silenia wouldn't be opposed to me doing that with their work! Not for profit or anything like that, of course, but simply as a fun little project  ;D
No opposition from me as long as you put a quick note along the lines of "Lyrics by Silenia at UnReal World forums" or "Adapted a poem by Silenia at UnReal World forums" somewhere. :) If you need to make some small changes to improve the flow, that's quite fine too. :)

Re: Poems of the Fallen Lessons at the campfire

Oh young hunter listen well
to the tales I will here tell
For you can't hunt if you don't know
The behaviour your prey might show

Big goshawk often flies up high
She hunts through the vast blue sky

Ringed seal splashes up the shore
then dives below the waves once more
Grey seal, well, it's hard to hunt her
she too has a habit of diving under

Badger may look slow but beware
When fleeing he's as fast as any hare

Big squirrel sitting in a tree
Thinking 'ha ha you can't reach me'
(Catch him with a well-aimed throw
or shoot blunt arrows from a bow)

Beaver is gone in a flash
Diving under with a splash

Put a turnip in a loop snare
and some day you'll catch a hare
Drop a turnip on a trap pit
You might just find an elk in it

Forest reindeer next to a tree
There must be a few more I can't see

Set up a light lever for a bird
Wake up to hear one getting hurt
One remaining feather doesn't match
An eagle owl made off with the catch

Oh young hunter listen well
To the tales I did here tell
Learn their habits, quirks and all
And to your weapons they will fall

Re: Drawings of my travels in UnReal. Hi again,

I stumbled upon this article, I though it would be fun for this community.

You will be credited for sure, and my intention is to upload it and only place the link here in the forums since I wanted it to be a sort of gift to the UrW community for being so awesome and supporting this amazing game :)

Also, sorry if this has knocked the thread off-track
Then we're good. :) And aye, UrW is awesome and so's the community.
As for knocking the thread off-track, hardly; it's pretty on-topic is it? Besides, it's easy enough for me to nudge the thread slightly back on track even if it were to get a bit off-track: just post a new poem.

Speaking of:

Lessons at the campfire II

Oh young hunter listen well,
to the tales I will here tell.
All around us does food grow
but do not eat what you don't know

Pink-purple flowers, nary a leaf
bring to dirty wounds relief
Or in a pot of water heated
For coughs or poison to be treated

White or yellow flowers on water sit
A big round green leaf with a slit
Oh! Water lily nor river pig should you eat
Or you'll have poisoning to treat

Around freshwater shores grows common reed
It will serve you well in times of need
Harvest in summer, then in autumn pound
to in winter bake bread if no food is around

Growing on tree roots near the ground
White as an egg; while young just as round
Leave them be; don't eat it at all
Sand mushroom poisoning is oft lethal

Big broad leaves and long thin root
Flowers stick to clothes and good
Eat raw to remove poison through your sweat
Add to wounds to guard against infection's threat

Oh young hunter listen well;
Of many plants I have yet to tell
you but the night is growing late
So for another day you'll have to wait

(And if you can't wait that long, oh,
please do not eat what you don't know)

Re: Generic chat thread Infinite candy, three one dollar energy drinks, two packs of pall malls, three grams of skunk, one six-pack of 9%ers and I've got a beautifully made cabin on the Unreal World and new bags under my eyes. The girlfriend blacked out and woke up in her car sans glasses and keys, only to find them in the bushes near the door from a prior attempt at ingress into her dwelling. Anyone else have a good halloween?! :D

"The Challenge" "The Challenge" is simple:

Survive one winter!

But...

...under rules and terms listed below:

1) Character creation
-Custom
-Random culture
-Winter
-Do not re-roll your stats, go with first generated ones
-Improve any skills you like

2) Map generation
-You are lost, do not look where you start, it has to be random. Best you can do is close your eyes and press "r" for random starting location and then "e" for start.

3) Scenario and game course
-Hurt, helpless, and afraid (and naked, explained later)
-The UnReal World

4) Start
-As I said, you are naked, take all clothes off ("T" then "+" then press space)
-You have nothing with you, drop all items on ground ("d" then "+" then press space)
-Destroy all ("D" and keep confirming discard with Enter button until all is gone)
-Yes, you are naked and have nothing apart of will to survive (and few wounds to heal)

5) Rules
-Do not zoom out with Enter, do not even peek, you are lost, remember? Travel only on zoomed in map
-Do not use big map "F6"
-You can peek on a peak (you can use Enter to take a look around only when standing on top of the mountain but you cannot walk on zoomed out map), you can ignore this rule, but personally I think it's fair to take a look from top of mountain.
-If you get to village by any luck, you can start to travel on zoomed out map
-Survive whole winter
-Have fun!

"The Challenge" is doable, I've done well few times but died of my stupidity in half way through like:
-chased big game and get drown under broken ice
-frozen to death as were not enough lucky to get fire started, should have think about fire earlier
-attacked sleeping Njerpez and get killed - what a nightmare!! ;)

Now I've got new char but it's carving for water and I cannot fine any.
I could give you few tips but I don't want to spoil your experience.

Please post below your stories if you ever dare to try "The Challenge".

Edit:
- do not use mods, you can have them, just don't use them during first winter.

(also edited point4.2 to clearly state that you start with nothing at all)
