Stakes are automatically selected from nearby&inventory when building fences, but withes need manual selection from inventory.
It’d be easier if the game would auto select the withes nearby. If no 4’ withes nearby, then ask to select cord or rope sections from inventory.

I think there are at least two (2) reasons this occurs.
1) Since fence uses {Tying equipment} a choice is required.
2) Since fence uses 'lengths' vs whole units/items a choice is required.

Yes. I’m aware tying equipment use has always been manual.
But then, it also was norm to smoke and dry meat in 19lbs batches...
I truly appreciate the addition of withes. It makes Spring start characters able to dry meat/fish from get go. But building trap fences becomes a constant: drop withes; leave 6 withes, make 3 sections of fence, pick stack of withes, move to next spot, drop withes; leave 6, make 3 fence section, pick stack of withes ...
Or maybe I’m only one to lay out all trap pit and fence needs before starting the build...?
Even better if the code would allow modded items to have option to: auto-select 1st, auto-select highest quality, or manual select.

Yes, it's a bit cumbersome. Upon first adding withes I kind of wanted to have fences to be built with withes alone. That would streamline fence building
as only number of withes could required, and would also be true to the tradition. But as we've allowed using other cordage too, in length based units, this is how it goes.
Easiest solution would be to always withes in fence building, other solutions are more demanding. One way could be to add preferred tying equipment mechanics
which would then select withes automatically if available.

Going to add that as a modder the mods add things that are low cost, low quality tying material like the withes.
The option of withes first then tying equipment is preffered from a modding view point.

Last option Sami mentioned would work.
If withes are available, default to them. If no withes (or not enough) are available, then ask player to select tying equipment from the character’s inventory. Takes away nothing, eases building with historically accurate withes.
