Title: Is it possible to lock an item to a letter?

What I mean by my title is something I have seen in other games. Is it possible to set an items letter in the inventory? For instance if I have a fishing rod that is 'f' then it is easy enough to rf and repeat my fishing. However if I get another items then all the numbers rejigger themselves and suddenly it is 'g' or something.
