Have any of you had villagers steal your meat/fish?
When active hunting across the map (or checking on nets), I will often butcher the carcass and take the meat cuts to a nearby village and smoke or dry the meat (or fish) in their village. Most of the time, I come back when it is done and pick up the stacks of dried or smoked meat, no problem. But some villages seem to take my meat -- I return to find my smoked meat/fish gone but the cords are still there in a pile. They don't even bother to hide the evidence. The meat isn't anywhere in the village.
What prompts some villages to smoke or dry my meat and others to steal it?

Food left on village property will be picked up and eaten over time.
I often gift birchbark shoes for shoeless and about 1/8-1/2 of the meat to the villagers when picking up as the payment for their labor. (Any poor quality weapons, trapping or fishing gear I gift to the kids in the villages I visit)
Use a map to mark you smoking meats with estimated completion date, be there 1 day prior or at least 2-3 after.
