Title: [Fixed - 3.86.1] Irrational durability loss of gears reclaimed from robbers
Post by: Ezhe on April 16, 2025, 03:43:26 PM
So, I had a blacksmith crafted me a wonderful masterwok iron spectacle helm and was wearing this brand new helm. The other day, I ran into a bunch of robbers and with the confidence from the helm, I fought back. However, they still took me down and took everything from me including that helm. Luckily, some villages were not far from where I was ambushed, so I decide to ask for some help. Shortly later, I brought two helpers back and killed those robbers. I was happy to retrieve my gears, especially that nice new helm of mine, but when I took a look at the helm, I found the helm basically ruined. (A picture of that is attached below)

It lost about 60% of durability, though the robber had it for just a couple of hours. How could he ruined it this badly. The helm had experienced only two battles. I didn't remember iron helms are so easily to be damaged.

My hypothesis is that the durability of the helm didn't inhert its original value. It was regenerated as other armor type loot. I don't know if this is supposed to be a bug or design. but it feels a bit strange.

Edited: added the version information

And it seems that what the robbers carried in his inventory kept its original durability but what the robber put on would experience this strange durability loss. This remains to be verified.

Maybe it was damaged during the initial battle, if you got hit in the head a few times?  Or during the battle to recapture it, if the robber was wearing it and you or your mates smashed his head in?

Actually I was thinking the same at first, but in fact, this is not the first time I met this problem, so I was thinking perhaps otherwise. But yes, it could be the case. Let me check the message log detailly and do some testing...

This sounds like an actual bug. I believe the game has mistakenly tried to generated "wear out history" for the helmet when it ended up in the robbers possession.

Btw, it was nice to read the backstory preceeding the issue. A kind of "quest for retrieving the stolen helmet" got generated just like that. I like how these things work. ;)

robbers must have played and manhandled it for the couple of hours you were gone. No wonder they are outcasts.

This has been fixed now, with rather complex but necessary measures. There was rather ancient "wear out history" simulation in use for armours retrieved from defeated NPCs and that caused the bug. It's been replaced with a new system now but as a result migrated characters may be encountering NPCs whose gear is in top-notch condition as their armour were generated before the fix. New NPCs will utilize the new system and the armour damage, for their own or robbed, won't be random but rational from the next patch on.

Fixed - persists in 3.86.1

This is great to hear! Many thanks for the work!

Is this related to clothing being generated in pristine condition in 3.86.1? Specifically for newly generated characters too (easily verified with some of the starting scenarios, i.e. hunting accident and domestic animal starts).

Yes, it is related, and this issue - and all the other instances of NPCs dropping pristine clothing - will have the fix in effect in the next version.
