Off-topic / Exploring the medieval hunt (blog)
« on: May 11, 2018, 04:37:54 PM »
I was searching for some more information about javelins and I found this web site dedicated to historical reenactment.  They have some great stuff and I thought I'd share the link.

What are the conditions for this happening?  I've never seen this message.

Gameplay questions / Re: Improving Bow Skill?
« on: May 04, 2018, 07:14:26 PM »
I think bow skill increases slower than other combat skills, at least I've had a harder time increasing it than spear.  Great advice from Palu, why didn't I think of shooting at the ground?

My most recent survivor has all but abandoned the bow in favor of javelins.  I'm very impressed with the results.

Cons:
  • Shorter maximum range
  • Less ammo capacity
  • No blunt or cutting damage

Pros:
  • No more lost or broken arrows
  • Easily recover almost every shot while on the chase
  • One handed use (especially while skiing or using a shield)
  • Easy and cheap to make
  • Trains very fast (just hunt birds)
  • Uses spear skill which is a top tier melee weapon as well

As a specific example, it might be much harder to hunt a small, cautious animal like a glutton with javelins, but it won't be a picnic with a bow either.  Ulf has had no trouble bagging large game and its not rare to knock a bird out of the air up to 20m away.  Recently Ulf has been able to upgrade to fine javelins which have proven to be incredibly effective.[/list]

Gameplay questions / Re: Mother pipe, where are you?
« on: May 03, 2018, 04:06:27 AM »
I think the best way to find enough mother pipe to finish that quest is by walking around lakes.  The corners of the lake seem like the best places to look, but you just have to be persistent.

You might try harvesting the plants with the agriculture skill and threshing them for maximum yield.  I'm not positive that method will give more leaves, but it might give you some other part of the plant, like roots which you can use after you hand in all your leaves.

Gameplay questions / Re: Help with forest spirit quest
« on: May 02, 2018, 10:21:46 PM »
Ulf is the only survivor I've seen use that ritual and it seemed very effective.  Ulf settled on a small lake in the far north, seal tribe territory, in a heavily forested area with mountains ranges to all four sides.  In the three months that he has settled there game has been much more scarce than the many months prior that he was wandering the world.  With midwinter just a week away, Ulf made some bread and sacrificed it as instructed.  He was a tiny bit worried as he was told to leave the bread my a spruce tree on a hill or cliff, but the nearby hills had only young spruce trees growing on them.  Hoping for the best he pushed the bread under the branches of one such young spruce tree and spoke the words as instructed, "Klaatu verata necktie", close enough at least.  Walking to the mountain peak just a kilometer away he saw a bear, an elk and a reindeer in the distance.

I think you might be right about seeing the spirit.  I have always [l]ooked at him in each of the 3 times I have completed that quest.  I think you should build a fire and perhaps use a torch to ensure that you have good visibility, some of those winter nights are super dark.

Here is a picture from Ulf's recent summoning ceremony.  He spent most of the day gathering down wood for a large fire.

Ulf thought a heathland would be the best place to summon the spirit, due to better visibility.  Got a great sign during the day too, a goshawk chased after a grouse.

Bug reports / Re: Inaccessible cave

The door worked!  I should have probably tried that.

Thanks for the idea, I haven't tried modding yet but if I do I will post the results here as well.

Bug reports / Inaccessible cave
« on: May 01, 2018, 07:59:30 PM »
A quest reward directed my character to a cave in order to find some treasure, however there seems to have been a collapse and the treasure might exist in an inaccessible area.

Does anyone know how to work around this?  I was looking at the modding section but I didn't see anything that would change a terrain tile or allow a character to move through a wall.

Gameplay questions / Re: Southern region - where art thou?
« on: April 29, 2018, 06:23:56 AM »
Has anyone found the wolf pipe herb in game?  According to the text file it only grows in southern regions (fields and clearings).  I have never seen this plant in my travels.

I understand this is a small, perhaps trivial issue but it seems like it would be easy to fix and it could help someone new to the game better understand crafting recipes.

56
This is a small inconsistency that was causing me some confusion.  Most crafting recipes call for "tying equipment" which can be satisfied by either a rope, leather rope or a cord.  However the raft and stone axe recipes specifically call for "Rope", and I just figured out that these requirements can also be satisfied with cords.

As a fix I suggest either:

1. Change the recipe requirements to show "Tying equipment" instead of "Rope".

or

2. Modify the recipes so they only accept rope or leather rope.

General Discussion / Re: Testing ending in poisoning
« on: April 25, 2018, 07:57:24 AM »
My survivors will seldom eat them if I want to RP a spirit day, perhaps on the day of meeting the spirit of the forest.

I thought the effects might be useful if I was searching for items or perhaps tracks in a spruce infested area, as the effects make items (not sure about tracks) show up on adjacent tiles and might make them easier to see if they would have been hidden behind a tree.

I have never experienced any injury from eating them raw or soups made with them.

In the real world, vomiting out toxins should help to reduce their effects on the body (as with alcohol), so taking with an antiemetic such as meadsweet would increase the danger of eating these mushrooms.  According to Wiki, a fatal dose of amanita muscaria would be 15 caps.

58
I have not experienced this situation, where dogs or humans will jump into water without hesitation so I can't comment on it specifically.  However I have noticed that my character can chase an animal into a narrow area surrounded by water and they will never attempt to cross it, even if it's shallow and only one or two tiles wide.  This does not seem right to me especially for a large animal such as an elk, but after some thought, even a hare can swim.  Just ask my former president Mr. James Earl Carter Jr.

General Discussion / Re: triple kill aww yea

I would like to know about this content that there is a source that can find more knowledge?

Welcome to UnReal World forums.  There are lots of sources available that will give more information about the game.  However don't cheat yourself out of the excellent experience of learning how to survive on your own.  Going through the game course objectives are a fantastic way to get started.

You may be correct about carpentry, I was basing my statement from the wiki page, which may be outdated: http://www.unrealworld.fi/wiki/index.php?title=Staff

However fine javelins seem incredible to me:
