General Discussion / Official Legacy Character Thread (multiplayer urw)
« on: September 11, 2017, 12:54:41 PM »
Making a new thread for this so that we can have all the pertinent info in the OP. This is a migration of the legacy character thread from the old forum. There are some screenshots and stories of older characters in that thread that you should read but I won't copy here.

In ##urw, we have been playing legacy characters together. This post is to make coordination of the legacy characters easier.

Rules:
  • When it is your turn, play one month in game, then pass it on to the next person.
  • You have 1 real life month to play your turn. If you don't manage to pass the character on in that time, we will mark you away and send the file you received to the next person in line. You are welcome to come back any time. If you are getting close the deadline it is okay to pass on in the middle of the month, better to pass it on than not.
  • All characters share the same "next" order so that always the person who is next is the person who hasn't played in the longest. New people start at the front.
  • You can do whatever you want during your turn. Ask urwbot for a quest and/or a rule if you aren't sure what to do.
  • Try not to die. Before doing something dangerous, take dogs with you and hire some companions.
  • If you die anyway, let us know what happened, and then we'll make a new character. No savescumming.
  • Before making a new character, check that there is someone to pass the character onto with "urwbot, legacy players"
  • If you want to make a new character, ask urwbot for a hard or insane start like so: "urwbot, start hard" or "urwbot, start insane." Play the full first month of the character's life and have it ready to send before adding it to the bot.
  • Inside the character's folder is _notes.txt with a little history of what happened during the previous months of the character's life. read it when you get the character, then update it before you pass it on.
  • Use map markers to explain stuff like "meat drying by this shelter" or "this village is mad at us" so we know.

How to use urwbot to join the legacy game:

You can talk to urwbot with /msg urwbot COMMAND or urwbot, COMMAND. All commands related to the legacy character start with "legacy"

  • legacy join YOUREMAILADDRESS  - join the legacy game. your email will be kept private except that it will be PMed to the person who has a character to send you. A zipped character folder can be like 10-20MB so make sure you have room in your e-mail for that.
  • legacy leave - stop playing legacy games entirely (first pass on the character you have to someone else though!)
  • legacy away - go on vacation from legacy games. no characters will be sent to you but you can come back later.
  • legacy back - return from away, receive characters again
  • legacy mail - if you are next in line, get the email address of the person to send your character to
  • legacy mail YOURNEWEMAILADDRESS - change your email address.
  • legacy sent - tell urwbot you have sent your character to the next person in line. now you are in line for receiving a new character again.
  • legacy new NAME - you made a new character and want to send it to somebody. Don't do this if there are already 3-4 characters in circulation.
  • legacy next - find out who is next (the title of the chatroom should have this info too)
  • legacy char - find out which legacy characters are alive
  • legacy players - find out who is currently active.
  • legacy died - report to urwbot that your character has died. it will be removed from the roster and you'll be put back in line to wait for a new character.
  • legacy rule NAME - find out the rules for a character.
  • legacy rule RULE - set a new rule for the character that you have.

Got a different charcter, Talvikaksi, who got the same quest except for a reindeer and same thing, the reindeer didn't appear no matter which track she burnt spruce twigs on. burnt them on the last one in line, killed the lynx, then spent two weeks just burning the tracks one by one (just in case i was wrong about which was really the most recent track) and waiting for a few hours after each little fire but the reindeer never came. and then a badger came by and a fox and some birds and a herd of forest reindeer and there were too many tracks so all of the old reindeer tracks disappeared at once.

The quest expired and we went back to the village and immediately got the same quest again, we were told to talk to Olesa the shaman, just like last time, but now Olesa the shaman has no message for us. There are two shaman in the village, Olesa and Ilpo and neither of them have the second part of the quest. I think what happened was: we were in the village when 8 o'clock happened and the old quest was removed from the journal and the new one became available, so a new shaman named Olesa should have been generated but wasn't. I've been wandering around this little village for 2 days just looking for the new shaman and I really can't find him anywhere.

So this is sort of a different bug from the post before but it's the same quest, just a different character and i didn't feel like making a new topic. Save available of this one too if wanted.

Sometimes when you burn spruce twigs on the end of the trail and wait around, it doesn't work. I have a save available of a character in this situation, Reko.

I got the quest, killed the lynx that was in the area (I've noticed that the farm animal won't come if the predator is nearby but maybe that's just a superstition?) and skinned it and cooked it's meat and then I went back to the pig tracks and followed them to the very end.

I cut spruce twigs from the tree nearby and then without picking them up lit them on fire (maybe this is the problem? maybe i should have picked them up and then dropped them again?)

i waited for about 2-3 hours, no pig.

I tried lighting fires one at a time on the empty tiles surrounding that one, just in case there was a track there that I missed, waited a couple hours for each one, didn't work of course. I haven't burnt a fire on any of the other spaces with tracks so the trail should be preserved. I've tried tracking all around that area in places where i couldn't see tracks, just in case there was a gap in the trail and it continued but i'm pretty sure i was in the right place.

My character is saved standing on the burnt ashes of the fire that was on the last track in the trail. no pig anywhere :(

we have an IRC channel on freenode.net You can /join ##urw

once you do, if you were previously a player in the legacy game, like averious, say "urwbot, legacy back". If you're a new player, do "/msg urwbot legacy join youremailaddress" where youremailaddress is where you want us people to send a zipped character folder (tends to be about 4-10 MB).

The IRC channel is fairly quiet these days but there are still a bunch of people that regularly come in and if you start a conversation someone might reply.

I haven't migrated the IRC instructions from the other forum, but they were here: http://z3.invisionfree.com/UrW_forum/index.php?showtopic=4579

If you don't have a program like mIRC or pidgin or whatever the cool kids are using these days you can go to https://webchat.freenode.net/ to connect from a web browser. There are more detailed insrtuctions at the old forum link though!

look for a file msglog.txt in your character directory. search it from the bottom up for "njerpez" to find the last one you encountered. You'll see a line like this:

(000000):h1hl:[@@]{025E00AC}     | the Njerpez warrior sighs once, then stays laying dead still.

025E means how far east you are from the left of the map. bigger numbers are more east, smaller are less east.
00AC means how far south you are from the north of the map. So this character of mine is in Seal tribe territory, very far north and fairly west.

Go to near where you think it was, doesn't matter if it's exact or not. Then drop something or pick something up or drink something so that it generates a message in the logs, and reopen the file and look at the last line. something like:

(3C5A98):j1hc:[:]{026200A0}      | You drop the branch.

So you horizontally you are at 262  and need to get to 25E so you need to go four squares west.
vertically you are at A0 and you need to get to AC so you need to go 12 squares south.

If you lose count or if you get it confused which one is horizontal and which is vertical (I'm only 80% sure i remembered the order right), just drop another branch and compare with your target.

you can find a calculator online that does hexadecimal with a search engine.

oh, there's a way to turn off the stretching:

Go into setup and where it says "logical resize", set it to "yes". No will make it stretched, "yes" will put a black border to the right and left so that it isn't stretched.

General Discussion / Re: Quest Frequency and Eligibility
« on: May 29, 2017, 05:44:17 PM »
When it's been 15 days since your last quest, go to a village.
Stay in the village for a full day. Try to talk to everybody but also hang out doing some crafting (making boards or whatever) because there are some quests that only one person in the village knows about and you won't get the quest unless you talk to that one person but if you stick around long enough, they'll come up to you and start talking.
Sleep in the village and then journey on to the next village, staying a full day in that village, etc.
I think, but am not sure, that you have to enter the village from the zoomed out map by walking into it; ifyou zoom in early and walk in on the zoomed in map then I think it doesn't work (but maybe that was fixed?)

If you miss a quest in a village you could go to dozens of villages without ever finding a quest because you have to wait until that one you didn't find expires, so make sure you stay in each village long enough to be sure that you didn't miss anything.

(and sometimes it takes even longer than that; i've got a character right now who has been a whole month without finding anything and spent most of the last few weeks sleeping in villages to no avail, so there might be something else i'm missing or just might be having bad luck. But usually these tips work!
