Discussion

  • The wiki needs a central location to discuss issues so people aren't bouncing all over the place. This page can be it.
  • Please remember to use ==section headers== for new topics of discussion.
  • When replying to a post, please also indent your messages by placing colon : in font of them to create pseudo-threading that is easier to read and follow.

Formatting

  • How do I redirect a photo to another photo? I had this issue when all the fish pages were trying to use their own image for their own fish even though all fish use the same graphic. It seems Phox fixed that, but I would like to know how he did it so I don't have to upload a separate image for something that uses the same graphic. --Coleslaw35 (talk) 05:17, 19 July 2016 (CEST)
  • @Coleslaw35: You just redirect them like any other page. Example on File:Trout.png:
#REDIRECT [[File:Fish.png]]
Documentation for redirects is found here: https://www.mediawiki.org/wiki/Help:Redirects ~ Phox (talk) 23:44, 19 July 2016 (CEST)
  • Thanks! I appreciate the help. --Coleslaw35 (talk) 03:54, 23 July 2016 (CEST)

Wikia Dumps

XML dumps of Wikia wikis are available via Special:Statistics.

They're useful for importing content from old wiki to here, having offline copies or backups.

At time of posting full archive is 864 KB compressed and a whopping 18 MB unpacked; current is 363 KB and 2 MB.

Info on dumps can be found here:

"Autoconfirmed" accounts (active 4 days or more) on Wikia can generate new dumps as needed. ~ Phox (talk) 20:54, 4 August 2016 (CEST)

Displaying info depending on game version

So there is an issue with knowing which version of the game whatever info on the page came from, which I think should be discussed, which is why I added this section.

See for example the "prices" page where there is info from multiple versions displayed.

Right now I have started adding version info as hover text inf format:

<span title="HOVER TEXT" >NORMAL TEXT</span>

Which gives you the following

NORMAL TEXT

Which I suggest people do from now. Downside is you can't tell from a glance while playing the game. Perhaps consider adding a dedicated hover extension for this to enable more features.

An alternative is to look into how the Dwarf Fortress wiki solves the problem with a top side selection box for major revisions of the game that displays unique pages. Not sure if it will work with the way this game is updated, but its worth a look.

Alternatively, instead of creating new pages for every page where there is a change, perhaps it's better to make tabs for each version where the information differ for the relevant page sections or table. Then people can select whatever tab they want displayed. This tough, I believe require installation of an extension that supports tabs. Like Tabber or Tabs. Which only the system administrator can do.

Thanks for starting this discussion. I agree that some indication of which version information was written for would be very good. I realized the same thing a few years ago when I was actively adding to this wiki, but was too lazy to start this discussion. (There wasn't really anyone else editing here at that time.) I think I added a disclaimer about which version the info was accurate for at least a couple of times.
The hover text is good, at least for pages like the "prices" page that have long tables of info and every little snippet of info is updated at different times, but like you said, it's not visible without hovering the cursor over the text. I think for pages and sections a disclaimer in the beginning with version number or date would be better. For example:
Written for version x.x
Written 13:05, 19 July 2020 (CEST)
When I though about this a couple years ago, I also though about how it's done in Dwarf Fortress wiki, but I don't think that would work here. I don't think the updates to the game are so major that a completely different namespace for new versions would be useful. Also, UrW's active community is so much smaller than DF's that there's not enough people to keep a DF style system updated. (DF's wiki has over 36 000 users, this one has 266.) Finally, I don't think there are that many players playing the older versions, at least players who'd need a wiki, and I'm not sure if the older versions are even available for download. So, I think there isn't a need to have the old info available, and that it's preferable to just update the pages to match the newest version. The old info can always be found from the page's history.

Math extension?

Several pages would benefit from having a math extension.

For example the price page where information like value per lbs is a function of two other pieces of information, adding automatic calculation of price would make updating price info more convenient and ensure higher accuracy as there is no chance that people would forget to update the prices.

Yes, this could be useful. I don't think the admin(s) visit the wiki too often, so, if you have any extension suggestions, it's probably better to ask in the forums, or send a message to Sami directly either by a pm in the forums or by email. Not sure if the admin (don't know who that actually is) gets email notifications for messages in their talk page here.
