update

minor

Reviewed diy_glossary.txt which had some survival mod entries like loop snare discussed above. Adjusted to match BAC tech levels as

loop snare -> {Cord} (fibres and split twigs should work now)
water skin -> {*cord} (need better but you have leather to make a skin anyway)

1202
IIRC loop snares are made with "cord" while "rope" is a bigger stronger object

checking...

diy_glossary

.Loop snare. [effort:0] [phys:hands,one-armed] *TRAPPING*   /10/   %15%   |-2|
{*Cord}      [remove]   'Cord'
// Tying equipment changed to Cord

That was carry forward from a survival mod. I think it needs to now be {Cord}

BAC Technology tree for that

{Tying Equipment}
{Cord}
{*cord}
{Rope}
{*rope}

Signatus, this is in my view, your mod so some of the decisions fall to you. Im providing input and joyful discussion.

>>>
checked on compressive strengths

Wood 6K - 7k psi
Iron around 34-36 psi

So they probably did make pull blocks out of metal.

Certainly the wooden pull board if used would need to deplete some wood to reflect damage.

>>>

Metal shape was meant as an universal intermediate stage so we could have a metal pull block made by using that

Making the holes need a rethink. I honestly thought (seems wrong now) the pull blocks were wood boards.

>>>

But pull blocks probably should be either iron or bronze.

The soft metal wires could use {*pull block} and iron wire using {Iron pull block}

>>>

I do like the idea of having a bronze-only tech stage

a modern day making own wire for jewellry making

mentionds gold etc can be pulled by hand

Block shown is of hard steel

example of modern day steel wire drawing block

IIRC good for gold, silver, brass, copper

Regarding BAC Iron Shape it was a generic recipe to assume making a billet (likely a rectangular shape) into "something" without quite being a finished product. This could be the S shape for pliers or a shape ready for use in wire working.... or a shape for decorative scroll work on a door.

>>>>>
On "spindle"

Name can be changed

For the general metal working I was thinking of the spindle being the twisted shape, before smoothing it through a hole.

This would be the type showing 4 corners making spiral twirls around the metal. These being pointy edges until smoothed by pulling.

>>>>>

On the material for the pull board: good question. I could be assuming wood simply by the name board. It might have to be metal. Wood is strong in compression and pulling wire through compresses the edge of the wood so it has some strength there. Again, not sure.

>>>>

On pliers:
I was thinking that we would have a bronze-smith who doesn't make any iron so would need bronze pliers, or at least a crude non-iron pliers.

So we don't intended to have an only bronze-smith then we go with the iron pliers.

Technically I can "pull" a wire by hand or with torque tricks but pliers would certainly help

>>>>

I like tte way to have the pull board degrade with small material consumption.

update

Fixed wrong bracket for .Carved board. under Lumber, reduced its production time from 2h (120m) to 90m to better fit price compared to fox board (see notes in lumber text)

Update

Delete your diy_BAC_Ironworking.txt

"Ironworking" menu being renamed "Metalworking" in preparation for including possible bronze etc recipes.

Specific keys within that menu removed (e.g. m and w) so that new recipes will sort naturally in keys.

1208
Just realized an issue on the first proposed .Pull Board. recipe. To make the auger and drill you need iron. So that .Pull Board. would only be fine for iron wire. If you wanted a bronze-only workshop the pull correction would have to be done differently.

Maybe still a pull board but using an axe and knife to make holes.

Or we do the non-iron wires without a pull board.

Modding / Re: Torch with no light?

I think Otzi's ember carrier might be one version of the always-with-you fire starting kit.

Currently AFAIK there is no way to have tools improve the chances of starting a fire. If there was then a fire carrier/ember carrier could be made with a spoilage rating of say 30 days (or whatever research suggests). Bow drills could help improve chances too.

Then again, that is all kind of already in the ability to start fire even when playing "Naked and afraid"

Good news,

BAC Ironworking has ALOT of room in the menu.

Ironworking could be changed to Metalworking to include precious metals from here.

Assuming you are down with that eventual inclusion for now I'd prefer we talk about the metalworking transition here. Mostly as we will go through a lot of recipe versions, updates and fixes that the general BAC users don't need just yet.

Naming magic might help keep the recipe count low.

Iron still varies needing charcoal and high heat.

Based on the new docs just post, amazing ones they are, Im pondering iron wire coming though a twist then pull process. Recipes being something like:

Carpentry:
Add .Pull Board.

Ironworking:

.Iron spindle.
{Iron shape} '+a chunking starter'
{* pliers} '+to twist tighter'
{* hammer}  '+hammer twist'
{charcoal}

.%name wire.
{%name spindle}
{Pull board} '+smoothing holes'
{Iron pliers} '+for gripping'

There would also need to be copper and maybe bronze versions of pliers.

I might have to rename the existing pliers. I think the pliers need to be similiar in strength to the material being pulled. For example bronze pliers might struggle with iron. (open to debate)

It's probably impossible to hammer iron into a small ring, lol

Wire making is done by drawing. This meaning to pull the metal through a hole. Then pull through a smaller hole. Repeat until you get the size of wire desired. To do this you would the board with holes and pliers.

BAC has lead in for doing this but I didn't put iron wire in (yet) as the only current use is chainmail. I would need to consume one of the two free menus for chainmail recipes and I want those available for custom modding.

A quick lead in set of recipes based on BAC would be something like

Pliers -> already in BAC

.Pull board. "Board"
{Knife} '+shaping and large pull hole'
{Auger} '+medium pull hole'
{Medieval drill} '+small pull hole'

.Pull wire.
{Iron shape} [remove] '+ingot into rough bar shape'
{Pull board} '+has different holes'
{Pliers} '+to grip during pulling'

Note that pulling, AFAIK, doesn't  heat the metal. Its raw muscle power. The board holes probably wear out over time too.

edit:
I might put the pull board in BAC as a "Holed board". I think carpentry has the space.

edit 2:
Magic naming coding might allow the .Pull Wire. to be coded to accept any sort of metal so long as it was a 'iron shape' 'bronze shape' 'X shape' etc to become 'X wire'

It could also have wonky though acceptable issues with plants, like herbs and berries, which AFAIK are generated when actually entering the tile on the local map. The terrain might change say from forest to open and the first set of plants being left there. Unless you terminated those plants then regenerated new plants.

And don't forget how when women put on metal armor it becomes bikini cups.  :P

Ahem.

Aside from that humor its a huge thing to code for limited in game affect. Yes, it would add realism but its only the extreme body sizes that have much issue with this.

Body armor has a bit of adjustment to it. I've made and used armor in the SCA medieval combat tournies. Most people can wear the average torso armor of some one else. The buckles are tighter or looser. There may be some limitation but it would be only a small skill penalty. There may be some small gaps but in fast flowing combat its harder to aim for those.

One time I even borrowed a thin ladies torso armor and squezed my male (then fit) profile in. The "corset" as we then called it restricted my breathing but I did fight in it during the practice class where I otherwise would have had to skip that day's class.

Suggestions / Re: Snake venom arrows
« on: January 24, 2019, 06:48:02 PM »
Although not ideal you could use the recipe system something like;

.Snake Venom. (10)
{Snake carcass}

.Poison arrow. (10)
{Snake venom} [remove]
{Arrow} (10) [remove]
[Point_Attack:9]

Then give the poison arrow much higher damage ratings. It wouldnt have the long term affect of poison. The damage would lend to higher penetration. Its the closest modding method I know of to pull this off.

The point_attack for a base arrow is 8 and the max listed in the modding section of the wiki is 9. So really its not going to help as much as a combat poison ought.

I end up with a many temporary shelters on my map that serve a similiar purpose. At least on the world map they show up. finding them on the wilderness map can be problematic.

Certainly there are a few why-to for clearing land like this.

As to how-to-code I'm still up in the air on if its possible and if so if the different immediate, wilderness and world maps would update. Mostly as they probably never expected to ever need updating.
