General Discussion / Creating map markers

How do I mark locations that have something I want to come back for? Villages have certain items, river ford or rapids, animal found here, etc

*Praying to the URW Old Man w/ grey hat*

Oh Great Spirit, my feet and I come to you asking for but a few socks and undergarments to be found in shops scattered throughout the land, be they linen or wool. Forgive me for not acquiring the one pair of footrags I saw when first I stepped into the wanderer's life.

Amen

Not bugs / Re: not installing on Ubuntu

yes. to all that, Koteko. In addition to that, with my reinstall, I encrypted the hard drive.

My passwords are strong. I write down whatever I am thinking at the time, like "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious", turn the paper upside down and convert that into a password that looks something like what I wrote. S becomes 5, i becomes !, a becomes v, b becomes 9 or q. Great passwords, not my dog's name, the birthday of a close relative, nothing I would even remember! So, I have to put the passwords in my phone as a contact because, even I would never remember that.

Sorry, forgot to mention, uninstalled Antivirus but still could not reinstall URW. Thinking about starting over with a fresh wipe and reinstall of Ubuntu Linux.

Not bugs / not installing on Ubuntu
« on: September 17, 2018, 09:18:24 PM »
Installed Ubuntu 18.04 on a borrowed Lenovo 4446-25U. Installed urw_3.51_amd64.deb using Software Install & played for over an hour. Installed Clam TK Antivirus. URW disappeared. Could not reinstall. The URW3-Linux folder is still there with many files. Downloaded urw_3.51_amd64.deb, still could not reinstall.

What happened and how do I fix it?

Suggestions / Wild boars can be very aggressive
« on: August 17, 2018, 11:01:38 PM »
Wild boars are real life monsters of legend. They are also very smart. They usually run first, hide, backtrack, conceal their tracks, have exceptional sense of smell, good hearing and poor eyesight. Herds are female, single boars are male, usually. During rutting season (November to January), males develop subcutaneous armor. They hunt small prey, eat almost everything, even plants poisonous to us.

A male, in rutting season, might attack without provocation. Females in a herd might defend their young if I stumbled into their midst.

Suggestions / Markers on zoomed-in map
« on: August 17, 2018, 09:28:36 PM »
I dropped all my items to hunt and afterwards, could not find where I dropped everything. Especially likely in wooded areas.

If I am not in a rush, I drop my items in an open area or I chop down trees around where I want to leave my things but, when the encounter finds me and pulls me into the zoomed in map, and it is wooded or crosses several areas, I have to rely on luck to find my things. Would that it were no so.

Another possibility; my footprints would be visible and would have a different appearance than all other footprints. Then, I could "retrace my steps" (a commonly heard phrase).

Thank you Sami and all who contribute to this adventure. I imagine so much must be going on that I can not know about to make it possible.

General Discussion / weight of dried fish vs dried meat
« on: July 21, 2018, 02:38:53 PM »
Why does dried salmon weigh more than dried bear? The whole salmon is dried and the bear meat is a chunk or slice of meat. BUT, they are similarly nutritious and less weight of bear is more filling than salmon. Not that it matters in URW gameplay but, there might be a RW reason behind this strange anomaly. Because, after all, URW is a caricature of RW.

I was joking or fantasizing about a spell to find coveted items. Besides, who would record an item finding ritual that it would become historical? I would think it would either be so basic and common knowledge or nonexistent

History

The earliest evidence of humans using wild flax as a textile comes from the present-day Republic of Georgia, where spun, dyed, and knotted wild flax fibers were found in Dzudzuana Cave and dated to the Upper Paleolithic, 30,000 years ago.[5][6][7] Flax was first domesticated in the Fertile Crescent region.[8] Evidence exists of a domesticated oilseed flax with increased seed size by 9,000 years ago from Tell Ramad in Syria.[8] Use of the crop steadily spread, reaching as far as Switzerland and Germany by 5,000 years ago.[9] In China and India, domesticated flax was cultivated also at least 5,000 years ago.[10]

Flax was cultivated extensively in ancient Egypt, where the temple walls had paintings of flowering flax, and mummies were entombed in linen.[11] Egyptian priests wore only linen, as flax was considered a symbol of purity.[12] Phoenicians traded Egyptian linen throughout the Mediterranean and the Romans used it for their sails.[13] As the Roman Empire declined, so did flax production, but Charlemagne revived the crop in the eighth century CE with laws designed to publicize the hygiene of linen textiles and the health of linseed oil.[14] Eventually, Flanders became the major center of the linen industry in the European Middle Ages.[14] In North America, flax was introduced by the colonists and it flourished there,[15] but by the early twentieth century, cheap cotton and rising farm wages had caused production of flax to become concentrated in northern Russia, which came to provide 90% of the world's output. Since then, flax has lost its importance as a commercial crop, due to the easy availability of more durable fibres.[16]

Are Switzerland and Germany close enough to Finland to count as speculative evidence?

I had too many dogs. They were eating more food than I could manage to supply. I felt bad about my virtual  dogs starving and I felt terrible about taking one of them out into the woods to politely ask for a set of dog fur mittens for some bear ritual I remember seeing.

Suggestions / Linseed, woolens, metal
« on: July 08, 2018, 06:07:09 PM »
I am shocked at how useful linseed plants are (linen cloth, linseed oil wood preservative and cloth water proofing, flax seed food). I really did not know flax, linen and boiled linseed oil all come from the same plant. Hemp has a little competition.

I search the UR world over for quality woolens. I would love caring for a herd of sheep (eating my turnips and getting eaten by lynx and bears despite my best efforts) so I could collect their wool and make my own MasterWork woolens.

Now, metal crafting is a monstrous can of worms in URW, mining, smelting, alloys, smithing and imbuing with  ritual blessings and powers, that is a lot of programming work. But, I would like a more reliable source of my most coveted weapons and armor.

Or, OMG! A spell to find where that one masterwork woodman's axe is in the world?! LOL, not to mention where I saw silver jewelry and an anthill to request an audience with The Great Man of The Forest.

Gameplay questions / Re: Any way to find lost items?
« on: July 04, 2018, 02:48:17 AM »
I somehow lost three axes someplace: masterwork splitting axe, masterwork carving axe and masterwork woodsman's axe. All in the same place, I am sure. But, where?

It bugs me, like a mosquito buzzing around in my mind. I will find that place.

I use custom markers MUCH more often now. I shamelessly save scum often after being lucky enough to create an archer that started out as a grandmaster then unlucky enough to drown finding out the game is realistic enough to have thin ice. Most of my old saves were deleted long ago.
