Gameplay questions / Re: Cursed Wolf Quest
« on: March 22, 2024, 08:02:58 PM »
If you don't mind the spoiler, this quest has been discussed in the Steam forum as well.

For some reason, I couldn't post the full link, so if you can go to the Steam Community page for Unreal World and go to the Gameplay Questions sub-forums, just search for the 'Of Wolf and Woman quest - help!". Someone managed to figure out how to feed the bread to the wolf.

Good luck!  :)

PS if anyone knows how I can post 'external links', I'll post it here to save the hassle.
i found the link and i'll post it for you! https://steamcommunity.com/app/351700/discussions/0/4309452818496529331/

And reading the discussion there, yeah, I think i did try that too actually, not with a bone but with some other meat but i tried a bunch of things and then i didnt know which one worked, because it didnt happen in front of me

When I did the quest, I threw the bread at the wolf and I got the confusion message like when you're feeding a dog, and I also left some on the gruond. I thought the wolf didn't eat it but later when i picked them up and counted them in my inventory, i realised i was missing a piece of bread, and so i tried going back to the village and I got the end of the quest.

masataka90, i found the wolf by wandering around in the zoomed in map. when i was close, i heard howling. i had a reindeer with me, which probably helped attract it, though it wasn't that worth it: my  reindeer did not survive. next time i will leave my reindeer at home!

Bug reports / Re: [3.83]"Pick up and wield" function doesn't work.

What keyboard layout do you use to play URW? Is it an English US layout or some other one? I remember a long time ago I had a different issue with Hungarian keyboard layout that Sami had to fix for me.

When talking to the woodsman who tells you to kill the wolf, the conversation doesn't have a goodbye option. Isntead the "Okay, okay, I heard you" option is there to be selected in an infinite loop.

You can, of course, hit escape to get out of the conversation.

I'm glad you were able to get it working! The path you took was cleaner than the one on the forum anyway.

It's okay! Forums are async  :)

It looks like you're not missing any libraries that urw is trying to load, so something else is wrong. It's working for me on Manjaro.

The root cause looks to be here: https://wiki.libsdl.org/SDL2/SDL_RWseek

Quote
SDL_RWseek() is actually a wrapper function that calls the SDL_RWops's seek method appropriately, to simplify application development.

Prior to SDL 2.0.10, this function was a macro.

So my guess is that the game is expecting SDL >= 2.0.10 and you have SDL < 2.0.10, or visa versa.

I did some googling, and found someone who was having this issue, but for a different game, ADOM, and there's a reply there saying that someone on Mint was able to get it to work after following the instructions there: https://www.gog.com/forum/adom_ancient_domains_of_mystery/problem_launching_version_334_on_ubuntu_2004 -- I'd be cautious about downloading anything from some random user's github -- instead download the libs from a trusted linux repository to the game directory and then adding them to the $LD_LIBRARY_PATH shell variable sounds promising. https://www.gog.com/forum/adom_ancient_domains_of_mystery/problem_launching_version_334_on_ubuntu_2004/page1

Since Mint is Debian based, an Ubuntu or Debian version of the library should be okay.

I'm not sure how the steam version works exactly, probably the files are in different locations than on my computer but the way of working should be the same:

Code: [Select]
file $(which urw)
/usr/bin/urw: Bourne-Again shell script, ASCII text executable
file $(which urw3-bin)
/usr/bin/urw3-bin: ELF 64-bit LSB pie executable, x86-64, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked, interpreter /lib64/ld-linux-x86-64.so.2, BuildID[sha1]=de4cf685333bb53e3cda57c9ee122573ce947471, for GNU/Linux 4.4.0, stripped

so /usr/bin/urw is the shell script which sets stuff up and then launches the binary, so you can edit it to add some more setup, and that's where you'd add the path with the libraries you downlodaed to LD_LIBRARY_PATH.

what is the output of
Code: [Select]
ldd /home/helena/Desktop/Stuff/Games/Steam/steamapps/common/UnRealWorld/urw3-bin
or if that doesn't work:
Code: [Select]
ldd $(which urw3-bin)

Occasionally you might find fish splashing in the water even at locations with ice cover. This happened if the water froze again after the spawning had already started in the open water.

For migrated characters who were experiencing this before migration, there can briefly still be fish spawning under the ice, but it went away on its own while i was watching it, when my cow fell through some nearby ice, I think that triggered a check because the spawning stopped and didn't start again. So I think this is fixed :)

if you examine it with 'l' does it says base rock or does it say crag? if it says crag, it won't work.

Also I've found that there's some luck to it, some spots are better than others. It's easier in a rapids tile or a ford where there are lots of these, i can try a different one each night until it works

I think larger body parts are more important but for warmth, I'd make mittens even out of your only shirt -- you will still get some benefit from the shirt because not all the fabric is used, and if your hands get too badly frostbitten, you won't be able to use tools or hold weapons and that can make it very hard to survive until they heal

Trading hundreds of boards at one go isn't often plausible because since they are too much of a burden to carry around, but nevertheless the said exploit exists.
This is fixed now, so that the villagers will check the necessity of offered items also during the first trade.

Fixed - persists in 3.82.
The usual way this was exploited was: chop some trees near the village, haul the trunks to a house in the village, create the boards, carry the items you want to buy to the spot with the boards. until all boards are in your inventory: pick n boards up, where n is the max you can pick up at a time (depends on player's weight), now you are carrying maybe 1000 lb of lumber. finally pick up the items you want to buy, chat with a villager.

Perhaps if you are already overloaded on weight you should not be allowed to pick up any more items.

Suggestions / Re: Make it easier to find quests + add more quests
« on: December 29, 2023, 06:16:07 AM »
I think the timer is 14 days not 15, but if you're not keeping track of what time of day the quest appeared then 13 days ago but it was just before midnight then and now it's only just after midnight then that might seem like 14 days to the player if you're just subtracting but the game may count that as 13 still. So aiming for 15 accounts for rounding errors.

I think also if you enter a village that you visited less than a week ago, there won't be a quest there yet. I put a light lever trap near the villages I visit so that the game will keep track of how long it's been since i went there and try to rotate through the ones that have items I might want to buy.

In practice what I do is I spend an entire day at a village, to give the "personal problems" quest giver time to find me and I talk to a few people in case there's a publicly known quest, and then I move on to another village if I'm really seeking quests, otherwise I try again next week.

For some of my characters, this leads to doing a quest almost every 2 weeks, but some of my other characters only get a quest every few months -- probably because there's a quest giver that I'm not encountering somehow, they're not all in villages, some you can only get from the random guys you run into in forests, which I usually try not to run into if I can help it because random guys can be robbers, and then it takes a while for the quest to expire and new quests to be generated again. I think there can be a few active quest givers at a time but the first one that you notice is the one that sticks and then you have to wait 2 weeks for new ones to be generated? I'm not 100% sure, the mechanics are pretty complicated.

Not bugs / Re: Crops not staying planted?
« on: December 29, 2023, 06:06:43 AM »
In addition to the animals already mentioned, elk and reindeer eat some crops, too. I put all different kinds of traps around my field, in a trap fence -- the fence doesn't deter the small animals but if there's a trap for them nearby they'll often find their way into it anyway, based on your trapping skill

Are there any rabbits around?

General Discussion / Re: Did anyone ever see a seal for once?
« on: December 20, 2023, 03:31:03 AM »
I use traps, I put a bear trap right next to the water, no bait. I can't find it in news.txt but I remember when they were added back in 2014, it was discussed on the forums (probably the old forums, I think that was before the move) and I remember Sami said that he didn't want seals to be attracted to the player's food and inclined to steal from them, so they're not attracted by baits either. But it was a long time ago and I could misremember or things could have changed since then.
