Suggestions / Re: Ambient wildlife
« on: February 12, 2021, 11:30:34 AM »
However, something I enjoy in UrW is just the feeling of wandering in the wilderness, so I think I'd also enjoy seeing birds that aren't what you'd call "useful" to me as a player, but would add to the ambience of the game, such as songbirds.

Well, I personally never feel forced to actually make use of any ‘useful’ creature. And I guess nothing really does force a player. A bird? Nice, let it fly. An elk, in case I've got enough meat and fur? Nice, have a safe walk, my horned brother, may the spirits help you to avoid predators and hunters.

If I'll ever get tired of a ‘creature spotted’ prompts (which feels to me completely fitting the game's spirit), I'll toggle [TASK_ABORT_ANIMALS:YES] option in urw_ini.txt

More ambience would be good. I think though, that's a lot of effort for the team, and pretty long time to wait for us players. But afaik, @Night is currently working on a project with some ambience-related features planned, discussed here.

Oh, spirits. Wish I could try aaall of this! Mustikka-ruispuuro looks espeсially tempting.

@Buoidda thanks a lot, that's an amazing code! Saved it. My first DIY mod btw, hehe.

Only replaced short with 1ft to avoid the text break interface border (running UrW in 800x600 borderless window).

Suggestions / Re: Additional “trophies”
« on: February 11, 2021, 10:14:43 PM »
However, playing with human skulls then again doesn't quite fit the world. The dead, and their parts, were feared rather than collected.
I suppose having such an ability would nevertheless be of good. Just in terms of more player's freedom, and more various and immerse roleplaying.

And that won't inevitably ruin the historical accuracy. Say, if character messes with human remains, he can be punished by spirits in some way: like, a bear will appear and savage him, or some of character's items will vanish during his sleep, or there will be no hunting luck for a long time, or his house will suddenly burn...

And would someone still want to play a wicked character, it will be appropriately harder. Way harder, I guess, but also way more immersive. We've already got cannibalism, so why not.

Btw, does any eldritch consequences happen? Seems I never noticed. Also, not quite sure if it fits the world, to sacrifice a cut of human flesh to spirits and ‘feel at ease’. Does it? Or should this go to Bug reports/Suggestions forum?

Of course, I'm quite possible, as a player, to misunderstand things, or perhaps to perceive the game's lore, unconsciously mixing it with my own vision. So, would be great to know how exactly the world's creators mean this.

Gameplay questions / Re: Any way to find lost items?
« on: February 11, 2021, 09:26:48 PM »
Just in case someone doesn't know, it is possible to drop items while on wilderness map and have them visible.
Spoiler: show

And when dropping stuff while zoomed-in, leaving a mark on F6 map really helps (appliable to the first case as well). After you've finished your business, just go back to the marked location, climb a tree, scroll mouse wheel down or hit Ctrl+‘-’ to zoom out, and you'll most probably spot your items at once (to make it easier, avoid dropping them behind trees). In rare cases, like when you drop something at the very edge of a location, it can take you two or three climbings.

Not bugs / Re: Dogs eating priorities
« on: February 11, 2021, 08:55:11 PM »
I thought of reporting it just this morning. Sure, dogs should eat meat first. At the moment it doesn't matter what do you put on a tile first, meat/fish or bone, your dog is gonna eat bone and ignore anything else.

UPD: It has just given me a thought of eating priority list just being sorted alphabetically (so the order is %animal name% bone — bream  — burbot — %animal name% cut — %another fish name%). Going to test it one of these days.

Also, bones are waaay too durable. Didn't do exact measures, but it feels like four elk bones is enough, for a regular dog, to chew for at least a week or two. While meat seems to be a bit less satiating than it should be.

Gameplay questions / Re: Are Map tiles eventually cleared?

I'd think Sami would like a copy of the save that was broken/corrupted by manual map maintenance. I've never had issues with it, since it was added several versions ago. And I use it at least everytime when ground colors change.
It's been a while... Most probably it was not even 3.62, because as far as I recall, I wasn't a forum member yet. I suppose it was version 3.5*. No backups left, unfortunately.

Stories / Re: Skervaldr, the Remi hunting trial
« on: February 11, 2021, 07:50:56 PM »
@Skervaldr, DeepL is neural network based, so it can fail sometimes too. I've used to write the story first in Russian, and then translate it with DeepL a couple sentences at a time, and also check doubtful pieces using dictionaries (yep, that's a pretty hard way, it's just me obsessed with trying to write closest to perfect, hehe).

If you're new to UrW, it may be wise to complete the both training game courses without mods, just to get to know the game and discover all gameplay mechanics. Because before you develop a working survival tactics, you're probably going to lost a good dozen characters... Just suggesting, as completing those cources taught me to avoid really stupid ways to die and to last far much longer.

I noticed you to post them in a diary format, posting new entries for different days in the same thread ::)
Yeah, I like it that way. However, there's no default format for stories, so nothing forces you to follow my or someone's else way.

Btw, when are you planning to stream UrW? would be about Fjara of the Owl tribe?
Can't say for sure, got a lot of stuff to care about. Definitely starting before this month ends, that's all I can promise. BTW, if you want to watch someone playing UrW, check out this, this and this YouTube channel.

Gameplay questions / Re: 3.63 New fire mechanics
« on: February 11, 2021, 07:17:10 PM »
I did it, and to my surprise, was stolen by villagers.
I guess this should be considered a fee for using their sauna. Honestly, the whole village can't take a proper bath becouse of some stranger smoking his meat in there!

I wonder if that 'clearing zoom files'-trick could be used to flush out modded, outdated flora? (Flora with different specifications than those found in current flora*.txt files.)
I would recommend not to mess with save files (or even manual map maintenance, @rudy). Without a backup, at least. I once got my save broken after hitting 7 (can't recall though, was it 3.62 of 3.63). And once I played with ZOOM*.DAT files, and somehow literally wiped two settlements out of the world.

AFAIK, the game performs map maintenance automatically, when it's really needed.

Off-topic / Re: Best music to listen while playing UrW
« on: February 11, 2021, 02:43:28 PM »
Just remembered of a Poland band Stworz. Guys play atmospheric/pagan black metal, mixed with neofolk. Albums Na trzy strony Słońca and Słońcakres, as opposed to Thulêan Mysteries, makes me perceive the game's world as a significally lighter and fairier place.

It feels the best when your character is busy with any peaceful activity like building, fishing, agriculture, etc. A good way to pass an hour, being completely calm and easy.

General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?

Another try. No food, no luck, 15% starved. Felt so desperate that killed and butchered an innocent adventurer.

Spoiler: MMMM TASTY • show

That was so good... But spirits punished Fjari with madness for her misdeed, and a couple days later she killed herself.

So, after a pretty long pause I started a new Owl-tribe huntress character (like usual, hehe). Found a nice place to live for a month or two in order to gather meat and furs and stuff supply before starting to wander around the world. A couple weeks later spotted wolf tracks nearby, set a trap. The next day a wolf got into it, and I hurried to kill it. But I forgot about an important fact... a wolf is never alone.

I hope you enjoyed my little story and it inspire your next ones . ::)

Please tell me if you want how can I improve my gameplay and storytelling, since I am noob yet hehe or demand more stories if you want and I'll to do few more may be with drawings too or other images than the screenshots if you like it.
Good story! And it's always joy to see new storytellers and tales here. Especially with drawings! Write more, if you're really into it, no reason to quit.

As for gameplay, I would suggest you using traps. Even if your next chatacter's trapping skill won't be as great as Skervaldr's had been, there's always chance to catch something.

As for writing, you can start with re-reading the text before posting, and fixing misspelled words :) . I've noticed some. You can also use DeepL to make translating your thoughts into English easier (however, it supports a pretty limited amount of languages at the moment).

As an example of well-written stories (or at least ones I do like a lot) you can check out Jutta's Tale: The Bog Mother, Jutta's Tales: The Story Teller, Bloodied Snow. Or maybe read mine, hehe.
