Suggestions / Re: Groundworking and levelling terrain for building
« on: October 26, 2021, 05:51:45 PM »
I agree that building sites would have been carefully selected for flat and level terrain.  Building on a slope is a huge headache and I'd never do it if there was any way it could possibly be avoided.  Almost all the land is unclaimed so we can choose any location for our cabins.  Also, I can't remember seeing any NPC building crossing terrain boundaries.
Careful site selection is advisable, but for example the starting scenario of unfinished cabin; it often spawns on slope. Villages and settlement tiles of mostly flat ground with occasional single slope up at an edge (unless bordering hill/mountain tile) won’t be a problem.

I think if any change was made in the game, it would be that player constructed buildings should not be allowed to be constructed on sloped terrain.

Unless there’ll be added an alternate option for palisade/barn wall building from log wall, prohibiting slope building would remove building predator/invader safe(-ish) homesteads.
I’d personally prefer the slope building as is.
IF anything, enable multistory building, for hill fort towers, to partial lower floor on slopes and so on. (That’d require adding controls to look up and down “z-levels”... sounds like a lot of work)

Make sure to sell off any clothing that you don't absolutely need, especially Fine/Masterwork quality ones since AFAIK their only benefit is a higher bartering value.

Armor, at least warmth values are affected by quality. (Or used to at least in 3.51 or so. I haven’t really bothered with minutiae in a while)

So does spoiled meat/fish work as a bait, or does it have to be fresh?
Uncooked / non-cured spoiled meat, fish, and fat all work as bait. Spoiled roasted/boiled/cured meat, fish or fat won’t work as bait.

Village stocks are generated on first visit, so finding an unvisited village could prove fruitful in acquiring yarn.

General Discussion / Re: How far do you travel at start?
« on: October 11, 2021, 05:28:55 PM »
Sometimes not at all. I start my toons in Spring and need to get some firewood, shelter et cetera for the possibly lethally frigid nights.
I like to set a camp by lake or river, get basic survival things done; shelter, LLTs nearby, waterhole, firewood. Fish, and/or hunt for food and hides. Often fish, hide work or make crafts end of the day. Things that don’t need daylight.

With few days/week food supply, start looking for villages, and homestead locations. At this point, the traveling might take the character across the map. Can’t wait too long for this trekking though, lakes and rivers will thaw and that gets annoying, fast.

Skerry, or rock in water, in rapids or sea tile is safe for storing almost anything. Ravens can still nibble foodstuffs.
Regular rivers and lakes do freeze.. then anyone/thing could walk right to your stash.

But having duplicates (tools, weapons, armor&clothes) at various alternative locations is good option.

Just finished my cabin, and while proudly admiring it I noticed for the first time the address:

Appopera, or "Gapingrear".

 :(
:o

Hopefully that’ll scare robbers from approaching...

Fire starting was previously under SURVIVAL skill (as was building shelter and cutting hole in ice IIRC)
I recall them being reallocated under COMMON (hole in ice might be under FISHING) mostly.
If memory serves, it was done to simplify the early game. After few seasons, the skill was high enough.

As for guaranteed fire or nearly so, using any era correct method is prone to fail due fatigue, rain (dev plans also list wet clothes, firewood; which can stump ones fire starting)

Flint is NOT common in the area, other chert, and various suitable stones exist. I’m not certain the game needs to add different minerals either (that’s Tarn Adams’ game territory)

So in essence the fire starting kit would be “2 branches” or improved fire starting kit “rock and any metal item” and then one would need to collect dry lower spruce twigs, bitch bark, hanging lichen, or dried bast pulp from alder/willow/rowan/etc

(Firestarting is easy with dry kindling, regardless of the heat source. And nigh impossible with wet kindling)

I’ve experienced robbers pulling items from adjacent tiles. But I’ve not witnessed random woodsmen, traders pulling items.

Visit every village and settlement.

Collect every type of masterwork knife and axe.

Run organized raids to Njerpez land.

Grandmaster (non-physical; climbing, swimming, stealth, skiing) skill. (No spoofing, no throwing swords, et cetera)

Play as Koivulainen or islander, in anywhere a random start places you.

I need rods(ineedcords) cabin network is a good project. I often do few winter locations and few summer locations. With stocked shelters on the way.

Not that much back actually, the previous versions are/were on the old Invision forum. I recall Erkka posted another repository too few months back (maybe around April-May?)

As (if, for other subscribers) you’ve bought the Steam version of the game, you can contact Sami/Erkka for “Lifetime supporter” status on this forum. Then simply download the standalone version you need. And keep your Steam setup as is.

The post was on old version, back in February. Kicking fences doesn’t work anymore.

Might want to compress and send Sami the savegame for analysis.
