General Discussion / Re: Borders of Unreal World
« on: November 07, 2017, 11:10:50 PM »
For story purposes, let's say that the Unreal World is an enclosed spiritual realm, a loop of infinite time within a defined area of space (the space where the spirits are able to express their power to maintain the loop). The humans within are able to humbly live their lives in this distant, infinitely recurring past, and the spirits' energies are kept strong by their worship.

Love paddles as weapons cause you carry one more often, but shovels would be way more badass improvised weapons, all three attack characteristics, at least for the metal ones...

The lengthy story of trying should go in stories, but the challenge itself belongs here, as do any other challenges people can think of...

Gameplay questions / Re: Bow accuracy
« on: November 02, 2017, 01:50:39 PM »
As a side note, I find that javelin accuracy is quite well done, and realistic considering it was a worthwhile thing to do with your time back then. At a 90% plus skill, you can not expect to ever score more than a glancing blow at the outside edges of it's range, and accuracy declines significantly beyond about 7 tiles. Not impossible out to ten, but again, realistic glancing blows, and a waste of a javelin in any circumstance. However, at close range, within 5 tiles, accuracy is not a problem, and you can expect very significant stopping power in comparison to regular arrows, as well as a saved turn equipping a melee weapon when you don't have to remove your bow seperately.

Infinite candy, three one dollar energy drinks, two packs of pall malls, three grams of skunk, one six-pack of 9%ers and I've got a beautifully made cabin on the Unreal World and new bags under my eyes. The girlfriend blacked out and woke up in her car sans glasses and keys, only to find them in the bushes near the door from a prior attempt at ingress into her dwelling. Anyone else have a good halloween?! :D

I live right by the US/Canada border, and we've been getting nice harsh winters lately. I love driving in the snow, cause there aren't very many other cars on the road, and going slow let's you enjoy the scenery. Pretty much don't prepare though, we sometimes have super mild winters, so you feel silly when you don't need any of your preparations.

My best concert experience is being at the front of the crowd at Mayhem Fest in Auburn, Washington for 3 Inches of Blood when I was 15, right by their bass stack, so I had my hearing blown out for a couple days. Totally worth it, and made me pick up bass guitar.

I just found out a few weeks ago that we've had a rennaissance faire here for the last ten years, but they don't advertise it publically at all. Would've been all over that shit.

I believe I noticed something similar, I'm not sure how intentional of a difference it is... but to me it seems like you spawn with more armor and lower quality/less desirable weapons. For example, just my most recent one who specialized in spears and axes with a point each in unarmed and clubs as well. Spawned with a hard staff, a rough hand axe and a rough kaumo knife, but much more importantly for the start condition, a fur overcoat and mail mittens, with enough other clothes for decent armor coverage. On second thought, that was winter... which I don't frequently do, but might have made the difference that I noticed.

Found on the corpse of a skilled and well armored Njerpez that nearly killed one of my two companions in the dark, was an object called a "hunting horn" that has no encyclopedia entry and is listed under tools in the inventory screen. I have never seen this object before and am afraid to use it for anything.  Before I try it, has anyone else found one of these and noticed any effects? I would hope it is some kind of ritualistic item for boosting hunting success in the same manner as the early morning Hunting Incantation.

I only even heard of roguelikes in the last five years or so, but before I started this one as my go to, I cut my teeth on the android game Pixel Dungeon, which is much closer to the original Rogue than unreal world. It was open sourced, so now you can find many different versions on the app store, but the original always does it for me. 2d sprites, with random spell scrolls and potions, and a really tough hunger management system.

I think as a reward they should make you an honorarary citizen of the village, and able to perform any task (other than theft) that they would normally be angry about, such as cutting down their trees and harvesting their herbs/produce.

As huge as the reward is, it's only as good as the wealth of the village that gives it to you. I did two robber quests in a row for the same village in Kaumo, but had taken everything of value from them (except their food, saving it for needier times) at three quarters through the first reward.

That's fair, battle axes are ~5 or 6 pounds, so the extra shaft and spear point wouldn't be too much extra weight from that. I was going more from a 7 pound kaumo spear as the base for extra reach, with a very heavy woodsman axe type blade for the additional weight. I assume yours is more realistic, which is the point of this.

Worst comes to worst, this is probably a pretty easy mod, though I personally shy from such things. It'd be cool if someone made a package of interesting, in-timeframe weapons for one of the smithing set ups.

I didn't really want to say anything cause it seems quite an old elephant in the room, but this is part of avoiding swords as weapons for me... Halberds forever, heavy two-handed weapon using spear skill with better edge than point damage. Like 10 or 12 pounds, excellent attack bonus, somewhat poor defense bonus, and only available from foreign traders (maybe equipped by very rare and powerful Njerps). Alternatively to the halberd, a war hammer or great-club, any kind of large, traumatic, bludgeoning instrument. I like keeping bastard swords, they seem plausible as longer, Frankish-import Viking swords; very exotic weapons for the area indeed, but certainly not unrealistic for the (Viking) foreign traders to have. What else would they spend all of OUR furs on?

Edit: Addressed by OP, so I'll say that I only think they should be rare among Njerps due to their likely-quite-high value, and potential overall increase in the opponent's combat ability.

(presuming one lives)

This is the important part for me, I make no qualms about essentially playing this game wrong, but that's the best part about it! I pretty much just pick fights with anyone Spiritually safe to do so with, pile up the loot and farm animals, trade for food til I have the basic smokehouse and trap fence, and see how long I can go before I drown or something else stupid (of me). I pretty much don't die in fights anymore, I used to easily and early with better set up characters, so it's worth practicing. My one save scummed character was a really great way to experiment, kept testing the same situation for better and better outcomes until I could handle it safely anytime it comes up.
