Without knowing for certain, I think any kind of precipitation is sufficient. You can tell if a log is a "cut during rain" one or a "dry cut" one by whether it stacks with a "dry cut (or rain cut) one. Thus, if you have two logs that do not stack, one of them is suitable and the other one is not.

I too never knew that.  Is that why I get trunks that don't stack?  I've only ever had 2 different stacks of trunks.  I also haven't paid attention to how/when I get unstackable logs.

Modding / Use of dried/smoked meat/fish in cooking

I'm starting to dabble in cooking modifications.  I've been able to craft edible recipes and embed them in sub-menus (Thanks for the tutorials and existing mods out there).  I've also created cooking recipes for dried berries, mushrooms, and herbs.

However, I want to use dried/smoked meat cuts and fish for recipes.  Is there any way for recipes to refer to general dried/smoked meat/fish as it currently does to {Raw meat} or {Raw fish}?  (Note: I also eventually want to use dried berries, dried mushrooms, and dried herbs (seasoning) in recipes.) 

For example, if I want to use dried stag cuts for a recipe, the following don't work:
     {Dried meat}    #1# [remove] [bake]
     {Dried cut}    #1# [remove] [bake]

Similarly, smoked trout doesn't work in the following:
     {Smoked fish}    #1# [remove] [bake]

...BUT, the following commands do work with dried stag cuts and smoked trout, respectively:
     {Dried stag cut}    #1# [remove] [bake]
     {Smoked trout}    #1# [remove] [bake]

I assume the same limitation exists for salted meat/fish.  Would I need specific recipes for all the different dried/smoked meat/fish permutations (e.g. Dried Bear Cut Recipe X, Dried Elk Cut Recipe X, etc.)?  Is there recipe text that generally refers to any permutation of the dried/smoked meat/fish possibilities?

I don't think 1 is in the works... (http://www.unrealworld.fi/urw_development.html) ...based on the development notes.  Specifically, I can't find any mention that an update will feature the ability to buy the "big sheep" specifically instead of whichever sheep the seller decides to offer up first.  Am I missing that in the development page?

Suggestions / Buying Animals

Can the buying animals process be changed to address: 1) buying a specific size of livestock animal from among the available animals for sale, and/or 2) buying animals in bulk?
  • If a village has multiple livestock animals of the same type of animal for sale but I only want one specific sized animal, it seems to be random which animal I am actually buying.  I'd really like to either A) know which animal I am trying to buy or B) be able to choose which animal I want to buy. 

    A) Could the dialog specify I'm trading for the "small sheep" or the "big dog" or the "bull" (referring to the normal  bull).  Right now, I can't seem to find any pattern as to which animal I am actually buying at a time and the NPC dialogue doesn't clarify either.  I've tried to determine if proximity to the bought animal or selling villager influence which animal is for sale and I can't seem to find a pattern.  For example, if the village has 5 sheep and 3 dogs for sale, could the dialog proceed as follows: ""What kind of animals [do] you need? We have a few to sell around here. 1-Small Sheep, 2-Big Dog"  The player would then bid and trade OR reject the sale offer and start a new trade dialogue to bring up a new list of animals... 1-Sheep, 2-Small Dog

    B) Could the animal dialog actually list all the types/sizes of animals for sale not just by the animal type but also the animal size?  For example, if a village has 5 sheep (1 big, 2 normal, and 2 small) and 3 dogs (1 big, 1 normal, and 1 small) and I only want to buy the one big dog, then it seems random which dog I actually get the opportunity to buy at a time.  There have been instances when the big dog in this scenario is bought first, second, or third.  Could the dialog actually break down to: "What kind of animals [do] you need? We have a few to sell around here. 1-Ram, 2-Small Sheep, 3-Sheep, 4-Big Sheep, 5-Small Dog, 6-Dog, 7-Big Dog"
  • Can I buy multiple animals in one trade?  Right now, I need to buy multiple animals one-at-a-time.  Can I add the animals to a tally and then trade for them all at once?  This would allow the player to have more efficient trades and allow higher value items to be used for trades.  Now, a battlesword is worthless when trading for animals because it is so valuable.  But if I could buy animals in bulk, that sword might then become very handy if I could use it to buy a bull and cows/dogs.

Some of the slower warriors held bows as they chased me.  I knew I would be killed if they could hit me, so I tried to keep other raiders in-between them and me as I ran.  Eventually, I stumbled through a grove and into a field planted with barley and peas.  By this time, only 4 breathless raiders had kept up with me.  I slowed my flight but had to stay far enough away that they wouldn't try to shoot me with their arrows.  I led them right into a Reemi village that rallied to my defense and killed the filthy Njerpez.  Unfortunately, a village sage was killed in the fight, but my revenge was started...


I sorted through the Raider's weapons and gear to find a scimitar and roundshield.  Leaving all their heavy armor, I crept back through the field, grove, and hid in a spruce mire next to the Njerpez camp.  When I saw Kaipia the idiot through the trees, I threw a rock at him and ran back through the forest.  Rather than call the rest of the raiders, Kaipia followed me alone into the forest.  He chased me through the trees and grove until he was breathless.  I then hid and crept until I was behind him and killed him with a blow to the back of the head...


He died loudly and I could hear the rest of the party crashing through the trees to find me.  I hid a short space away when they found his body.  I then followed them through the forest and drew them into another chase.  One-by-one, I wore them down until they were breathless and killed them.  Thankfully, Rautia was the last Njerpez left.  He saw my sword dripping with blood and he tried to run away like the coward he was.  I ran the weakling down and killed him with a slash to the back of his head...


As I ate and recovered from the fight, I gathered their equipment into the cabin that was my home.  As I sorted through their things, I saw my mother's comb and cried bitter tears...


Rautia must have brought the comb with him in his pride.  This comb is my most prized possession and I will always carry it as a talisman as I seek vengeance.  I believe my family's spirits were sending me a message.  I thought killing these demon raiders would ease my pain and satisfy my revenge.  But I was wrong.  I am still hollow with my grief and loss.  I cannot stay in the shell of my family's homestead.  The memories won't let me sleep in peace.  So I have moved into one of the cabins in the nearby village.  I will try to repay them for their sage's sacrifice for me.  Then the Njerpez will pay for all the wrongs they have done to me.  I will eradicate them, root and branch, so no other innocent children are taken into slavery.

Part 1: The Story Begins...
I try not to remember much from my time as a child, but some memories won't go away; a smiling woman with long golden braid who would comb my hair with her precious bronze comb decorated with a running horse; a huge man with scarred hands and a booming laugh who would throw me into the air and catch me as I laughed; brothers who would bring a brace of grouse or string of fish back for dinners; a large milk cow in the yard.  I mostly remember light, warmth, and love.  Then the demon raiders from the east came at night with fire and iron.  Isa yelled for me to get help from a near village, but I didn't even make it to the trees before they caught me.  Terror and my burning house... that is all I allow myself to remember of that night... my family... gone.  Even now, I am consumed by loss and rage as I think of what was taken from me...



As the sun rose the next morning, I was put on a raft and taken far away from all I knew.  I was made a slave to those demon raiders, the Njerpez.  I secretly took care of my ways, vowing to avenge my family's spirits.  One day, I saw a warrior's wife using my mother's bronze comb and I flew into a rage.  I was punished, but I knew who had destroyed my life.  I slowly learned the names of those raiders who killed my family, and they became my list... Kaipia, Ruuri, Kalevi, Kaipia, Hirvo, and Rautia.  I learned, watched, and grew large, like my father.  I banked my fury and nurtured my hate for these men as I slaved for these Njerpez.

One evening, these 6 were boasting to some of the younger warriors about a raid a few years ago into the Reemi.  They boasted of their power as they described sneaking through the forest up to my home.  Rautia laughed as he showed my mother's prized bronze comb and pointed toward me as I tended the evening fire as a sample of the wealth they took by their might.  The young warriors lusted the glory and wealth and they began that night to return to the Reemi for another raid.  I convinced Kaipia I would be a help to locate the villages that surrounded my family's homestead, and the fool agreed.  I was the only slave taken to care for a raiding party of 10. 

Once we landed the rafts on the shore, the raiders crept through the forest back to my homestead's clearing.  They repaired 2 of the cabins that were partially standing and started to prepare for their raids into the nearby villages.  As they were checking their gear, I realized I was alone in the middle of the camp and took my chance as I ran...

Several characters ago, I had a bruiser that lived in Njerpez territory.  A few pointers based on your questions:
  • Take over a village and clear out the natives.  This becomes your base for raiding and a place to store your loot.  My character took over a fortified village that bordered the southern sea.  There was a well in the village (a water tile), so I rebuilt the houses into a compact settlement with a few animal pens.  I surrounded the base with a pit trapped fence.  No one ever came to visit or assault my base.  But I felt safer.  (Note: After so much loot piles up, being near the coast allows an easy multi-day punt trip to the southern cultures to trade.)

  • This is a risky strategy.  It is very hard to control how many villagers you "pull" and you might have a challenge hiding or losing those villagers who pursue you.
         A. If you want to attempt these assault, I recommend you do it during the winter at night.  Creep near Njerpez villages and alert a Njerpez villager to draw them away.  Try to pick them off, but the villagers might not follow you as you get further and further away.
         B. An alternative strategy to clear a Njerpez Village is to sneak near the village and find a building that has a 1x2 interior dimension.  Then, run into that building and hold off the villagers as they assault you one at a time.  If you back yourself into that building, you should be able to limit your opponents to one assaulting at a time.  You'll need to rest by dodging or not attacking (but do counter) to prevent you from getting too tired.  Additionally, if you knock one opponent unconscious, a second opponent will step into the same square as the downed villager.  If that unconscious villager recovers, then you have 2 villagers stacked on top of each other, both attacking you, but you can't pick which opponent you attack.  After a while, the villagers get tired and then exhausted and it is easier to mop up at the end. 

  • I know of no way to attract an NPC from the map screen.

On a related note, has everyone ever successfully (and intentionally) trapped multiple Njerpez?  Do you think a series of pit traps would work like this (X=fence and O=trap):

I do know you can stuff raw meat into a skin/bag and then roast the entire skin/bag.  You then get a mass of cooked meat and the skin/bag disappears.

...There was too much to carry or load on his bulls with all his other provisions.  So Paimen shredded their clothes to cords and bandages and set back into the unknown wilderness toward Kaumo.

Later that same day, Paimen realized he misintrepreted the spirits and gave great offense.  He started to sneeze and was cursed with the influenza.  It worsened for 2 days until he stumbled into a Kiesse village who thankfully had a sage.  After resting for 2 more days in that village, and frequent interventions by the sage on his behalf, Paimen was able to appease the local spirits and was healed.  He traded some of the foreigner's goods for some pots and a masterfully made handaxe in that village.  Rested, rejuvinated, and equipped, Paimen then headed east into the unexplored region of the Kaumo in search of furs.

So he packed up his gear, bundled in furs, loaded his 2 bulls, and set out once the lakes froze hard.  He was going to winter in the unexplored Kaumo and trap and hunt until the spirits were pacified.  After several days of slow skiing across the land, he was exhaused one morning after travel through the night.  So he wrapped himself in furs and slept well until he awoke refreshed late one night.  After only a short time traveling, he stumbled across a band of foreigners.  Normally, he had traded with these visitors in the past, but these new ones were strangers.  Even more, he had little to trade.  But, the foreigners were loaded with goods and seemed unaware of Paimen as he stumbled out of the forest near their camp. 

It was then that the guardian spirits showed Paimen that these foreigners were evil.  Paimen knew he had to remove them from the forest and take their goods for the good of the land.  Paimen knew he had no hope to fight these traders, but he could stalk them like filthy foreigners they were.  So with his bow and with his spear, Paimen stalked them through the trees and killed them one at a time...

Paimen Sartolainen couldn't ignore the spirits prompting anymore.  He had spent 2 summers mostly near his settlement hunting, minding his growing flock of sheep, farming his fields, and tending his snares, traps, and trap fences.  He certainly wasn't a warrior, but had become a master at hunting (stealth and bow) and a grandmaster working with hides.  So, when the spirits told him to seek furs at the Kaumo, he couldn't put off the impression anymore...

Suggestions / Removing old tracks

Can old tracks be intentionally removed or eliminated?  Maybe through the tracking skill?  I know they expire after a while.

I have numerous tracks of various beasts around my cabin, most of whom I've killed.  Those tracks layer over each other and make tracking a newer animal's trail very challenging.
