Re: Give some love to the Mustelids This is all great stuff! Mustelids do deserve more love :P and it would be nice to spot them more often (at least the "cheap" ones) and be able to recognise them by both behaviour (yay otters!) and sprite.

I think if you go ahead and make the sprites, @Sami might include them in the game. Otherwise, they'd make for a great little mod :)

More Tracking info So as I write this I'm hunting reindeer I think to my self where is the one I crippled? And it hits me, an tracker at a certain level should be able to see if his prey is crippled by it's gait and I should also be able to determine relative size small, big, from tracks these small changes would make it easier follow specific animal in a herd.

Re: Stuck on an island? If the robbers are on the same island it's possible (but definitely hard) to kill them one at a time and take their gear. The trick is to attack them during the night, throw rocks at them, and then disappear into the night, although a sufficiently large island may allow you to let them chase you to exhaustion before slowly pelting them with rocks. Anyone with a missile weapon is a serious threat, though, as all it takes is a lucky shot, so take extra care with those using missiles.

A tale of a robbed start
Spoiler: show

I had a character who started out robbed and dumped in the archipelago. The character started with no equipment, and so had to do with a stone axe and a stone knife on a small island (10 tiles?), with the start in "spring". As soon as the water was warm enough, as much time as possible was spent on swim training, allowing for excursions to nearby islands, and eventually a couple of kilometers could be covered, provided that the encumbrance was at most 1 (allowing for some clothes and a knife or a little food: a new [crummy] knife could be made fairly easily), and it was possible to bring some items from a nearby island (some food that didn't perish: good as a backup).
A very long swim led to a larger island than the starting one, with further islands within reach, and expeditions were made to those islands. Unfortunately, the water started to get cold on the way back from one of those, so the character turned back to the island just left (reasonably large), and started exploring it, to find that the original robbers were on that island! After killing a couple of them (see tactics above), a real axe was claimed, and luck allowed for an easy kill of an elk (i.e. food and cords), so a raft was quickly made. Using the raft, a shield recovered, maximum armor, and lying down on the raft to reduce the profile, it was possible to get the robbers to exhaust their arrows when out of physical reach, wait for them to run themselves into the ground, and then kill them with recovered arrows (with at least one surprise return of fire when one of the buggers claimed arrows from a downed colleague).

When all robbers were dead it was time for a trip to the original island to pick up some gear, and then to the mainland for a permanent settlement.

The character was eventually one-shot-killed by a bow wielding Njerp on an attempt to engage it from a large, but not sufficiently large, distance...

Re: Tufted duck? Tufted ducks have been checked out now, and indeed there was a tufted bug - or a little something to tweak regarding their commonness.
Even though tufted ducks could be found their commonness value was mistakenly initialized to minimum default and not to their species specific value. So, they were super rare.
It's fixed now and in the next patch tufted ducks will be more common.

Re: Can seals and beavers die underwater and be unrecoverable? I've change the colors of my arrows to be bright orange/reddish, and have applied the same to the javelins. That works fairly well for me.

Re: Wishlist The vast majority of crossbows from the middle ages have the bolt just laying on the stock when loaded.
Tilting the crossbow sideways while it's loaded could result in the bolt falling off.
Storing such a loaded crossbow on your back is unreasonable, the bolt would fall off.
Even carrying it with one hand in a relaxed manner with it pointed down would do the same.

Iron Age crossbows? Probably less sophisticated than the medieval ones you can find pictures of.

Crossbows should always require two hands when they are loaded.

Honi, Widow in the North ((AN: Hi, will be looking for a Beta. Able to send over Steam/Discord/Twitch. Please Message if wish to.)

Honi was maiden of the south, a Driiki lady through and through, maybe a little plumper than most due to her keeping her family stores and her habit of snacking on left over cuts when they failed to sell. She grew up with an keen eye for trading and values in her safe fortified village.

She never thought of leaving until she met her beloved; a handsome strong fur trader from the north. It was a whirlwind romance over a few winters when he came down to trade for nets and salt. He gifted her a superior Arctic fox winter fur and her father received fine Red Foe and Robber iron blades and bear furs; proving he could more than provide. When they spent the harsher winter nights curled around their fire, her beloved told them of his homestead he was building up north.

After another Harvest season of her holding her fox fur close waiting for the snows and with them her beloved to appear, did her father conceded that she was now 16 winters old and can head up north with her beloved as his wife. She hugged her father, knowing she wasn't likely to see him again for a year or so.

Her beloved followed the next snowfall. She told him of her father's words and soon they were packed unable to wait to start their life and family together. The first week was romantic but that soon ended, her skis making her ankles sore, the food cold and stale, the shelters cold and the dark forests terrifying. She tried to keep her complaints inside but occasionally they slipped out as they headed more north and she grew tired and sick of bland bread and meat. Her beloved was struggling to keep his own words gentle as he coached her on wards. She told herself it would be better when they get there.

It wasn't.

It was nothing like the bustling town she grew up with, it was silent apart from birds. The buildings was plain and lacking in trinkets and small things that made a house a home, the floors were still sticky from being new cut and soon a muddy mess. It felt like she spent more time scrubbing her floors than walking on them.

The worst was the dogs. The dogs she grew up with was quiet house pets, the ones her beloved kept was hunting and war dogs. Big mean beasts who stared her down like a deer. It was more of a semi feral pack her beloved kept in a pen behind the house. They were so loud! It seemed they were always barking with hunger. She was thankful when her beloved took them on his trips. It made her shiver when she had to tend to them.

Soon enough her duties were laid out; Keep the home. All day and night. Keep it warm and lit and well stocked with food and torches. To keep the dogs fed and watered. She did this quietly day after day as her husband came back from trips with carcasses and fish expecting her to prepare it. She missed her family, the busy trade route filled with strangers and friends with goods from all over the place.

One evening she woke up to barking. She nudged her beloved into waking. She heard the sounds of a fence being broken. She swore. The dogs had weakened a bit the day before but she left it. She had been waiting for her beloved to take the dogs out on a hunting trip and meant to fix it when the pen was empty. She grabbed a bit of meat by the smoker and a leash and headed out to see if she could tempt the dogs back in doors, knowing the cost of each one.

She soon couldn't see her hand in front of her face and was lost into the woods calling terrified for the dogs. She was almost in tears when she heard a small snuffling noise and one of the dogs came out from the dark. She recognised it to be Hari, a male dog who wasn't so big as the others. She managed to slip a leash onto him and fed him a cut.

She waited shivering holding onto the dog until day break. Thankfully the dog seemed to know the way home, tugging on the leash until they reached a familiar clearing... devastated.

Her home now fire and ashes and dead on the ground was her beloved. Tears fell quickly as she approached his body. She knew she had to get out, the bandits were probably still close. She quickly stripped his body and prepared a funeral pyre.

She dressed in his clothes quickly and held the leash tighter and left. There was nothing here for her now.

Re: Can seals and beavers die underwater and be unrecoverable? Kind of old, but I can confirm this works for beavers too who can bleed to death while diving and "float" back up.

Re: Clothing Protection (after 3.60 update)
"When was the last time..." Well, my characters tend to use disabled Njerps for target practice, and usually aim for the legs (to get them to last as long as possible, both because it's hard to hit and because hits tend not to be directly fatal), and there are a lot of arrows going through the feet in various fashions...

:o Wow, you don't just go after their lives - you're after their very Soles!  :D
