Suggestions / expansion on the planned animal husbandry
« on: November 04, 2017, 06:22:52 PM »
so, reading the planned features list i noticed "animal husbandry".

first up, i can hardly wait for it. the new types of gameplay that could come from this is already filling my mind with joy.

but one little thing could make it go way further. not only being able to buy an animal, but being able to sell it.

but why?

simple, if i can breed animals i could survive off those, trough slaughtering them and trading their meats/furs/leather. but if i could sell the living animals it would make breeding them an even more viable source of income, maybe even good enough to replace njerp slaying.
of course, breeding animals requires large amounts of food/farming, so it won't be easy or quick to set up an animal breeding center, but it would make it pay off in the end.

so to recap, can we also get the ability to sell live animals?

Suggestions / Re: More kinds of structures
« on: November 04, 2017, 06:15:39 PM »

- Primitive bridges   ->  yes please, a MUST. it's not that far fetched to use ropes/cords and boards to make a bridge. this would be AWESOME and realistic.
- Hill forts                -> i was thinking a "pallisade", walls do this but they look off.
- Burial grounds      -> being a bit creative allows you do already do this. still i like it.
- Giant's churches   -> churches? giant's? this one i dislike. we've got shamans and seers.
- Various forms of cairns   ->  oh yeah, that would be awesome to find.
- Ceremonial/sacrificial sites   -> same as above.
- Quarries, iron foundries       -> this might be overkill. perhaps one settlement with a new culture (the foreign traders outpost) could have a small blacksmith without being to unrealistic.

i like most ideas here, especially the bridge.

Gameplay questions / Re: Injured adventurer clarification
« on: November 04, 2017, 05:44:18 PM »
You may have to be persistent and patient to find the shelter.
Last time I did that quest, I found bloodscapes & tracks, and
the shelter was difficult to find, but it was there. The reward
was worth the effort.

same, except the only thing i found was the handaxe the adventurer wanted back and 2 wooden mugs....

anyway, found blood on the border, with bear tracks. followed those tracks, found the bear camping in the shelter. fucking squatters.

Gameplay questions / Re: Bow accuracy
« on: November 04, 2017, 05:36:35 PM »
I have 90 skill in bows, 0% encumberance, masterwork longbow, and fine arrows -- and I still miss birds more often than I hit at a range of one full screen.  English longbowmen could routinely hit something the size of a playing card from 200 yards.  I understand that these characters are hunter-trappers and fishermen, not professionally trained warriors,.

as someone who spends on average 1h bowpractice at about 40y (i think, i use metric, about 25m) for half a year (summer), i can confirm.

 but missing more than half your shots at a range of 30 or 40 yards seems realistically accurate.

a regular bow, nothing fancy. with regular arrows. wind and other variables. hitting a target a card size is rather hard. even at "only" 25m distance. but mabe that's just my poor eyesight.

Gameplay questions / Re: dog food. what do they eat?
« on: June 13, 2017, 11:33:10 PM »
I don't think they'll eat a whole carcass, except for fish (which are treated differently by the game). You have to butcher the animal, and then they'll eat the cuts of meat regardless of preparation (raw, cooked, dried, etc) or state (fresh, stale, spoiled).

It's only wild predators that won't eat cooked meat - dogs have no problem with it.

so i should not trow carcasses to my dogs.

does this count for the spoiled verions of cooked meat to? can i trow some dried meat at them, and expect them to eat it when it's rotten?

 Dogs won't eat "spoiled" cooked food. They will eat any condition "raw" meat.
They will eat unspoiled cooked meats.

so i can feed my dogs anything my own character would eat. as long as it's meat or fish. got it.

no more keeping meat apart for the dogs, they'll just get their daily ration just like me!

Gameplay questions / dog food. what do they eat?
« on: June 13, 2017, 08:21:27 PM »
like the topic says, but more specificly, if i skin a carcass (bird, hare, small things) and trow it in the dogpen just like that, will they eat it?

other then that, what sorts of food do they eat?

i know they eat raw and spoiled uncooked meat and fat.

Suggestions / Re: Regarding dog's behaviour in front of danger
« on: June 13, 2017, 02:07:17 AM »
I'm not sure what you're getting at. Dogs sometimes do flee when injured and sometimes fight to the death. They also ignore orders when enraged (as do companions). As to them following orders, well, just because the blasted dog barked a "yes" when I called it, it doesn't mean the bugger actually comes...

I've seen someone claiming different dogs have different personalities (brave/cowardly, energetic/lazy...).

i've seen different behaviors in my dogs. i got "jef" and "stavros"

stavros is very agressive, he fights hard and long and often gets wounded to.
jef is a bit more... cowardly is the wrong word here.. carefull! he'll run towards whatever i send it at but not actually fight it, he'll just "hang around" untill it can nip it's back!
so... i learned to FIRST release jef, he will get it's attention but not actually engage... then stavros who will go in full berserk style, wound and distract the prey and THEN jef will usually join in the actual fight.

i also found jef to return to me faster when the prey does get away, stavros will charge for longer (making me worry about his safety).

they both listen equally well tough, when i tell them to eat they heard that but when i tell them to get out of my cabin they are less likely to oblige (and i have had to remove them with a leach more then once). it's more of a pathfinding thing i guess but i find it hilarious. it gives em some realism :D

General Discussion / Re: Luckiest kill?
« on: June 13, 2017, 01:56:09 AM »
Broadheads do cutting damage that is more likely to cause a bleeding wound and they disable or kill faster. However, there are some disadvantages: a) may damage the hide more, especially with multiple hits; b) Not as good against armored people, because clothing & armor are usually more protective against cutting (edge) attacks than piercing (point) attack types.
I'll have to invest in some of those broad arrows on my current playthrough as too many times have animals been shot by my arrows but just kept running away and then I've lost them.

2 things.
tracking.
dogs.

General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?
« on: June 13, 2017, 01:49:17 AM »
i've just moved to the most norther part of the Mainland i can find. I come from the central part of the map near one of the mayor rivers leading to the coast. i moved there with all my precious loot and equipment as soon as the ice cleared up. i quickly built a small pasture and put my kota there, then proceeded in building a cabin. thanks to the masterwork tools and plenty of food supplies i already brought with me this was done in only 1 month, and i proceeded to raid the local coastline for ever more trees.

soon, the ice will form again, and i am already sitting on top of 300+ trees. they will be used to build a palisade wall around my soon to be farm.

in case things don't turn out so great, i have spare tools in my old house and i can get there relatively quickly, considering the distance. i've also got 2 reindeer, a cow, a sheep and 2 dogs to help me carry stuff.

-edit-

the ice has begun forming.. no more logs from the coast. time to sort out wich ones go where and fill up the remaining gaps with local wood!
Hopefully, before next summer, my homestead will be fully walled.

Gameplay questions / Re: Armor - Maximum Protection
« on: June 13, 2017, 01:37:02 AM »
I did some data analysis based on this discussion... Spoiler for min/maxing:
Spoiler: show

If I did my calculations correctly, this set of clothing gives excellent protection at only 59.29 weight:

Birch-bark shoes
Fur (bear) footwear
Fur (bear) mittens
Fur (stag/reindeer) hood
Fur (stag/reindeer) leggings
Fur (stag/reindeer) shirt
Iron Kneecops
Iron coudes
Iron spectacle helm
Leather leggings
Linen footrags
Linen tunic
Linen undergarment
Linen undershirt
Mail Cowl
Mail mittens
Nettle trousers
Nettle tunic
Woollen footrags
Woollen mittens
Woollen socks
Woollen tunic
Woollen undershirt
Woollen veil

value=3064

Protection value per slot:

blunt=15, 9, 11, 8, 8, 8, 13, 10, 8, 8, 8, 13, 13, 9, 12, 9
edge=23, 13, 13, 13, 15, 15, 19, 12, 13, 15, 15, 23, 23, 20, 20, 13
point=16, 8, 10, 8, 8, 8, 13, 8, 9, 8, 8, 14, 14, 12, 15, 10
tear=22, 14, 13, 13, 16, 16, 19, 14, 13, 16, 16, 25, 25, 21, 20, 15
squeeze=12, 6, 9, 6, 5, 5, 10, 7, 6, 5, 5, 9, 9, 6, 10, 7
warmth=13, 19, 7, 11, 25, 25, 17, 19, 10, 25, 25, 35, 35, 30, 15, 17

Squeeze protection is for some reason the hardest to find.  I calculated this by writing a program that ranked all armor by its relative protection value vs its weight, and then went through the list adding items to the outfit if we had less than 8 protection in any given slot covered by the item.  It went through the entire list without satisfying this requirement for Squeeze.  Then I took a pass at removing extraneous items if it would result in no blunt/edge/point protection going below 8.

In trying to assemble this outfit in game, I'm finding it especially difficult to source the more rare woollen items.  Right now my character has everything except:

Iron Kneecops
Iron coudes
Linen undergarment
Woollen footrags
Woollen mittens
Woollen socks
Woollen tunic
Woollen veil

I've so far managed to resist the urge to murder innocents for their woollen footrags.

why not use self sufficiency mod and make them?

i've got a full bear fur, full leather coverage (i'm not sure if it's all needed tough) and wool mittens+shoes (cuz cold). it gives full green protection on just about everything and you can make/repair most of it yourself. it has a bit of weight but i can sleep outside in all but the coldest nights without the need for fire. add ski's to it and you can actually outrun/ski most humans, great for wearing down a njerp.
in summer i'll go for full metal + linen, it weighs less but gives hardly any cold protection.
the state of your outfit matters a great deal tough, keep your outfit repaired at all times!

Gameplay questions / Re: Keeping the game fresh
« on: June 13, 2017, 01:30:10 AM »
I always try to play a likeness of myself, and then basically roleplay as myself.  Basically, would you do something in the game that you wouldn't do in real life?

Basically...

- Are you really a god of combat, stealth, and a master hide-worker?  Specifically?
- Would you deliberately hunt down and kill somebody to take their stuff?
- For that matter, would you really seek out warriors from another culture to fight?
- Would you really gather a whole bunch of people from different villages, arm them with weapons and armor, and go destroy other camps?
- Would you really subsist on a mono-diet knowing how bad for you health that is in real life?  Like mono-dried meat or mono fish, or mono milk?
- For that matter, what kind of allergies do you have in the real world?
- Would you really feed your dogs spoilt meat?  Or try and sell that to others (not sure if you can still do this or not.)
- Would you really build a cabin, by yourself?  Would you really cut down 300 tree's, put them all on a raft secured only with small pieces of cloth you cut from your underwear, and paddle upstream, to a building site so close to the river that it could potentially be flooded?
- Would you really build a trap-fence 10 km long?
- Would you really work your character so hard that they are constantly on the verge of fainting?
- Use the "Oath of Iron" ritual on throwaway weapons?
- Ect, ect.  You get the point.

Basically there's a ton of things you end up doing in the game because they are incredibly favorable or they take out some of the tedium, but they totally wreck the intended balance of the game.  Now, of course, being to strict with those ideas can also lead to a boring or frustrating game, so you should have some leeway if you choose to re-imagine yourself.  Perhaps you from 1,000 years ago would be very talented in something.  You would have to be, or you wouldn't last very long.
Very well said  :)

- no, neither is my char. i enter combat only when i already know i'll win.
- i dont even do that in the game...
- no, but if they come to close to something i need to survive i will stop them, if i can. irl and ingame
- if i was in a situation like in urw, no police and 6 tribes being harrased by 1 other tribe, AND i can get people to actually follow me, i'd gather an army of volunteers from all over and wage a terrible war against those njerps. i'd prefer to deal with it quickly then have to suffer them constantly raiding everywhere. in real life this would have already happend.
- i dont do that ingame or irl, i might actually do it more irl then ingame.
- nothing serious
- if they would eat it, yes. if it's harmless i would. other then that i only do it ingame because they prefer it over cooked food!
- if i had to, yes. i also built a wall around my little farm (that actually DOES take 300 trees) over a course of a year. on average less then 1 tree/day. i can do that.
- given enough time, the need for it and if it was legal, i might consider it. ingame i dont, it's "to easy"
- i dont do that ingame, it's to dangerous. other then that i have terrible insomnia so i basicly treat my char like i treat myself. i do shit till i drop.
- if i believed it worked i would to it on ANY weapon that i plan to actually use. ingame i dont use it at all (i forget...)
- etc etc, you can perfectly live ingame in a way you would irl, and yes there are things you can exploit that wont ever be true irl but most of the things you mentioned are not that strange at all.

and you didnt had to be all that talented back then, you just needed a good community -OR- be very talented. that's the whole reason people live in villages/communities, because people tend to specialize.
