Mod Releases / Re: URW sufficiency mod
« on: February 15, 2018, 04:27:37 PM »
caethan - been using this mod for a while now, and it's very good!  ironworking seems to have been well-tweaked compared to some iterations i've seen, for example: i like the use of tongs.  making charcoals and such seems a bit easier now.  all good.

one suggestion, i've noticed that the "tailoring" menu has far, far too many options for all of them to appear at once.  would it be possible to split this into several menus?  For example, "tailoring pants & shoes" vs "tailoring shirts & gloves".  or it could be separated by type of cloth.  thanks for a great mod!

Suggestions / make dogs stop barking at birds
« on: February 15, 2018, 04:20:22 PM »
i understand that hawks and owls are predators, but it's irritating when a goshawk moves into your area and now your dog is constantly bothering you and interrupting your tasks.  my suggestion is, just modify the dogs' behavior so that they ignore birds of prey.  I can't really think of the situation where this behavior would be desirable.

General Discussion / Re: Inconsistencies/problems with rope.

i find the lack of cordage in the base game odd as well.  maybe it's a finnish thing, but here in the US one of the first things we learn at bushcraft or survival schools is how to make basic cordage from grass, bark, etc.  I usually play with mods for that reason.  Caethan's self sufficiency mod is what i'm currently using and it works well,  buiodda's mod is also excellent.

Gameplay questions / Re: Best Trap Fence Setup?
« on: February 08, 2018, 05:31:46 AM »
Well, I'd say the right size just depends on how much game you feel like managing.  2 major kills in the frame of one month is a high ratio, and it sounds like your set up is good if that's how much meat and hide you feel like processing.  hard to say how long it will stay at those yields, i'm not really sure how the migration patterns in the game are modeled, but it seems like it's definitely working :D

i know one strategy ive had good luck with is, encircling a small lake.  animals come to drink and get caught in the traps.  you could consider expanding your fences part-way around the water if you want more game, but it sounds like maybe you already have enough.  Careful not to kill more than the forest can handle!  or the spirits may not look favorably upon you...

Guides and tutorials / Re: Choose the starting Culture based on skills
« on: February 05, 2018, 08:16:34 PM »

Sure, but every Owl knows to bring a reindeer or two with him when out hunting, and make temporary shelters where to leave it :)

I actually either directly leave the meat to dry where the elk died (so many bogs in the north, no lack of water to make a temporary shelter to process the skin and dry the meat), or even just push it on a tree for later collection.

That, at least for me, is one of the big challenges in playing a pure hunter -- thinking like a nomad. There's absolutely no reason to not go far afield with a reindeer carrying cords and supplies, set up a shelter, a kota frame for drying, and process meat on the spot. Except for remembering to go back and get the dried meat. For some reason, I always get caught in the trap of "gotta get home... gotta get this home... then everything will be good". Sometimes I think the game needs a good built-in scheduling app to remind when things are done drying, when nets should be grabbed, etc. But yes, thinking like a nomad is the challenge and the true pleasure in that kind of character.
this is very true and yes, i struggle with this as well.

i think part of the reason may be that the introductory game course is designed for a sedentary, "safe" lifestyle of a farmer/fisher/trapper/homesteader.  many of the challenges include building homes, planting crops, etc.  not ideal or even logical for a nomad.  the "advanced adventures" game course, however, involves a lot of travel and may actually be easier for a nomad.  so maybe homesteader vs nomad could be partially understood as "beginner vs advanced".  personally, i've never gotten a nomad character off the ground but have always been curious.  i suspect Seal tribe may be best for a pure hunter, and Kuikka for a fisher nomad.  Owl or Kaumo would also be good.

I must say, I have played as Islander several times and I think they are actually much better than people give them credit for, SO LONG AS you live in their native environment, the southwestern archipelago.  The archipelago is mostly quite safe and devoid of dangerous animals and enemies, except for some of the larger islands (which are easily avoided).  This means that weak combat skills are mostly unimportant.    Excellent fishing skills provide all the seafood anyone could ever need, negating the need for trapping or hunting.  And the weather in the islands is relatively balmy, even in winter, providing a carefree and easygoing lifestyle.  really, the only challenge is finding a way to pass the time - which is why I prefer to play Islander characters with mods like Buoidda's installed.  Their boost to carpentry makes them very viable as blacksmiths, weavers, etc.  I've had two very successful Islander characters who lived the life of a peaceful craftsman, covering their islands with gardens and dwelling in a compound at the center where they have full-fledged production facilities for ironmongering, clothesmaking, brewing, cheesemaking, etc.  Then, when the time is right, they set off in a boat across the sea - to trade their wares at the island towns, or head to the Driik coast and up the rivers to the rich towns where all manner of goods may be found.

On the other hand, I have no idea why anyone would want to play as Koivula.  Seems like a "challenge culture".  Driik are also interesting but I've never had much desire to play one.  Seems like you would have to actively hunt with the crossbow, traveling from town to town looking for a chance to use your sword.  Could be fun but I've never had the heart to try.

Bug reports / Re: Impossible (?) herb gathering quest?
« on: February 05, 2018, 03:39:20 PM »
I agree!  If the quest-giver needs the herb, he should take the time to teach the player-character what it looks like.  On a somewhat-related note, it would also be nice to be able to ask villagers about nearby plants - "Excuse me, old fellow, but what is that flower growing there?"  "Why, that's a burdock, my son.  We grow it to help with wounds"

Gameplay questions / Re: How do I catch perches?
« on: February 05, 2018, 03:36:28 PM »
i believe perch and roach are primarily shallow-water fish, where nets cannot be cast.  it's even possible that they are too small to be caught with nets, not sure what sort of nets are being modeled in the game.  i know that in real life, perch are very popular fish for anglers.  they like to dwell in weeds.  my characters in the game often tend to subsist largely on perch, with roach and pike mixed in.

fun fact - the perch is national fish of Finland!

Suggestions / Re: Reduce the difficulty of climbing trees
« on: February 01, 2018, 11:51:30 PM »
i agree, it seems ludicrously dangerous.  in real life, i think people are more likely to get stuck and be forced to climb back down, rather than foolishly step on a branch which cannot support them or some such

yes, this has happened to me a few times as well.  not sure if it's a bug or if it's intentional that you may need a stockpile to complete the quest.

blew me away the first time too.  the designers of this game really mind their P's and Q's.  ....and... dot their eyes?  sorry...

General Discussion / Re: Having a hard time finding animals.
« on: January 14, 2018, 09:49:41 PM »
Personally, I prefer the thrill of active hunting ;)

you need good perception attributes in order to find the wildlife in their natural habitat.  I find good eyesight to be the most important, as it allows you to see a long way on the map, spot animals moving through the wilderness, and also helps with missile weapons.  it also really helps to have decent tracking skill - if you don't feel like investing in this skill at character creation, you can do the beginner adventure path to get a big boost.

as others mentioned, your best bet is to find a good vantage point.  Hills and mountains work the best, marshes are also pretty good, and rivers and lakes can work too.  Simply scout around and look for animals. If you see some, make a note of their last-seen location and head  there.  They may have moved or disappeared by the time you get there, so this is where your tracking skill comes in handy.  use it on the world map by pressing ctrl-t, and it will often give you an indication of where the animal headed.  When you think you're getting close, you can try zooming in to follow their tracks more closely.

Of course, there may simply not be any animals where you are.  If that's the case, you can wait around for a while and more animals will likely eventually migrate there.  However, this option takes a long time and isn't viable if you rely on hunting for sustenance.  Your best bet is to stay on the move.  You're far more likely to find animals if you travel, always on the lookout for good vantage points to scout for game.  You also have to keep in mind the habitats of the animals - you aren't likely to find much in the frozen northern mountains during the winter.  Game is most plentiful in the south-east region of the world, near the Kaumo and Reemi - but you must also watch out for the dreaded Njerpez in that region.

Good luck, young hunter!  Do not forget to thank the forest spirits when you harvest the animals ;)

of course, the Beginner unreal world mission tree also rewards you with a handaxe fairly early ;)

Suggestions / Re: Way to increase stats
« on: January 04, 2018, 03:30:44 PM »
It's been mentioned before that it would be nice for physical stats to increase based on in-game activities.  For example, chopping down trees all summer would surely increase your strength (try it if you don't believe me...), or skiing all winter could increase your endurance.  Like you said, the characters are only 16 years old, and people's bodies are very adaptable at that age.  It would also be nice to see more "cosmetic" changes, like if you stay indoors all winter eating bear meat, you might put on a few extra pounds ;)
