Bug reports / Re: Creation of Mass From Nothing
« on: December 14, 2022, 08:20:11 PM »
In the same area, yarn is much heavier than the fibres that go into making it! :)

I believe there are zero plants where the yield weigh would match the complete plant perfectly - or sometimes not even reasonably. :)
At least they haven't been never thoroughly checked.

Suggestions / Re: "Liking" posts in the Modding Forum
« on: December 13, 2022, 06:52:40 PM »
Is there a reason we can't give "Likes" to posts in the Modding Forum?  It would be nice to give the hard-working modders some encouragement sometimes!

It's allowed now, and also at few other boards that were missing the option. So let there be likes everywhere.
There was no specific reason for not having like-option at some boards. It was just that these boards were created after installing the like system and in that case the like-option wasn't enabled there by default.

Suggestions / Re: Rebalance fishing with nets in winter
« on: December 12, 2022, 09:34:49 AM »
The fish die from having stuck in place in the nets. They need to move to breath through the gills.
It's true in the warm summer waters some fish may die very surprisingly quick. Even in a matter of hours.
And then the spoilage starts fast too,
The cold waters may improve their lifespan to some extent, but I don't think it's that drastic.

From the local fishermen I've heard they check their wintertime nets twice a week, and still sometimes they find some fish dead. However, in the cold winter waters the spoilage doesn't go as fast as in the warm summer waters. And that could be tuned, with a day or two, but not with a week or so.

Something to consider, although we have a quite good all-year round average in use currently.

(For the realism sake the warm summer waters spoilage should be made faster too, but no-one is really suggesting that :) )

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: Two bugs with Textilecrafting
« on: December 11, 2022, 12:43:05 PM »
Another issues :
Extracting Fiber from already extracted fibers takes 15 bundles and gives out 1 bundle.
(Noticed with misclick/fat fingers)
Should only allow fiber extraction from “dried & retted”

This is also fixed now. It was also about nettles only.

The first one: You can skip drying plants entirely. Take the retted plants and beat them into fibre, possibly slightly wet ones. :P]

This one is now fixed. It bothered only the nettles.

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: 3.72beta - minor typo bug
« on: December 11, 2022, 12:29:44 PM »
This was a real math bug after all, not just a typo.
The fibre plant amount calculation was failing, but the text message referred to correct amount - which can vary depending on the plant.

It's fixed now, and the mininum amount of plants to get "practical amount" ie. one bundle of fibre goes as follows:
5 flaxes
8 hemps
15 nettles

Fixed - persists in 3.72beta, and likely in earlier versions too..

Not bugs / Re: Clothing quality cap?
« on: December 11, 2022, 12:06:37 PM »
Your observations are right, clothes always come out as decent quality. No higher, and no lower also.
This is because there's no proper clothmaking skill (yet) and the production times are (still) all too quick.
When we get to featuring pausable crafting ie. in clothmaking, so that we can adjust the production times to match the reality, we can also start putting cloth production quality in use.

So there's this hardcoded cap, and it's working as intended.

Fixed now.

Persists in 3.72beta, 3.71 - and maybe even in some earlier versions too.

Bug reports / Re: Creation of Mass From Nothing

Yeah. There's always been mismatch with plant yield versus plant weight.
It's due to fixed default plant weights which is indeed confusing.
Well, it's also definitely something to adjust - when the priorities are suited for that.

This seems to trouble all the flowering and seed producing plants. Some checks are failing globally in plant's seed production code.
Let's work it out...

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: 3.72beta Annoying clicking sound
« on: December 01, 2022, 03:19:14 PM »
This has to have to do something how the background ambience sample is being played. There's no completely silence, but a soft humming ambience constantly in the background.
It's "ambience.ogg" sample in audio/ folder, if you want to check it out.

As the issue changed with Tinker updating library files is refers to problems in playing that sample in SDL or SDL_mixer libraries.

weakend2k13's sample has got a quite disturbing crack, which I can't explain in any way. It's cycle doesn't meet eg. the duration of the ambience sample.

What both of you could try though, would be to simply delete ambience.ogg from audio/ folder and see if it makes a difference.
The game will notify of ambience.ogg loading problem upon start, press a key and it continues.

In any case, there are no code changes to audio handling from our behalf, so this points to system/SDL2/SDL_mixer oddities.
And as the reports of it are this little it's also likely a very rare oddity, which is difficult to exactly pinpoint or remedy.

Every now and then the many unique elements of UnReal World do arise academic interest.
Folklore, mythology, historical ambition, recreation of traditions, long history or the mere depth of it all.
Now we're highlighting a fresh book in Finnish and shortly upcoming conference in Paris for you to have a closer look at will. Both can be witnessed also online.

The Finnish connection ...

Back in 2019 mr. Kyyrö, PhD from University of Turku School of History, Culture and Arts Studies first interviewed me, and then Erkka separately, for his studies and projects regarding computer games and religion.
There's a forum post (with a picture) about it here.

Now mr. Kyyrö has written a chapter about UnReal World and its approach and relation to the field of new spiritualities in recently published compilation work titled "Uushenkisyys" (in Finnish).
The title of the book translates as "New spiritualities" in english, and quoting the english abstract:
"The book shows the multiple ways in which new spiritualities intertwine with different sectors of the society and blur spirituality’s boundary with religion, health care, art, and popular culture, for example. The book is the first book-length presentation in Finnish of the field of new spiritualities."

In his research mr. Kyyrö analyzes both the game and the interviews of me and Erkka. The chapter is titled "Dare to hear your voice, dare to follow your spirit" - which is a line you may have spotted from the game end screen. For me, quoting this very line means a lot. I don't exactly remember if it appeared into the game 20, or even 25 years ago - but it's been there for a long time and the underlying attitude behind it still stands strong even though it was first made up by a far less experienced coder and a human being.
The book is freely available online, in finnish. So take a look, you finnish speaking players.

The French connection...

Earlier this month I had a pleasure of receiving contact and talking online with monsieur Efrati, a doctorate student at EHESS (School of Advanced Studies in the Social Sciences) in France, where he works on the representations of Prehistory in video games. We had a great and interesting talks which may lead into further research or co-operation, but he already gathered some UnReal Worldish background material to be utilized at the following event.

Tomorrow,  28th of november,  he's organizing a conference at the French national library dedicated to a 1986 survival/proto-open-world game called Sapiens. The subject may be interesting to many of you on its own, but now also the UnReal World is going to be mentioned in the context as well. To what extent, I don't really know, so you have to witness it by yourself. Luckily the conference can be watched online too: Monday, 28th of nov., 18:00 - 20:00.

Unfortunately, it will be in French only but our french speaking player base is not a small at all - so go check it out.
Here's the conference web page, and at the bottom you'll find  a link to watch it live (and afterwards) on YouTube.

Version 3.72 beta is now available for all the supported operating systems now - Windows, Linux and OS X.
OS X build was the last in line and considering the stability of earlier released Windows and Linux betas there's no need to hesitate of getting into 3.72beta.
Version 3.72 (beta) is available at Steam, Itch.Io and for lifetimers.

With no showstoppers having been noticed we're adding up a few more features and then wrap things up for a stable release -
which is destined to be released still this year.

Not bugs / Re: [3.72beta Windows 10] Fireplace not working for sauna
« on: November 22, 2022, 09:14:15 AM »
Reworded the sauna game course task info a bit, should be all clear now.
And if anyone is struggling with their old homestead fireplaces not working as saunas the solution is as Bert Preast first mentioned:
Quote
Solution:  Dismantle fireplace then build sauna stove.
See, player character can build sauna stoves.

Sauna task info reworded - persists in 3.72beta.

Solved'n'fixed bug reports / Re: 3.72beta Annoying clicking sound
« on: November 21, 2022, 11:42:52 AM »
This leaves me a bit puzzled as there are no changes to sound thingies in 3.72beta.
There are new SDL libraries, though, but

Does it happen in any particular situation...when the character is moving etc.?
Does it keep sounding if you leave the character idle and do nothing? Hands of the keyboard and just let the game main screen be there.
Can you record this for us to hear?
