Gameplay questions / Re: Can i buy healing herbs and seeds somewhere?
« on: December 17, 2018, 04:28:22 PM »
Well, the village sages themselves offer free healing. The idea of seeds for sale, though, seems logical. Surely the villages that plant these drops would have seeds available.

Gameplay questions / Bear's teeth?
« on: December 14, 2018, 07:56:24 PM »
Before the last patch, I had a character with a spell that called for bear's teeth. I've never had teeth to result from a bear kill. Does that still exist in the game and, if so, how does one acquire bear's teeth?

Gameplay questions / A blistering work week...heh
« on: December 12, 2018, 12:00:49 PM »
I had begun to have concerns about my various trap placements and my two trap fences.  I've been checking every day or so and my results were pretty poor for a long time (6-8 weeks?) and only a couple of bears and two elk.

Then, voila!, it's a reindeer, an elk, an elk, an elk and a fox, and another elk. There may be another elk in there that I lost track of. Mixed in with these were at least 6 birds and it's all within a 2-3 week period. Every time I'd complete a hide and finish drying the meat, I'd find another big game in a trap. I got so frazzled that, on the last elk, I was too exhausted to skin it at the trap so I packed the whole thing on my bull and carried the carcass home and stuffed it in the cellar. Unfortunately, that upset my usual routine and the first thing I did in the morning was to BUTCHER it! Bah! I lost the skin!

Not to mention that I had over 50 cords when this period began, which had seemed more than enough up to that point.  I quickly burned through all of those and eventually, after exhausting all my Njerp scrap clothing, I had to use a 24 lb elk hide for cords, of which there are only about 6 lbs left.

Finally, I've had a day when there WAS NOT something in my traps, lol, so I can take a breather. I may have used up my good luck when I lost that last elk skin. Meh.

Addendum: I spoke too soon. I'm wearily making some cords to replenish my stock when I hear a "bawl of pain in the southeast". Yup, another elk...lol. I now have 152 reindeer cuts and 1758 elk cuts being prepared! At least I didn't forget to skin the bugger this time.

Addendum: Remarkably, yet another elk, though it seems this run of luck is finally ended. Oh, and I apologize for not putting this in the Game Discussion area. My error!

Gameplay questions / Re: About working hides...
« on: December 12, 2018, 11:41:10 AM »
Palu- Thanks for the input. The info about harmed skins was something I never thought about. I'll start paying more attention to hide condition, just to try to get a more accurate gauge of what my skills make possible and what's already stacked against me. heh

I've wondered if the hide value stays the same as when you began a step when fatigue mounts greatly. For instance, the final step of beating it into pliability? Large elk and bear hides typically take me about eight hours straight to soften it and I'm always beyond 100% fatigue. Does my chance for maintaining hide quality get reduced by my growing fatigue?

When butchering, does knife quality affect the number of cuts? Today, with a Masterwork Knife, I hit my highest yet, 369 elk cuts.

Anyway, thanks for your replies to my many queries. I see that you do the same on the Steam forums, too, for others. Are you just a player or are you a mod? You always seem to be around...hehe.

Gameplay questions / About working hides...
« on: December 12, 2018, 01:44:05 AM »
I guess I'm hoping someone has the perfect method of tanning hides. I'm at 82% in hide-working and every time I clean a Superior skin I cross my fingers. I've actually given up trying to tan them, resorting to curing them until I can improve my craft.

So, my first question is, how do you set your guy up to work skins? I get a fire going in the fireplace and strip off armor, weapons, etc, to lower my burden, and try to never work unless fresh and vigorous. That's my rule for simply CLEANING a superior hide!  Someone said that it doesn't matter whether you're tired or not, just the amount of burden you're bearing. Can that be confirmed? Is there a best way?

Questions on mechanics- Why will my guy reach out to an adjacent square for a tool but not for a water bag or tub? Hefting a 21lb bag of water adds to burden!
If I pass out while felling a tree, it's partially felled. Is the same true if I fall out while working a hide?
Does putting my uncleaned hides in a cellar slow their deterioration? I do this when I'm already weary, etc, to avoid ruining the hide. But, is that actually
built into the game? Likewise with the meat from kills. Is waiting in a cellar to dry/smoke them a viable plan? How long will it keep meat fresh, if so?
Are any of the four steps immune to degrading a hide as you work it? I mean, is there a step in which I can't possibly screw it up, like soaking a skin to
                                      cure it?

For the record, I had a superior cured bird skin that I tried to proceed with, as a test. The very next step degraded that one, at 82%. I'm not ready yet!

Gameplay questions / Re: Can't make skis with reindeer leather?
« on: December 08, 2018, 01:03:28 AM »
Oh, bother! You would not believe the trouble I caused myself getting leather made for this guy, for those skis. I'd lose track of time during the long soaking periods and ruin the skins. I guess I got confused when it said 'hide', rather than 'fur'. The odd thing is that I made skis before. It's just been so long since then that I forgot.

As for the ski sticks, I used a lot of those pretty useless bird skins

Gameplay questions / Can't make skis with reindeer leather?
« on: December 07, 2018, 02:21:13 PM »
Winter's coming and I thought I had prepared myself with leather for skis but it tells me that Forest Reindeer leather does not count as animal hide for that purpose. Is this supposed to be the case? Which also brings to mind the question- Why does no NPC ever have leather for trading? People in villages have leather items but no one ever seems to make leather.

Suggestions / Re: Craftable punts ? And what should the limitations be ?
« on: December 01, 2018, 10:01:55 PM »
After getting an in-game close-up, it seems clear that it's a dugout. And Palu reminds me of the quest requiring a trunk cut down in the rain.

On reflection, it's puzzling that a raft made up of 3 500lb tree trunks winds up so comparatively light! heh

« on: December 01, 2018, 12:46:35 AM »
Perhaps it's an assumption on my part but I thought a punt was like a coracle, possibly made with skins?

If it's a dugout type, that would require controlled burns for days and a tool like an adze for working the inner hull down. I suppose it could be some type of bark-hulled boat, like a canoe?

Bug reports / Re: Target confusion
« on: November 30, 2018, 07:42:11 PM »
Worst is when your target is north of a tree and you can't actually see him because the view is blocked by the tree. I've actually killed one of my dogs in that scenario. The Njerp was prone and the dog apparently was on top of him.

Since then, When the bad guy is down I try to corral my dogs and tie them to a tree before I go in to finish it.

Another time I used the arrow function to target and chose the wrong arrow key. I absolutely floored my leashed bull!

I don't really think this is a bug. Seems more like confusion in battle.

General Discussion / Re: What's Going On In Your Unreal World?
« on: November 28, 2018, 10:57:28 PM »
Having buggered my first guy that lasted through a few winters (Thank you, Father Winter, farewell, Wotan), I've got a new guy!

Acquired the flu in week one. Fortunately, I rushed to a village sage and the damage cleared soon. I, a Kaumo, apparently had a father (Unfortunate Hunting Trip) who was a Drik, so the crossbow I salvaged from his body is, of course, useless to me...lol. But, it did trade well for a Fine Longbow and a few other items! Now, I ask myself, why am I armed with a sakramaski knife? Maybe my mother was from the Seal tribe...heh.

I got a Wounded guy quest (gave him his daddy's axe, which I didn't have at the time...yeah), found the bear and backtracked it to the campsite. Set a heavy deadfall with a spoiled roach and bagged the nasty bear the next day! Woohoo! Fine bear skin! I've bagged two more bears, an elk and two reindeer pretty quickly, mostly in time to dry the meat (Springtime start).

Own two dogs and have just entered the wet season. I'm presently nursing a 30% damage broadhead arrow to the abdomen. I'm sure it's a good omen...hehe

General Discussion / Re: ##urw IRC Chatroom
« on: November 28, 2018, 10:39:19 PM »
Hello folks,

It is Sunday 22th of April, half past six (Finnish Time; UTC+3) and I'm online at the irc channel. Come to chat if you happen to feel like that. I have an idle evening with nothing special to do, so I might well hang around the irc channel until 22:00 UTC+3 or so.

Shucks! I think I was tanning a ragged badger hide at the time. Note to self: Two arrows is two too many...

General Discussion / Re: Well...shiite!
« on: November 28, 2018, 10:25:16 PM »
Being rather new to the game, I've noticed that I often forget to pay attention to the messages or meters, as there is no "tangible" feedback - nothing's been fatal so far, but I often walk or work till I drop from exhaustion because I'm focused on what the character is doing on the screen and don't pay attention to the right side of the screen (especially when there's line after line of messages of my dog barking in hunger or the bull bellowing). If the character started staggering, or the screen dimmed when you're getting too tired, it would be a more prominent cue. Or in the case of forgetting to wear clothes in the middle of winter, a blue tint over the screen as you start feeling the cold...

those are all excellent recommendations! lol... How many times have I repeatedly ignored my dogs barking at a passing bird while I try to eat a bite of dried elk?

There should be
Code: [Select]
You are shivering all over from the cold and feel confused.
Code: [Select]
You've become drowsy and confused from the cold and can barely remain conscious! If not, can you post your msglog.txt? (in ANCESTORS folder)

Oh, yeah, it's there.

(CC3333):kcie:[&]{0239062C}      | You've become drowsy and confused from the cold and can barely remain conscious!
(3C5A98):kcie:[:]{023C0632}      | You feel a minor frostbite in your neck.
(663333):kcie:[&]{023C0632}      | You feel warm for a moment, then lose your consciousness...
(A80000):kcie:[!]{023C0632}      | You have died...

There were a number of such warnings, in fact. However, if I were trying to light a fire, skin a hide, etc, I would receive a pause with the message. Because I was watching for robbers on the map, I failed to regard the warnings. It's my fault, no doubt of that. But, if there'd been a pause with the messages while I was walking, that guy would still be enjoying his winter wonderland...heh.
